PS2's is great too.
As for current consoles, Switch's is extremely boring, but at least isn't cluttered with crap. It's way too barebones though, could use more features.

The PS4 didn't need to. Sony was just taking pointers from Microsofts Metro Design language because it was efficient at seamlessly showing shit like ads on-screen

XMB for easy utility in systems that don't simply start up with a game in them, Gamecube and PS2 for older ones that had effort in for it despite being something one probably wouldn't spend much time on short of editing memory cards.

Microsoft was full jew with the xbox even then (gotta pull out a cheap capacitor they used or it will leak and fuck the console on earlier models, on later models they put epoxy and shit everywhere to make hardmodding harder, and upgrading/replacing the hardware takes some dicking around) but it sure had a god tier aesthetic. It's kind of a pain to load the stock firmware again after softmodding it, but it's worth it to take a look every now and then.

The Wii interface was like every modern smartphone interface, but it came out before even the first iPhone. Channels were just apps, you had apps for playing off the disc, for reading news, getting the weather forecast, browsing photos, and individual apps for downloaded games. You could move apps around, delete and re-install them.
It was way ahead of its time. If only they could have gotten rid of all the warning screens and if the console could be set up to boot into the game by default, it would have been perfect.

Softmod I used makes it super easy to boot to the original menu, I think I even set it up to do so when I hit eject instead of power. I just think you have to set it up while softmodding or it will be a pain.

The menu was cool, but a mess to get through. Can't expect much better from the early nineties, though, because at the time, even the Windows UI was still kinda' new. In before macfag kvetching. Speaking of Saturn emulation, MESS' driver for that system performs rather well on my toaster APU (A6-5400k, usually at almost full speed) but VDP2 glitches are very common and it segfaults a lot.

Unlike PS2, memory management was a breeze on Saturn since it didn't lock down while scrolling (which PS2 does in order to load 3d icons for save games; Saturn just lists filenames found in internal or external RAM.)

3DS home menu with homebrew. Having all your downloaded games displayed in nice neat tiles with no bullshit is nice. The folders are great for organizing things like virtual console games, or whatever else you might have, and the touchscreen is a perfect compliment for management. Also, knowing how to make 3DS themes certainly doesnt hurt either. Custom music and SFX are great. Pic related, but not mine. Also not necessarily homebrew, but it gets the point across

You didn't really have to do much digging to get to something you wanted. Everything was a flick away and it felt good to thumb through the menu. Also it looked unique and cool. XMB made everything look like images floating in a featureless void.
But mostly I just miss it because my blades had cute Puzzle Fighter HD girls and I used to be able to just enjoy all the artwork by flicking through the blades. When the XMB came out I never had any reason to go into the system tab so I never saw Morrigan. Fuck the XMB, seriously.

Of course, nobody mentions that it was horribly tempermental and would freeze up for ten, fifteen seconds at a time regularly leaving you stranded.
Aesthetically it was as close to perfect as anything and still better than the replacement.
