Note: the fact that I list the game here does not necessarily always mean that I think the game is very good or that there isn't a better alternative/better sequel. This is more about essentiality in forming a more-or-less all-around picutre of what video games entail and are capable of. Sometimes games are included for historical reasons or reasons of popularity. Some of those I don't even like (but I mostly do). All in my subjective opinion, of course.

I've never really seen a game come close mechanically. Not even the dark mod. It really depends on what you're after. Thief has a steep learning curve. A lot of stealth games give you 3rd person so you can see everything, but Thief is first person so you have to use sound (which is good because the sound design is some of the best in gaming) and your tools. On top of that the surface you walk on really, I mean REALLY, effects how loud you move.

You also need to rebind your controls, because the default ones are really shit. Also it really depends on which one you play. They're both mechanically the same but the level design varies hard. Most people prefer 2.

This game will throw you off. It's very experimental and rough around the edges but it grows on you. It has higher highs but lower… lower lows than Thief 2. It has a ton of diversity between its levels and it's closer to playing a Thief in a very old school adventure game. One day you'll be sneaking around a mansion, the next you'll be raiding a tomb or walled off section of the city full of zombies. A lot of people get filtered out when they play the zombie levels thinking that's the entire game. Still though, it has the best crypt in games I've ever seen.

>Thief 2:

This game is probably more of what you'd expect. They basically cut out all the fantasy style levels and it's pure stealth. A lot of people prefer this, but I don't know. Nothing stuck with me as hard as Down in the Bonehoard. You'll see a lot of people say this ones better. The monsters have been replaced with robots that you kinda are forced to sneak around, but you can destroy them by shooting water into one of their weak points on their back.

For what purpose? Personally I loved the online despite it being a laggy mess, but it's mostly dead now so suggesting that is kinda lame. I'm forced to assume you mean the campaign, but I really don't know why. It's basically "What if Starship Troopers happened on Earth and we made the aliens an underground monarchy". Not the best premise. Gameplay is average with the exception being the weapons. Chainsaw and Hammer of Dawn were great fun.

I'll nominate Dead Rising. One of my absolute favourites of all time. A lot of people don't like it but I feel there is very little that can be changed without harming the overall experience. The AI is notoriously bad, but if it were to be improved then the survivors are too capable and its not the same. The time limit prevents you from doing everything in one run with no repercussion or planning.

This is why I say Higher highs, lower lows. Even then you really don't appreciate just how good some of the levels, like Down in the Bonehoard, are until you've replayed them a few times and get them down. The Thieves Guild, Abandoned section of the City, Escape, etc are always aids though.

I second Dead Rising 1. The way I dealt with survivor AI was spamming the "Go here" thing until they where out of danger. They seemed to mindlessly follow it.

Master of Magic still has never been surpassed in the 4x genre.
