My problem with Fallout 4's world (and Skyrim also did this to some extent) is that the individual locations may be cool but the world as a whole makes no sense. What are the super mutants doing living door to door with a pack of hungry feral ghouls? How do people travel when the roads between the main settlements are overrun with deathclaws? Roads should be the safest routes, yet Bethesda treats them like some kind of dungeon-filled rollercoaster, some kind of tourist route to see all the important landmarks. If you go off the road to explore you're less likely to encounter dungeons than if you follow it. Oblivion, in my opinion, did this better, with the roads being mainly safe and the cool stuff mostly being off-road. Fallout 4 makes the overworld feel like some kind of hub, a glorified dungeon menu. Stupid world layouts are a terrible immersion killer for me.

My problem with Bethesda's open world games is after you play one of them, suddenly the magic is gone for all the others. You realize it's a big empty box with set pieces dropped around it. It always pales in comparison to a smaller game where everywhere is handcrafted. The only happy medium between large open world and hand crafted ones I can think of is Stalker.

Utterly is too strong a word here. In Shadow of Chernobyl, once you're at the bar, there's plenty of areas open around you to visit instead of a direct one.
Call of Prypiat has only 3 very large areas to which you gain access in a linear fashion but those 3 areas are quite huge and essentially an open world in themselves. It's not so much linear but rather that you unlock another world to explore as well.
Besides, there was that mod that fuses the world map of all 3 games in a perfect combination for an open world game. Dunno how stable it was.

Call of Chernobyl, the mod you're referring to fuses all the areas into one big world map and adds a few extra, plus some cut content on top of that. Stable isn't a good word for stalker but it's really popular and very playable if you like having a completely open world experience with almost everything unlocked the moment you start off.

Stalker is utterly linear because the upgrades are very linear. In Elder Scrolls, you can acquire endgame gears without actually doing the main quests. Yep, the mod you're referring to is Call of Chernobyl, it's pure sandbox. It's not the only sandbox stalker mod out there, even stalker fans dislike the linearity of their favorite game.

Maybe. Thief 1 doesn't pull any punches with its world at all. It is mystical, dangerous, and some sections are closer to an adventure game than a stealth game. It is very rough around the edges. In Thief 2 they watered it down a bit so it's more closer to pure stealth. It honestly reminds me a ton of sneaking around in Deus Ex since it's all about medieval robots.

It's not that at all. It's Bethesda's random generating algorithm. I would rather explore tunnels and forests in Minecraft than a Bethesda game. Something about their level design. It just feels so empty and lifeless.

In Morrowind, no, everything has a fixed place. In Oblivion, you can grind by exploring dungeons and training to level up faster than doing the quests. In Skyrim, you can grind your smithing skill anytime you want and craft daedric gears.

Red Dead 2, its the autism outlaw sim I always wanted. It just needs some Ned Kelly armor to be perfect and a Hardmode though. Better than Ultima 7 if you know what I'm talking about. And before any boah goes on about the kneecap shots since that's the only thing crowbcat has on this game. They do make them limp and grip the wound. I've been testing it, I shot a guy in the shoulder and he was holding that while limping from a leg shot. Sometimes they flee screaming and stumble, dropping their gun and roll in their own blood from the squirting out wound. Most shotguns can blow limbs and heads clean off, and they give out a good scream too. There is a whole internal organ system and that goes for animals too. Its like R* actually watched crowbcat video and then went overboard just to spite him.

>Stalker is utterly linear because the upgrades are very linear.
This is a faulty reasoning because you're changing the definition of "linear" as it suits your argument. We were talking about map exploration but you're now shifting it to upgrades instead.
Yes, you can grind XP\Fame in Elder Scrolls games to get better versions of loot but the progression is still linear. Iron->Steel->Orchish->Ebony-Daedra for Heavy Armor for instance.
And it's not like any of your "upgrades" in any Elder Scrolls actually open up parts of the game, they just provide you better statistics to improve your odds in combat. In that case, it's almost as linear as a JRPG with the sole exception being Morrowind that lets you "sequence break" this if you know the game well.
However in terms of "linear vs open" world, while TES remains the clear winner in this regard, Stalker does not stop being an open world game just because the weapons you find in an area are inferior to the next ones or because there's a requirement of a main mission before you can unlock more of the world, especially considering how large the areas are.

You're confusing open world with nonlinear game.
>the progression is still linear. Iron->Steel->Orchish->Ebony-Daedra for Heavy Armor for instance.
That isn't linearity. Those just denote the quality of the gears the player uses. The means to acquire those gears aren't restricted by the game's events, only by player's capability (and the characters' capability when the gear availability is tied to the player's levels). The method of grinding in Elder Scrolls games in particular is incredibly open ended compared to most other RPG games. You can choose to grind through combat, repeated skill use, training, or crafting valuable items for Skyrim's instance.
Compare it to STALKER. You can't get the power armor without following a specific sequence of quests in specific order.
