DoDonPachi thread got me thinking:

What's up with shmups and edgy ass plots? Like the edgiest plots you can possibly find in video games are all in shmups.

>DonPachi

>turn out you're genociding your own race

>DoDonPachi

>turns out you're genociding your own race, genocide it again

>DoDonPach something something

>turns out gynoid navigators are all human girls that got forcibly made into living cpus

>Sinemora

>rape, genocide and blackmailing aside entire race is turned into blind/deaf/numb organic batteries for another race

>Sin and Punishment

>tl;dr genocide, cannibalism, body horrors and more genocide

I bet you can name some more.

In Cotton 2 you doom an entire kingdom by eating a magical item protecting it. It's played for laughs. I don't think I've ever take a story in a shooter seriously and that to me is a mark of quality.

R-Type and the Bydo.

Because science fiction is pretty edgy. That's all there is to it.

>Make human bioweapon against another civilization.

>The bioweapon gets yoinked to another dimension.

>Time passes.

>The bioweapon, now called the Bydo, finds humanity and tries to destroy it.

>Humanity fights back.

>The Bydo can convert any matter into Bydo matter, constructing massive massive weapons.

>They can even construct living machines with flesh and steel.

>Bydo weaponry gets reverse-enginereed creating a ship capable of dealing with the Bydo.

>The genetic composition of the Bydo is almost the same as a human being.

>Humans can be turned into Bydo.

**>R-Type Final levels have a poem pre-facing the stage. The final level has the following poem:

>"The Bydo are a man-made nightmare.

>And I cannot wake up… None of us can…

>The Bydo…"

>Your ship gets turned into a Bydo in one of the endings and sent into the past.

>In the first level, you can see your own Bydo ship flying on the background, and you learn that the reason that you were deployed was because your ship from the future destroyed everyone else.

Because it is cool.

Play Abadox for NES and Bio Hazard Battle for Mega Drive.

Abadox:

>Living organism the size of a planet ate your planet and everyone there.

>You use your ship to infiltrate the organism, facing levels that resemble intestines and brain cells of an organism, until you can destroy the colossal organism from the inside.

>Along the way, you fight deformed and mutated versions of the living beings from your planet, all with their insides exposed and mutated.

Bio Hazard Battle:

>Earth was destroyed and humanity went to space in colony ships to try to find a new planet.

>They found a new planet like earth, but it's civilization was completely destroyed by bio mutations from some unknown laboratory accident.

>You descend into said planet to fight off all the mutations, and all levels revel little by little what happened to the civilization there, from the dead military turned into bug mutants, to dead scientist turned into a living skeleton infested with worms, to the central command of the laboratory infested with mutated giant bacteria.

Go play those. They are great.

They don't want to spend a ton of time on establishing events with big emotional impacts, so instead they reach for outrageous events that probably deliver some impact even without any effort going into setup. See also: shonenshit.

>What's up with shmups and edgy ass plots?

How else you are going to explain player shooting at everything until it dies?

That's neat.

What's up with non shmups science fiction games having dull safe reused plots then?

They know no one pays attention to them.

Videogame stories are an afterthought. They make the game and then they hire some dudes to take care of the story. Most original idea wins.
