EVEN WITH THE RECENT TROUBLE, SUPPORT FALCOM GAMES AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. ENCOURAGE THE GOOD THINGS DONE OVER HERE WITH THE LOCALIZATIONS AND PERHAPS THEY WILL CONTINUE, AND IF NOT THEN VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET
>Latest News
-On the same day, October 26th, both Tom Lipschultz and Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery left XSeed. Apparently, their departures being simultaneous was a coincidence, at least according to both of them. Though details are slim, it looks as though Tom left by his own choice and Brittany was let go. Regardless this is a massive and possibly fatal change to XSeed. Tom was not only instrumental in securing ports for smaller obscurer Falcom titles like Zwei and Xanadu Next, he was also one of the staunchest defenders of anti-censorship practices in the localization business. His loss could easily mean XSeed is highly vulnerable to pozz. Every release must be carefully watched from now on. As for Hatsuu, she was a huge fan of Falcom games, particularly the Ys and Trails franchises, and was one of their biggest cheerleaders at the company. A Falcom game localized without her is sure to feel at least slightly different. The two most prominent faces of the company to the public are gone and the future of XSeed and Falcom games in the west is highly uncertain for now. All we can do is wait and watch vigilantly for what comes next.
- Falcom has announced they're working on a new Ys game set after Ys VIII. Right now there is no title, no word of whether the Tokyo Xanadu sequel Kondo talked about making is happening first and no other info other than it's being worked on.
- As of this posting Trails of Cold Steel 4 has been out for a month, so obviously the whole game is spoiled. Try to keep things behind spoilertext here.
- The PC port of Ys: Memories of Celceta released on July 25th, 2018.
- The Switch port of Ys VIII released with a litany of bugs, including not even having dual audio (NISA's sole claim to fame) at launch.
- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 51% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill). Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.
- Trails of Cold Steel I & II is now on PC through Steam and GOG with gameplay enhancements and newly voiced lines of dialogue.
- Ys Seven ported to PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Zwei!! and Zwei II are finally released on PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.
- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.

>Trails from Zero at 70% (being edited by Geofront/Zerk). There is already a beta (as in a rough translation done before Zerk even started working on it) out, though the quality is on the low side, though still coherent from start to finish
>Trails to Azure was leaked. There are a few typos and every once in a while there's an awkward line or two but all in all it's a solid translation. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/. Flame's edit of the translation is also out officially now. It's a better worded script at the cost of pretty much breaking the voice mod. Both are available packaged with torrents if you care to look for them.

TiTS can be a little annoying on hard when starting out, but it's not insurmountable. The biggest problem is you start the game with only two party members (and go back to that frequently) and your combat options are mostly limited to single target stuff early on, so there's not a lot of room for error. If you want a more comfy experience I'd definitely stick to normal on the Sky games.

I find normal to be fairly decent. The game's exp system prevents you from over leveling and it will still punish you for failing to take advantage of arts, crafts, etc. You also only have 2-3 party members for most of the game so it can get pretty rough on hard.
These games aren't like FF/DQ where you just grind and buy better gear and steamroll everything by spamming attack.

I'd have to say.. it's probably one of my favourite Trails games. But I'm not too fond of Lloyd. I don't hate him, it's just… you look at his image in the official art and he looks pretty cool and smug. And sometimes he could be, but it's just generally he's a stick in the mud. And the rest of the cast like him for it.
I would have appreciated him more if there was more to him than "I want to be like my brother/I'm determined/I'm observant/I'm smart yet oblivious as every single major female character sans 3 or so fall for me by me doing absolutely fucking nothing".
The girls in the game are all fine (even Elie. At the very least I'd jump into her arms over someone like Alisa) save for moments like that. They take everything innocent that Lloyd says to them as something romantic and get flustered about it. At least Rean had to spend some time with the girls (save Alisa) before they start blushing.
Hopefully he's better in CS3 and 4 since those are games that don't focus on him. In the ending of CS2 he seemed okay.

If you frequently watch anime with subs it probably won't bother you too much, though you'll have to excuse typos and general roughness (as well as formatting errors on occasion, like text running off the text box). I personally think the characters shine through despite this. Also since I have no idea how long it's going to take Geofront to finish, it will be your only option for some time. Ao is considerably more polished.

Hatsuu actually clarified this. This was dialogue recorded during the CS2 session. She figured that for people like Toval, who only have a small handful of lines in CS1, calling them in for the first recording session was a waste of everyone's time and money (she specifically said he'd have to fly in) so she did his CS1 lines when they did the CS2 recording with the intent of back-porting them in later. Not sure why it took this long, but this is the result of that. So, sadly, this isn't really evidence of anything. We're still in the dark. Still, it can't be denied that they bought the rights to the Japanese audio, which at least means something.

Just experiment with the orbment system. Characters have strengths and weaknesses via stats and you can either play up their strengths or cover their weaknesses using the customization. You'll never be stuck with a bad build because the game encourages customizing and re-customizing any chance you get. Though there are ways for certain characters to break the game.
Other than that, storywise it's not open ended. You go to a place, do quests there, then go back to your "base", do quests there, and then go to a new place as the story progresses. So if you want to 100% the game you need to do certain things in those locations, like look out for fishing spots. There are also hidden quests that don't show up in your book in each area; this also counts towards 100% completion. You find these quests by talking to people as you progress the main quest (it could be as simple as doing one thing in the main quest and then talking to someone right after), so the game encourages you to talk to NPCs a lot.

Marvelous Europe seems to have wanted to get in on the action instead of NISA Europe distributing it there as they usually do for Falcom releases, so that must've made Marvelous JP decide to throw their weight (and money) around it.
It used to only be XSEED who was involved, and XSEED isn't officially Marvelous's branch in the US, they're a subsidiary that handles Marvelous releases yes, but they do have some degree of autonomy and Marvelous is usually pretty hands-off and uninvolved with them outside of their own releases.

Well the first thing you should know is you're jumping into the series in the middle. Cold Steel functions decently by itself, but it still won't work nearly as well if you've played the Trails in the Sky games at the very least first. But as for what you were talking about, there are things like hidden quests and getting recopies and books which can lock you out of a few things. No big story content, but other things like weapons and quartzes and such. If you care about that sort of things maybe look for a guide. As for builds, you'll quickly find Cold Steel has multiple ways to break the game.

Yes and no, I noticed in Cold steel (after being an autist and talking to everyone) that there is usually an extra hidden quest after the urgent request is completed.
Here's how I played: Talk to all NPC's before starting the optional requests, start doing optional requests, start the urgent request and check if some random schmuck changed their dialogue, if not, proceed to complete the urgent request, start over after urgent request is completed.
If a "passage of time" (most of the time it's after the urgent request) has happened, there probably is something new to find.
That's how I managed to 100% the quests, recipes and fish on my first playtrough for CS1 and 2.

Yes. TitS also has hidden quests and books to collect. The collectable novel series in each game is always a way to get the best weapon for at least one character. However in that game recipes don't mean as much because there isn't a quartz tied to them. It just means you don't get the recipe. I recommend a max bp guide to not miss any hidden quests. Sometimes they can hide them in kind of bullshit places.
>the plot seemed to take a while to get going
Trails is all about the slow burn. Both Sky FC and Cold Steel 1 are more or less entire games worth of setup. FC is probably more guilty of it, but the foundation it builds is necessary to make what hits home in SC really make an impact. It's a series that takes it's time, but the pace is deliberate. You kind of have to be willing to let it ease you into a story and go at the pace it takes you.

It's not as "structured" as CS when it comes to the optional stuff. For example (without spoilers): in order to get a book, you need to talk to a merchant sitting at a table, but he won't give you anything the first time you talk to him.
So you need to start a plot cutscene that takes place in the same room as him (he won't give you the book after this dialogue is finished) you walk outside and another plot cutscene starts (here he will give you his book if you go back in and talk to him).
But if you enter the plot door, that is pretty much right next to the main characters (because no one else except the merchant changes his dialogue so why would you check him again?) you will never be able to get that book chapter.
TitS has more of those sneaky moments than the latter games.

CS4 in particular has a gigantic cast consisting of characters from all previous arcs. That's a big part of the appeal of the series. Alright, I think I'm about half way done with Mask of the Sun. It still controls really weird compared to the others. There is no trading damage, it's either deal or take damage, meaning a slime can bury you if you're not careful, forcing your bumps to be very precise. On the other hand, running around in circles seems to be the most effective way to deal with most encounters. Also, it was just that first boss that was stupid hard. The next boss was stupid easy. This game is just badly crafted.
Also, I don't care one bit about the story. There's people talking every once in a while, but it all boils down to keep running forward until the next cutscene happens. Even in Ys III, there was a semblance of having to pay attention to know what you're doing and where to go, and I cared about the cute loli and her brother, but this one is just training you to keep going through these linear as fuck tunnel dungeons. That's another thing. The dungeon design is just boring. There's nothing to it. Whenever there's a split, you go into one door and there's a treasure chest. Go the other way and it's progression. There's just nothing to do it. I get that this is SuFami, so there's hardware limitations, but that's no excuse.

Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand uses the same engine as the Mask of the Sun remake, but with some minor improvements. Since the original game is pretty slow too, the remake is considered an improvement. They also included some of the story elements that had to be cut from the original game.
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim is a port of the PC version. All sprites were replaced with 3D objects and the anime cutscenes were replaced with bad CGI cutscenes. They also had to tone down the violence a bit.

The visuals were completely redone but still low resolution (640×480).
In Ys I there are now 3 towns instead of 2, a lot more characters and the island is a lot bigger. The Story is also bit longer and there are a few minor sidequests. Ys II also has some minor improvements, but nothing as notable as the changes made to Ys I.

There is several versions of the PC remake:
Ys I Eternal & Ys II Eternal were the initial versions that were sold as separate games. Ys II Eternal had better visuals than Ys I Eternal. Both had a midi arangement soundtrack that is not as good as the PC Engine versions.
Ys I & II Complete were both games as a bundle and Ys I Eternals visuals were updated to be on par with Ys II Eternals.
Ys I & II Eternal Story is the PS2 version and as I mentioned it includes a few new characters and items. The music is still midi arangements but with pretty bad instruments.
Legacy of Ys: Books I & II is the DS version. It has a 3D environment using the sprites from the original 2D environment as textures. Instead of the bump combat you now have an attack button. It also has an exclusive boss. The music is a bit better than in the PS2 version. Overall this version is not very popular.
Ys I & II Chronicles is the PSP version. In it you can now choose between the original PC-88 soundtrack, the original PC soundtrack or a new version of the soundtrack by Yukihiro Jindo, who also remade the Ys III soundtrack for Oath on Felghana. You can also choose between new character portraits or the original ones from the PC version. The extras from the PS2 and DS versions are not included.
Ys I & II Chronicles+ is the English version of Ys I & II Complete for the PC. In this version XSEED ported back all of the additional features of the PSP version.

Well, I'm finally finished with the other Ys IV.
For the first time, I was unable to get all the items before completing it, and I think I missed out on another secret somewhere, but oh well. This was a lot of fun, but I feel relieved it's over. I kind of never want to play IV ever again. First Mask of the Sun poisoned all my optimism, Dawn gave it back but then somehow the game felt like it dragged on and on. Maybe it's all the cutscenes. It was a good game and I'm glad I played it, and I really had a sense of wonder while adventuring and exploring, but I don't know. I'm glad it's finally over. Something about IV just makes me never want to think about it.
I'm excited to get the fuck back to Falcom games. I hope they never outsourced anything else.
Also, Adol added another loli to his harem. I think all together in the series so far, he's at 3 lolis + Feena. Can't wait for the next loli in V.

Started on Ys V. This is really weird but enjoyable. I think I hate Super Famicom games. PC Engine is so much better hardware. Like High Score Girl taught me, "While everyone's talking about their Famicom or Sega, only the true gamers have PC Engine!"
The thing that caught my eye at first was how every area is split up into several different screens. I can't remember was even Final Fantasy on the SNES like this? It really breaks up the gameplay in a game that's supposed to be one continuous rush. Not to mention having to stand still to attack and block and all. It really doesn't feel like a Ys game, but it's not bad.
So far Ys III is the better Ys alternative. That one actually felt like a Ys game even though it's Zelda II. It was one single rush to the end and it felt great to control.
In any case, I'm having fun with Ys V even through my complaints. It's nice to take a break from traditional Ys after the slog IV was to me.

The aureole is that small yellow stone that Campanella gave it to the Ourobouros Grandmaster? Is it the ultimate septium of Space? Everything it created, including Phantasma, was with the power of Space and more? How could it create copies of Gehenna and Heaven?
Stigmas. I understand that there are, at most, 12 of them in the world. When one appears on someone, the Church will try to make them become a Dominion. What exactly are Stigmas? Why one was sentient and inside Phantasma, creating and controlling all of these things? Is there a "personafication" behind every Stigma?

I think Cold Steel gets criticism more because of its artstyle and it's students in a school setting (which it drops for the most part after CS1. CS3 retains it but with a twist). Otherwise in terms of structure CS1 is closer to Sky 1, and CS2 is closer to Sky 2.

True, but activating your defensive abilities wasn't instantaneous (there were a slight handful of wind-up frames with stuff like Earth Guard), and it was tied to a (rechargeable) resource so you couldn't really spam it. Meanwhile Flash Guard is instant and can be spammed to extend its invincibility duration by spamming the FG button for as long as you are colliding with an attack hitbox. If you ever got stuck Flash Guarding inside a tornado in Ys Seven, you'll know it's not pretty.

>>15808160
>The aureole is that small yellow stone that Campanella gave it to the Ourobouros Grandmaster?
Yes.
>Is it the ultimate septium of Space?
It's more like an extremely advanced artifact.
>Everything it created, including Phantasma, was with the power of Space and more? How could it create copies of Gehenna and Heaven?
Phantasma wasn't technically the Aureole, though it was part of the Liber Ark system. It was what allowed the people of the Liber Ark to live in their false delusions and grant their desires. Aka: it basically created fake virtual worlds for them. This ultimately led to stagnation and insanity. Though to say they were entirely fake would not be completely accurate, since it does involve other planes to some extent (hence the power of space). Gehenna looked exactly like Kevin thought it would because, well, that's how Kevin thinks Gehenna would look. The spirits inside are fiends, but fiends able to tap into memories to mimic to the souls of the dead. CS4 actually goes a little bit further into this in a cool quest.
>Stigmas. I understand that there are, at most, 12 of them in the world.
Not necessarily. There could be more or less. All we know is that there are 12 dominion seats (not all of them necessarily filled, since it's confirmed seats can go unfilled for years) and to be a dominion you have to possess a stigma.
>What exactly are Stigmas?
It's honestly still not 100% clear. They seem to be some sort of way to harness the power of an artifact (which is a powerful device from another plane) and channel it though one's self. Carving a stigma seems to require trauma, which gives you the potential. Then you need to absorb an artifact (this also seems to require an emotion trigger of some sort too…maybe). CS3 threw a bit of wrench in this though by adding that stigmas can actually be transferred to another person, something we didn't know until that game
>Why one was sentient and inside Phantasma, creating and controlling all of these things? Is there a "personification" behind every Stigma?
That, more than Kevin's stigma, was Phantasma itself. It latched onto Kevin when the Liber Ark fell because the massive amount of power from his stigma was the next strongest thing from a higher plane it could latch on to. And since Kevin was a broken person full of trauma and self hate, Phantasma became that. So no, typically stigmas don't have a "will." Phantasma just facilitated that.
>>15808329
>And also criticized because of the ability to choose a waifu (but you can also choose a bro or none at all).
In CS4 you can only choose a girl for the final bond, and there are 11 to choose from (though you can also pick no one and hang out with a few other dateless bros). However, Crossbell was really to progenitor of all this. CS just took it the next step.

More information in two weeks regardless.

We just don't know what it is yet. My best guess is something Xanadu…maybe? Kondo talked about a Tokyo Xanadu sequel some time back. This could be that or it might not. Until then it's just mysterious. The girl looks goth-y, though…so that's nice. Assuming it's representative of what the product will be at all, which it might not be.

>I imagined that the Church gives these people an offer they can't refuse. Or maybe they're always miserable people who are happy that someone will take them in.
It's a little of column a and b. My only point was that it's not clear if the Church is automatically alerted when a stigma manifests or not. We simply don;t know enough and probably won't until the series actually goes to Arteria…probably in the finale.

There's nothing wrong with complaining about the games anon.
Seeing people shitpost or complain in an overly simplistic way is annoying to be sure, but its better than having a pure circlejerk where no negativity is allowed.
Ideally people would critique more, that is put evidence, arguments, effort and thought into their posts and avoid loaded language and exaggerations but overly constricting people won't produce anything meaningful at the end of the day

I've never played it, but based on the research I did with what little info there was to find, it was Falcom farming out the IP to a 3rd party. In this case Future Creates, a company so obscure that it has no wikipedia page and Ys Strategy was the only game I could actually find that they made. Reviews called it middling but…I dunno, someone could pirate it to see what they think. If it's even up somewhere anymore.
