I haven't tried it myself since the bulk of the games I've wanted to play on mine are single player or now have dead servers, but Brewology lists a homebrew app called "PSN Patch". I don't know how well, or if, it even works at this point though since the last apparent update was January of last year. Regardless, it does not state that it is foolproof by any means, and just made it safer to go on the PSN as a spoofer ability, not "safe". Maybe someone else with experience with doing so can say better.

It does, but a lot of the classic standbys switched to handhelds due to cheaper development costs (which I'd consider to be more of the ) and/or died off during or prior to seventh gen. The likes of Final Fantasy, Tales, and Atelier certainly stuck around with it, though of course, depending on the series (or opinion on JRPGs in general), whether they're worthwhile or not, or if the subgenre was dead by that point, is up for debate.

All PS3 models have ability to play PS1 games (though there are some incompatibilities), and Cobra emulation for PS2. That said, it's still emulation, and actual PS2 hardware would probably serve better, though I've heard, even with the PS2 chip, the 20/60gb have enough of a difference from an actual PS2 for there to be running difference that affect some genres worse than others. Fats do have the ability with CFW to either use Cobra or the native chip, resulting in the first being emulation and the latter being loading the "disc". I'm just saying, and fats do have their own longevity issues.

Random question. Can I use dd to copy the PS3 HDD? I want to make backups of my drive without needing a network connection it's not modded

I don't think the drives are encrypted with any unique key, but it's better to use the PS3's built in backup and restore.

I wanted to avoid that because it takes forever, I need a fat32 drive, and it requires a network connection to activate the console when you do a restore

for platformers you have Jak series and remaster of original Ratcher + the new series which is fairly good

Yeah you can go online with the cfw. Need to register an account before installing cfw but after that you just install something.

Don't remember the name of it, but it will likely pop up in whatever instructions you find for installing the latest cfw via the web browser exploit.
