It seems like everyone who loves this game has a 3 terrabyte folder of 2B porn and a huge portion of the appeal is that the protagonist is waifu bait and you can stare at her ass/cunt when you go up ladders and shit like that. I like her but I don't think she's that much better than most other anime-type girl characters I know of. I've never liked a square enix game I've played, but I think that's because everyone I've tried is final fantasy, and I can't stand FF or turn-based combat. I loved it, the move list is simple but also has some complex depth(most people don't know you can chain like 5-6 jumps through combos). The story is esoteric about what it means to be human and is touching at times and slightly weird in a Japanese way at other times. There are some thought provoking moments which I loved. The voice acting in English or Japanese are both good. The music is best of last year hands down. All that being said my best friend thought it was mediocre and I usually have similar taste to him but I also think he's sort of grown out of JRPGs. Anyway try the demo for free, beat it and you'll have a good indication of what the game is like. I'd give it a 9/10. It's main fault for me was the second playthrough was slightly tedious, the endings after that are all easy and worth seeing through. The final ending was awesome in the vein of MGS.

Yes. PC port is still shit and needs third party fixes though. The game has a very repetitive part after the first ending where you switch to your sidekick but gets better once you're out of those same missions and move onto new content. It also underuses the best player character in my opinion, best moveset and movement but least amount of time played. It's one of those games where there is more substance than style, but style is so overwhelming normalfags automatically assume there is no substance at all.
While knowing plot of Drakengard and Nier is highly beneficial, Automata itself has a wealth of its own supplementary materials, including light novel, musical and another light novel that further links it with Nier 1.
And just as the other anon mentioned it's deep not just because muh narrative, gameplay can also go pretty deep with customization, elaborate combos and moves, and bending game's rules to the point where you can be fucking invincible and face tank super secret boss on high difficulty, that would normally one shot you.
And of course there is Dante Must Die mode available right off the bat, which requires completely different approach to building your combos and stats.
It's easy to just slap "masterpiece" on this shit and walk away, but it's as close to being quintessential video game releasing full potential of the media as you can get without going into Dwarf Fortress territory.

For gameplay? Not really. >>15601926 hit the nail on the head. DMC, Bayonetta, and even *KH* have more combat depth. The game is also on the easy side if you play on Normal or Hard. To its credit there is an instant death difficulty option (Very Hard) in which everything kills you in one hit, but it's not exactly a feasible option for a first playthrough; yet hard mode is too easy even for a first playthrough. There is no middle man. Also, it switches to the world's easiest shmup ever made during some occasions. These are probably the worst segments of the game, because they're mind numbingly boring.
Playing it for the story? Maybe. It's feelsy and it works well at times, but it's all very predictable and hampered by a lot of weird, bizarre locales and characters that wouldn't be out of place in a Suda51 game.
It does have a good OST, at the very least. It's at least worth pirating if you haven't tried it yet.

Reminder that the only reason why "4k" is a meme in the first place is because Sony's machine is too piss weak to handle VR properly - so they had to release upgraded hardware to support it. "4k" was just additional advertising to get people not interested in 4k into upgrading, where their first VR experience (if they tried it) would be substantially better. That's why Sony never bothered to actually try to hit the 4k mark, and why the machine doesn't play 4k movies. They just use some algorithm to upscale a 1080p image.
Microsoft comes along and believes the lies that Xbots tell themselves about PS4 only winning because it's more powerful - and try to make a "true 4k" multimedia machine (that still can't hit true 4k 60) to satisfy a market that doesn't exist. Even on PC where users have access to what might as well be next-gen technology by comparison (and are sitting far closer to the screen where graphical artifacts are much more noticeable), the vast majority of displays are still in a sweetspot of 1080p or 1440p.

Virtually every other game in its genre. The prologue is literally (and hilariously) the only challenging part of Very Hard, and it only applies on a blind/fresh run (not NG+). After that there are so many chips you can use to cheese through the game (Counter, Reset, Overclock, Stun). If you're ever stuck you can always sit back and kill things from a distance, as the AI doesn't know how to deal with it, and the shmup sections are so easy that you shouldn't be getting hit anyway unless you're just really bad at shmups.

The game's weird and solid, as you'd expect from when a crazy like Yoko Taro somehow gets a competent development team. 2Butt is just icing. Very strongly advise that you start on normal difficulty, because unless you're really confident you can grok the way the game plays, you have no opportunity to save for a fair stretch of game, maybe 20-30 minutes, and on hard there's not much room for error. Nier Automata is one of the few games that I could really call good lately. The game has problems and is lacking in some sort in every area yes, but nothing is ever perfect.
For some people the appeal is waifu material yes, but the game really does have a lot to offer depending on what you are looking for. Personally I loved the music, gameplay and story. That is somewhat skewed though since I liked the story of the whole series and quite enjoyed drakenguard 3 overall as well. If your looking for a copy on the ps4 it can be found for pretty cheap even new, and if your looking on pc I would say just pirate it.
Personally I have it on the ps4 and cannot say I regret my decision to buy it. Besides getting my moneys worth in enjoyment out of the title, I have sat down with my daughter and watched her pay through to ending a, she liked it enough that I got her a copy for her birthday and she just finished the b route.
I think a lot of the appeal depends on personal taste and what your looking for in a game in the end. The game is a good game, but just because a game is good doesn't mean you will like it after all.
