I loved this shit so much I deleted my save files after soloing the super-hard minigame to get ending E even though I wasn't connected to the network. Drakengard is a hard sell as it's not a very entertaining game. It works on its story and atmosphere and it's not a bad idea to go in like its a normal Japanese fantasy game. Nier is a solid game but even simpler than Automata in terms of combat. At this point it's a good middle ground between Taro's early work and his current.

I had the same problem at first. At least on Windows 10, setting it's priority in the task manager to "Realtime" eliminated all crashing. The catch was I either had to play in windowed or fullscreen with a mouse cursor permanently in the center. And didn't you know? Fixing all the bugs they left in is just meta-gameplay. The game doesn't want you to play it because it's ultimately pointless so you have to literally beat the software itself in order to just start the game. Truly a masterpiece.

I also never figured out who created YoRHa. Was it: the machines or the androids? If it was the androids, who/where were the androids that created the whole conspiracy? At first I thought it had to be the machines spurring on the androids to keep the conflict going, but there are documents in the game that contradict that theory. Is Yoko Taro enough of a troll/alcoholic to intentionally include completely false in-game documents as a red herring?

Yeah, hacking was definitely the weakest part plus it made combat trivial. They should have made hacking more of a puzzler and less of a shooter. They also should have let you remote control/subjugate machines if you beat the hacking minigame exceptionally fast instead of only when you're not aggroed. It seemed like the subjugation/remote control mechanics were super-underutililized. 9S should have been subjugating machines even while you played as 2B. I liked when they incorporated the hacking minigame into the story though.

Yes, it was the androids. The entire purpose of Project YoRHa was to fool the world into believing humanity still existed– that Project Gestalt hadn't ultimately failed– without leaving any witnesses that this ruse had ever happened. Remember, all androids to begin with were made to further the ends of Project Gestalt. If androids still believed humanity was alive, they continued to have a purpose in life. The entire charade was to prevent androids as a whole from having to face the fact that their existence was meaningless.
A funny thing to note is that despite appearances and unknowing to the androids, Emil and all his copies are human– in fact, they are the only humans left. They are true human gestalts with magically ruined bodies and minds, but human nonetheless. The first time 2B and 9S meet Emil, their first reaction is to kill him, and the end of Emil's quest results in all of them being killed by 9S and 2B. The reason why Emil and Halua were not killed by WCS is presumably due to the fact that they have magical powers to begin with– in the Drakengard world this is attained by making a 'Pact' with a magical being. Because pacts have already been made for Halua and Emil's souls (with WCS itself being a pact with god or he turns you to salt) one can assume the maso particle has no effect on them as they have already forged a pact previously, and you can't do it twice.
