xseed has always tried to release uncensored when they can, and they're releasing it uncensored on a different platform. That announcement also came out as a result of them being forced to censor games like monster monpiece.

They've released all their Falcom games on GoG (which is a lot). I assume the reason they don't release their other games is because GoG's past curation wouldn't allow them. They were notoriously tight about their quality, and there are almost no anime or japanese games on GoG's catalog. Well, I guess that's no more games of interest this year. Would say maybe Vesperia, but that's not this year (early next January), and I'm concerned as to whether or not the entire thing will even make it over intact, between Berseria's censorship prior, particular scenes that were newly added for the JP PS3 version (Rita's Drawer, for instance), and handling of Patty (who likes trying to tell other characters that Yuri is her husband despite her being a kid). For all I know, the fan-translation patch of the PS3 version (which has since been taken down from the group's site) might still be the best way to play it going forward.

Do have to wonder if this policy, if it really is one, is why the game got further pushed back prior, or if this is another issue on top of it.

Would be nice, but that assumes that a) there isn't internal agreement with the decision, and b) SCEA/SCEE actually give a fuck about how much profit the company has lost out on. In the case of the latter, if the idea would be to try to sway Sony's western branches to abandon the policy (and perhaps allow the content to be patched back in), it's worth remembering that for some people, the message being sent outweighs the money lost on it, and in the case of Sony, I wager they have very little money involved in if this game is a success or not.

I think PEGI to ESRB comparison gets kind of weird when you consider that NA is a lot more broad, at least as to where T and M lie. PEGI seems to have multiple levels of their T equivalent to our single one here, which even include "Mature - 15" or something like that, which in some cases is enough to get (lazy) companies like Bamco to censor across the entire west because while a game would still be the same rating in NA, it's suddenly above standard rating for the series in PAL (which I've heard was the case with Berseria's child impalement and dismemberment). And again, you have PAL boards being rather ridiculous about things. Unfortunately Xseed will take a hit from this even if people switch to the PC version. The physical copies and special editions will rot on the shelves because a lot of people that typically buy these games, myself included, won't buy the PS4 version now. Doubtful that SCEA or SCEE would want a free Steam code to be given in a PS4 product. Maybe if they made it a "provide proof of purchase, get code emailed" sort of thing, where it's entirely on XSEED's end. And they were already investing money into extras for the PS4 versions as well, the base version having been upgraded to including an OST and free DLC.

NISA and Ys VIII got nuked from orbit as a result of it. They had thousands of nips screaming over there about it, and tens of thousands of NA/EU fans on Steam and GoG here.
