If Microsoft really wanted more Japanese game and support like they claim to, they'd make their next gen Xbox a censorship-free platform and entice lewd game and VN developers over as a safe haven. Kind of like how going into last-gen, Sony were so proud of their fucked-up Cell architecture that they weren't greenlighting games which weren't visually appealing enough - so a lot of 2D stuff and shmups got shitcanned and ended up going over to the 360, which gave the console a niche following in Japan and attracted the weeb-lite audiences who couldn't afford a PS3 or weren't happy with how Sony was handling the system.

It could have been that the 360 had a bad reputation in Japan due to the red ring of death. I'm surprised it didn't cause more problems in America and Europe but whatever. Even the PlayStation 3 didn't really do too well in Japan compared to the previous PlayStations. It was the DS and the PSP that one that generation in Japan essentially. And there were tons of games on those systems that have stayed japan-only unfortunately.
Microsoft is now just buying developers in the West like Ninja Theory to see if it can build games or lease exclusives that people want to play. They paid for Japanese exclusive before it didn't work out. And I don't really see it working out this time either even with these Studios. They're all going to end up like lion head.
PC is the way forward for Japanese development. I think it would behoove Japanese developers to develop on PC first and then port to console and maybe mobile as a backup.

The reason for it's failure is multi-fasceted, but it's not due to xenophobia like I hear far too many people claim. Japan is only too happy to buy western brands, so long as that brand is chic and has a reputation for quality. Microsoft is neither. It shouldn't be understated either that that "X" in Japan is a negative indicator, with circle being a positive indicator, hence the "O-X swap" in control schemes. So the XBox is literally the "No/Don't/Bad" Box. It's literally like launching a game console in America called the Fail Box.

Only in that it's still the dominant OS for workplaces and offices, so it's the OS that most people are going to be familiar with. And because it's the most used OS worldwide, it's also the most used OS in Japan due to support and compatibility. Especially now with developers not having to go through app stores anymore unless they really need to. That could also be a way to get around censorship. They could even released two versions an app store version and an uncensored version on their website
There's really nothing that a Vita or a switch can do that most mobile phones can't do these days. In Japanese games in general don't really push Hardware or Graphics too hard with their cartoony art styles.

As I recall the guys over at censored gaming spoke with somebody at the ESRB and it seems to be that anything with a cartoony art style gets a harder push for censorship because cartoon equals children to the Western World. So the idea is that children will want to buy something that looks animated regardless of the rating so it has to be censored for their safety. Versus something like Game of Thrones or The Last of Us which has a realistic art style that wouldn't necessarily appeal to children. At least from what I remember that was the pitch they gave.
There was also a bit of a middle ground where something like kagura could have a good amount of sexual content in the game but its packaging couldn't show that so it had to be toned down compared to the Japanese packaging which seems completely counter-intuitive if you don't want kids to get a hold of it.

If you have noticed consoles are becoming irrelevant and more cancerous really in the long run. Mobile Hardware gets better and better every year. The Nintendo switch is based on mobile Hardware already from nvidia's Shield tablet and phone division.
The games are already developed on PC is so a port really shouldn't be that difficult especially since everything is x86 compatible across the board with the consoles. Stuff like the switch which is arm-based once again should translate to phones and tablets quite easily. And as I told you there is possibility for far-left censorship now that Publishers and developers can sidestep app stores this point in time. Look at one of the biggest games rolling right now fortnite is on everything and you can get it on your Android phone without having to use the Walled Garden of the app stores. That means the developer doesn't have to pay a fee to Apple or Google. Theoretically they could probably do the same thing on PC I don't know if there's any rule about having the steam release and a drm-free release on your own website. That would be pretty awesome and a good for customer relations with these developers so the customers could support the developers directly

Steam is transitioning away from being a games only platform anyway now that it sells software and video titles like big AAA movies and even full seasons of anime. Their days of being the biggest game store in the world are coming to an end with publishers and even developers deciding to sell direct to the customer so they don't have to pay that 30% hit valve demands. It doesn't really solve the DRM issue as all of the biggest Publishers have a hard-on when it comes to DRM and ridiculous Hoops to make the consumer jump through.

We're talking about games that are censored by another publisher. Tales of Berseria was censored by Namco Bandai, the same people who made the game. Mugen Souls Z and Agarest were done by Ghostlight. The mentality behind exclusives was that they were meant to give your consoles a boost in sales, that you'd finnaly buckle up and buy a console because it has a few exclusives you couldn't play anywhere else. The idea was that the console has something you can't get anywhere else.
So with a consecutive release for PC that has the base game + the intimacy mode (which isn't the main thing but it's still a big thing) then why would anyone buy the console version? It's not like Senran Kagura is that demanding in terms of specs anyway, just about anyone has a good enough PC for it.
I get that the PS3 was the famous "Panty Underage Quest" console, tons of weeb games with fanservice, and maybe Sony wanted to move away from it. But the result was the PS4 and it's poor library. I mean, I have one and there's plenty of neat games to play on it for anyone with a very broad taste, but otherwise this is removing one of the niches that the previous console managed to break into when no other console did.
If the idea of Sony is to prepare for the PS5 with a "clean image", that's gonna fail and backfire horribly. With Steam allowing porn and even Nintendo allowing Senran Kagura on the Switch, they'll be losing that part of the market, which means they'll be depending on exclusives yet again to save their new console. Maybe they won't have to compete with the Xbox anymore (not on serious terms anyway), but they do have to compete with the Switch, which is an immidiate loss due to portability, and the PC, which is another loss based on specs alone and now because of executive meddling as well.
They are cornering themselves into becoming the Call of Duty/FIFA/Uncharted Station at this point, which means hanging their whole future on 3 IPs alone.

I could honestly say the same thing about facing random issues on PC ports of japanese console games tbh. EDF 4.1, handled by XSeeD, works wonders on my machine but sometimes it would just crash for no apparent reason but only when opening the weapons/class selection menus.
Obviously I know NISA is garbage throughout, and they only deserve a pirate. I'm still interested in an eventual PC port of Disgaea 1 Complete tho but even the PS4/Switch version has bugs in the localization (translation itself is actually good, because Disgaea 1 was originally handled by Atlus on PS2 while NISA didnt exist yet at this time)

I guess, for me, I don't have a problem distinguishing when something is intended for children and when its not. Even for things that heavily blur that line. I kept saying in these threads that Nintendo has made the Switch primarly for the Japanese audience, a lot of it's design choices specifically with that in mind.
The Switch is going to be the weeb console because that's the Niche nintendo is going for right now for expansion since they are all full with the "kids game" and "party game" niches already.
This is why the Switch is portable (long commute hours), simple to carry and use with friends (just snap the controllers out and hand one over) and even uses cellphone apps for voice chat (jap teens are more used to cellphones than PCs) and since most of their playerbase has already gone way past their 20s, some of the videogames coming out being mature makes perfectly sense.
I'm not entirely happy about this since with the Xbox being a door stopper and the PS4 cornering itself in an even smaller niche, the Switch will lose competition and that's never good for the consumer, but for the time being I'm quite happy with what the Switch is becoming.
