Considering how Linux isn't a solid foundation anymore, what is a good alternative OS to use for computer gaming, aside from using previous OS versions, or even considering macOS to be a serious possibility? These few posts over on /tech/ listed some options available: >>>/tech/979674

Look, it's really not fucking hard to understand that you can copy an open source piece of software, change it, and give a middle finger to the people who are now in charge of maintaining it. I don't understand why you want to categorize everything POSIX based–or whatever, honestly I have no clue what your criterion is–as Linux so badly. The fact of the matter is if you want to use an OS with reasonably good drivers for gaming, at all, you are going to be "cucked" in some form or another, because those drivers simply don't exist on any other platform.

Most recent console emus do some level of API translation because shit is so much faster and reliable than trying to build an hardware only emu and a software only emu and then chain them together.

Pretending that emulators only or primarily emulate hardware is silly, especially when their end goal is almost always running some software outside its usual environment.

Windows can do the same thing. It has nothing to do with that. The reason Linux is dominant on servers is because of history. UNIX was invented by a telecoms company for their personal needs. When the internet first started taking off companies adopted UNIX because it was invented by a telecoms company and they knew it would provide the best framework and support for servers. After UNIX fucking died server admins needed a new upgrade path, by this point there were two options, Windows NT and the then-new Linux. They chose Linux because in the end Linux was compatible with UNIX so it was the most logical upgrade path and the least expensive route. Its just history, nothing more and nothing less.

>The Haiku OS team is trying to port every open source program under the sun. Just go look at their repositories and see for yourself.

I took a look and I'll admit it's better than I thought. It has LibreOffice, Krita, Audacious, OpenShot, Gwenview, Mplayer2 + basic codecs, torrent clients, pdf viewers and writers, and even lots of emulators and sourceports so you can even play a few games on it (though I'm not sure how well they'll perform without hardware acceleration). Most are up to date versions, too. I suppose that's enough for basic use.

However, it's still missing some other basic programs (GIMP, VLC, Blender, Audacity, Virtualbox) and it's pretty lacking on more advanced tools such as disk, system info/monitoring and network tools. And of course, there's the no drivers issue.

>Supposedly, you can also run Wine on Haiku.

It runs but it's not really usable, since the Haiku port is very unstable and very buggy. It apparently has lots of issues due to the way Haiku handles memory differently than Linux and Windows. At least that's what the page you linked to says.
