KoF XIV had almost 50 characters, BEFORE the DLC.
For comparison, SSVSpecial had 28 characters, and SSVI had 40 (excluding bonus characters like the animals and recolors)
If they put the same amount of effort into SSVII that they put into KoFXIV, the roster could very easily have every character worth having and more.
I really just hope they dont care too much about "MUH TIMELINES" and let any character in even if they arent supposed to be around.

I think the roster will be around 20-something characters like SoulCalibur VI. Remember that SamSho is way more matchup and character based than KOF so focus on more unique than variations of said archetype is more expected. At most, I think we'll get Bust-style characters like Rera and Rasetsumaru that are popular and play significantly enough to be their own characters.
Also, I think they will change some inputs just like they did to Nak already in XIV. Not dumbed down but at least you don't get another move like doing her slide attack instead of the rdp veil move. I just want to kind of evasion move like in V Special instead of just strick slashes and kicks from II. Doesn't need to be that deep but some kind would be great for the new game. Sword gauge as well to teach you to NOT mash.
Basara is alive in that timeframe and he's popular, so I guess he's fine.

There is probably more that goes into making a SamSho character than a KOF character, so I'm not expecting more than 20-30-ish fighters on release, if even that many. My prime worry with the roster is that there's a lot of interesting character designs throughout the series and the flavor and gameplay variety characters like Yunfei, Gedo, Enja, and the like bring is part of why I love VSp so much and I feel like those characters may be left on the table.

In addition to >>15438469 I would check out World Heroes Perfect, Waku Waku 7, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, and possibly even some Samurai Shodown games (this one may sound weird but VSp systems wise feels a lot like an anime game that just happens to lack combos, and III and IV both have some pretty crazy combos, there's also a lot of SamSho DNA in Guilty Gear, it actually was initially planned as a spiritual successor to SamSho). Elements from those games all ended up appearing again and getting expanded upon in airdashers and they'll at least feel somewhat familiar.

That's exactly what it is, yeah. You get Salt (temporary currency) for playing online matches, and go into a cave behind a waterfall to use that Salt to open an entrance to a series of caves. Yeah, part of me wants to believe there's a proper Lizardman character outside of just the generic NPC ones, and if you're autistic enough and look at the few frames of action we have of him you can clearly see distinct hunched animations for him. However, all the signs point to a 20-character roster on day 1.
The saddest and most likely explanation is that the remaining four slots are for DLC, just like how dbz launched with a bunch of empty space. The CaS style selection pretty much confirms this, since he's not where he always has been in these style lists (between Xianghua and Yoshimitsu). The unique animations and the story mode art makes me wonder if he's not a real character but his style is CaS exclusive (and maybe even the only available style for the lizard race), which would be beyond retarded but not entirely implausible.

3 was the one that came out to mostly lukewarm reception, damage was too high and the game had a ridiculous amount of broken shit in it so rounds could end in less than 10 seconds. 4 fixed those problems and some people look back on it with fondness, but now that you're not actively losing money to play them people have come around on 3 since it being more broken paradoxically makes it more balanced than 4 where there's only a few really viable characters. It also is the only way to experience the beautiful sprites they made for latter era SamSho properly, since other games started cutting out frames of animation to save space.

My primary concern for Charlotte is that I don't want her moveset to be gutted, she feels really good in VSp with Bayonet Lunge to control a lot of space, along with holding her projectile and the hit grab she has. I also hope they have some way to get Splash Fount consistently out without telegraphing it with a normal, VSp has a way to do it but it's basically macro only which has screwed me sometimes.
Looking up her Sprite from SamSho 2, it's crazy how much of an improvement it is over the first game, and the secondary motion on her hair with her idle does look nice, gives her a more active feel which can work though the more firm foot placement of the SamSho 4 Sprite fits her overall playstyle a bit better in my opinion.

Well, the problem is that Last Blade is a polar opposite to SamSho in terms of gameplay. But while Samurai Shodown is quite unique with its damage and low focus on combos, Last Blade didn't really add much to the genre and many reffers as "Street Fighter with swords". So you can and maybe SNK even will put Last Blade characters in SamSho giving Hibiki, Yuki, Akari, Kaede and Setsuna being popular but they wouldn't play at all like they do in their original games so don't know if people would like that.

III was honestly hated when it came out especially considering it follows up II which still today is regardad as one of the best fighting games. The darker and more gritty tone, the fucked up balance no Charlotte and drastic changes in inputs and gameplay that they only got it "right" by V. All of those put down many fans. IV being busted in terms of balance, really low damage and adding combos didn't go well either with the general audience so everybody just kept playing II or moved on to other franchises since 3D SamSho were never that good.
The problem with V was being released on a really old board and V special coming right before Nevada-tan happened so all the ports were censored to even broken. VI completely removing blood, the weird groove system plus broken Iroha didn't make that iteration popular too.

From what I've seen, people are saying it's simple because they're judging it by fighting game standards instead of its own standards. It's definitely very simple (two attack buttons, no lows, block button, smash bros inputs, etc.), but the entire game has been built around this rather than something like ArcSys games' stylish mode (bolted onto the existing game) or one of their simplified fighters such as DBFZ or BBTAG, which are fighting games that happen to have autocombo/chain normals instead of the proper layout.
SNKH is like a party game/fighting game hybrid. There's definitely depth: characters have limits on how they can juggle based on whether a move hit raw or in a tag combo, certain items like walls and bombs can let you combo in different sections of the screen, and so on. You can also stock assist moves as items, which lets you do combos like you'd expect from any tag or team game, and items (I think) can be used to interrupt opponents' combos and pressure.
It's certainly not the most complicated game ever made, but there's definitely stuff going on.

I posted something a while back, maybe even a long time ago in a previous fighting games general. Fighting games have come a very long way. There's an endless supply of perfect waifus, interesting fighting game mechanics, and more variety than ever. But there's one aspect that for me will always be essential and it's something I can trace back further than when fighting games became a definite genre.
Though it's been a long time since beat 'em ups have been relevant, I've always saw fighting games as "very elaborate beat 'em ups" even now after beat 'em ups are basically long gone. The way that beat 'em ups were satisfying to play, at least for me, was how much impact and how hardcore each hit felt when you're beating up an enemy. In an old AVGN video, I think the Battletoads review, he was really into it emphasizing how badass it felt for a frog to punch away an enemy. That's something that many fighting games are forgetting to maintain. The animations and styles are getting better, but the feel is something that is getting lost.
That's what I look for in a fighting game, the feel of it. If it looks, sounds, and more importantlyfeels good to beat up your opponent hit-by-hit then that's all I really need. If the beat 'em up inside your fighting game is shitty, then there's something wrong with your fighting game.

It's admittedly not the best criteria but I admit it's the visuals that draw me in, I'll only play if I like how it looks. That part done, I like FGs with short combos where there's a lot of back and forth, Soulcalibur 1 and Nightwarriors (DS2) are my two favorites in the genre.

The impact behind moves is a thing I felt some of my favorites got right - SFA2 with the sfx, you land a fierce with Zangief and that shit sounds like it knocked teeth off; Darkstalkers series has the characters burned, shocked, sliced in half (both vertically and horizontally), cursed, squashed, bled and in GGX to AC+, I've always loved the impact from special moves, they felt very satisfactory to land, things like Zato's command grab, Johnny's Mist Finer, Slayer's Dandy Step punch etc. Not a series I love but it is the one I own and played it somewhat seriously, there's also Tekken 5; I mained Bryan because I loved landing those straight punches.

Then Shimbori started to backpedal hard, especially in recent interviews, after the massive backlash the game was receiving both in the west and east and posing rhetoric of how he wanted to "appeal to everyone." But it's too late, his retarded PR already did a crap ton of damage to this game that it will carry for a long time until release.
The issue was always Shimbori being a jackass, which bit him and his game in the ass, and are now trying to desperately correct course (you can tell from the latest trailer) and how the whole marketing to pander to E-sports or world trends is noticeably gone in recent interviews. If you mean Nightmare, you should know by now that he can't really be killed. Nightmare is just an avatar of an ancient demon who lives in another plane and the whole existence is to bring said plane to the world. Every time Nightmare and the sword is destroyed, it comes back as long as there's malice in the world. The world is full of people influenced by the evil seed and the more you get near it, the more fucked up your life will be.

Technically, Skeletons and Elves are already in SC, Revenant is a canonical skeletal servant of Zasalamel, and Scheherazade might have been a guest artist character from SC4, but she's fully integrated with the lore and has a good excuse to exist.
Also despite Vampires really only being Amy and Raphael, it's an effect of malfestation, and there's no reason it couldn't happen to other people, and just wasn't focused on.
Undead are already a possibility, and Egypt is a location in the series, so mummies aren't really all that cracky in the lore. Even winged creatures and beastfolk aren't out of the picture considering that the Astral Chaos is full of life, and the Evil Seed event caused a shitload of errant and random mutations all across the board, and there's a cult that that Astaroth was born into that's literally churning out lizardmen using Soul Edge fragments.
On the surface Soul Calibur seems reasonable enough and realistic to a point, but the the lore is fucking insanely fucking Dungeons and Dragons level crazy. I'd run a fucking d20 campaign in that setting because holy fucking Christ it's actually some baller lore with loads of alternate history shenanigan /x/ /pol/ potential.

Inferno is not the endgame, just the manifestation of SoulEdge itself many times in your own head. Night Terror is the supposed ancient evil. And the most dangerous thing is not the giant flying laser shooting indestructable monster but the curse of the evil seed. The you get closer to it, the more fucked up your life will get. Like Killik and Ivy whole life or fucking your life yourself searching for it like Aeon or Yun Seong. It's not even "magic" itself but some kind of divine influence from another plane.
Unless you have true iron will like Taki, you can't manipulate or keep something created with a shard of the sword without getting corrupted yourself driven to madness or turning into a monster.
