I'd imagine something closely similar to the Monster Rancher series. I think at this point, a soft reboot for the Pokemon franchise could do it no harm: The spirit of catching them all is honestly dead & buried: With that, the focus on more individualized playthrough from one player to another comes to my mind. Despite such a strong number of Pokemon to show, the franchise has accomplished nothing with it and everyone who plays the games still carries a pretty similar looking team, despite improvements being made with the lack of HMs, don't you think there lies wasted potential? It's partially disliking the map and partially disliking how the modern ideals are influencing how they treat the game. My game won't allow items in most regulated battles (exceptions being "wonder launcher" battles (from Gen 5) and special rules battles). Death battles are a different matter: Your monsters can be killed permanently, your character is part of the battle and his/her death sends you back to the title screen. Additionally, in "important" death matches, the enemy will either outnumber or have better stats and be about 10 levels higher than you and your team. So will want items for those (revives will also be hella expensive).

Well, the main point of Gyms should be the actual battles. but it would help if there were double, triple, rotation etc. battles instead of almost exclusively singles.

I'm just going to shit out some ideas I have to improve the series as a whole.

Having to juggle between 4 moves to attack, defend, inflict status, and increase or decrease stats is too limiting.

Based on a mons nature and ability, you can have a decent idea on what attacks they will use.

Like Iron fist boosting punching moves for instance.

Instead I belive move's should be pooled together by type, and based on if they are physical/special/status. With different amounts of pp being used for each move.

So in a match you could have a fighting pokemon use karate chop to induce flinching, then machpunch to move first, then brick break to lower stats, drain punch to absorb health, then sky upper cut to finish.

Each pokemon having complete access to their entire move pool at level 100, but still being bound to pp would mix up the formula enough for an incredible amount of mix up's and could stop move spamming.

Plus when catching pokemon you could just use a weaker attack to get them in the red, instead of wasting a slot on false swipe, or frequently switching out your main team.

Pokemon should feel like buddys,

So at least give players the option to train low ev pokemon to boost their stat potential to the fullest so you don't have to spend days breeding a perfect stat egg when your buddy is right their.

And having movetutors teach any compatible egg move for a price would reduce the time spent on breeding.

And yeah, a simpler way to increase them would be good, but it would need an investment to not make breeding entirely worthless

And egg moves definitely shouldn't be easy to get, maybe it should make you have to 'tutor' it yourself by directly having a high level pokemon that knows the move teach it to a compatible pokemon, so you'd still have to work to get an egg move, it would just happen through 'raising' chains instead of breeding chains

Though breeding itself could also use a change, to make it less about just plowing through piles of fodder to get something tournament viable

I've always wanted some kind of hybrid pokemon you could only get through breeding different species, like Phione but not garbage. It's the coolest part of breeding things in real life, so it's weird they would skip that entirely in favor of just some stats

Breeding can still be used for trade fodder, Shiny hunting, and pokedex completion.

It's takes some air out of breeding, but doesn't really remove anything from the game as a whole.

I also hate having to pick between abilities.

Maybe pokemon can have more then one with a learning factor playing a part.

Like why can't a poliwhirl use both damp and water absorb, when damp has such a limited use in negating moves like self destruct and explosion.

Having a pokemon with multiple small abilities or one or two big ones could also affect online and ingame battles.

Because instead of just learning what the type advantages are, your learning a bit about the specific pokemon your fighting.

considering that's a direction GF simply has not tried. There's a great deal more raw mechanical complexity and interactions than in genI/II and I could 100% see them doing a baby's first pokemon game just to try to gear them up for a mainline title that actually utilizes that complexity.

They seem to be making a new casual RPG franchise in "TOWN" too, so there's that.

Phys/special split, crit calculations, how stats worked, new types introduced, new moves that drastically change gameplay and abilities introduced, items introduced, ice types getting nerfed cumulatively every gen, as well as fucking doubles, triples and rotation battles gettting introduced. I mean what do you want, an SRPG? an RTS?

Honestly all GF needs to do to make a decent pokemon game is to just open up the world to exploration more so that it doesn't feel like a guided tour along a safely roped off hiking path.
