Is the living room gaming PC a thing?

I'm considering building one. It will sit under a (new, low-latency) TV. I haven't built a computer in years, though. This is my preliminary list:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mxnwD2

Note that, despite the compatibility note, the Cooler Master website says that that case can accept a 120mm radiator.

holy fucking overkill

>quad core

holy fucking underkill

What do you think I went overkill on?

gpu and cpu, 500gb hdd is stupid, you can get a 2tb for 60 bucks or probably less, hdd's are for mass storage, ssd's are for speed. A huge ssd is kind of a waste unless you have tons of games installed on it, everything else can be accessed fine from an HDD which you need more space on. also speaking from personal experience asrock fucking sucks and their build quality is pure garbage

4TB drives are only $100 these days. Come Black Friday, you might be able to find a 6TB for that price. IF YOU'RE NOT BUYING A BACKUP HARD DRIVE, YOU MAY AS WELL KILL YOURSELF. You need a backup drive, generally 1.5x the size of your working drives (if you want versioned copies). If all you do is game on the thing, do a drive clone once a month. Automatically schedule it if you're too stupid to remember. If you do work on it, you want automatic hourly backups.

Other than that, will a 550W PSU really handle a 1070 as well as everything else?

>>15425572

Would it be more reasonable to have an i5 and a 1060, then?

>>15425594

So I shouldn't have an SSD at all, then? I'm only going to use this thing for games.

>will a 550W PSU really handle a 1070 as well as everything else?

PCPartPicker estimated the wattage at 302W. I thought I'd be on the safe side.

>500gb barracuda hdd

I wasn't sure you were making a joke thread until that point. Good choice in chasis, though.

I play and post from a HTPC. I think I can add a few things to consider. Your build seems a bit overkill for 1080p and a bit underkill for 4K. Always bring forth the resolution you are going for. The case is good and will fit everything fine, espcially with the water cooling as the PSU is above the cpu and there is not much room for a cpu cooler. The main thing believe it or not for HTPC is how you use the keyboard as it can be hard as fuck to play games and be comfy at the same time with keyboard utilizing games. Anyways, here is a build that doesn't support Fem Frequency and the agenda to ban games that offend and will be cheaper too: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6TbdMZ

I'm going for 1080p, since the TV is going to be under 40" and the couch is less than 10 feet away from it. Thanks for the build.

Make sure you collect the 3 games for the gpu as well. Since you are doing 1080p, it will be more than enough. Also, get a SSD for your OS and current games.

Will do. Tell me about your keyboard solution for your HTPC. I was thinking about getting a lapboard, but that seems like it might be awkward to use.

Get yourself a m.2 drive for windows and 1TB for vidya 2tb if you're going for movie and tv rips.

Don't cheap out if you're going to get a m.2 drive like I did. With windows update and my growing shitpost folder I have 20 free GB out of 120 GB. It used to be 40 before the update a few days ago.

I bought a tray stand that raises and lowers, but ended up using it as a laptop stand in another room, but it did work. /tech/ might help you on this better than I can. I've been playing games with only controller support lately, as having pressure on your legs as well as not being able to move around is very uncomfortable after a while, especially after running around all day with work and errands.

Just get a 120gb SSD for the system install use regular HDDs for everything else.

Going to bed now. Be back tomorrow. Here's the current iteration of my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mnQMXP

Hopefully it's not retarded anymore. Thanks for the input, guys.

>>15425723

Got it.

>>15425719

Fair enough. All I have to work with is a couch and a low coffee table, so I think the lapboard might actually be my only option. I'll ask /tech/ about it tomorrow.
