I think it's got a lot to do with pushing narrative about the war and using the propagandized narrative as a soft imperialism bludgeon to have another weapon against whites/America. I remember watching cartoons as a kid in the 90s made in the 40s and 50s that parodied the war. No doubt there was media made while the veterans of it were still alive making light of it.

I guess they think that era's full of nothing but muzzle-loading muskets despite that time period seeing the rise of relatively modern cartridge-based ammunition and semi-automatic weapons. Most of the games seem to be either westerns or steampunk stuff, with the occasional niche strategy game. I guess it might be that most of the wars from that era are pretty obscure unless you really know your European history or are into obscure conflicts the US got involved in.

The Second Opium War and some of the European conflicts would make for a pretty decent game however. Maybe some sort of 1800s themed ARMA game or an RTS of some sort? i guess Lovecraftian horror could also work

But when they get the skills to make said games, they are qualified to do other things. In nearly all cases people who can make games do not make games, because they prefer to do more lucrative careers. Game development doesn't pay, has long hours and it's just awful unending stream of pressure for something that might just not do very well in the end. Fuck that. Only failed programmers and engine monkeys do game development. Once a blue moon you have inspired and passionate programmer that people are willing to support with good money like toady, but I don't know of any other case than him, so of course exception proves the rule.

Bakala's investment was 1/20th of the cost of the game. It was enough to make a prototype they could pitch to other investors.

The investors weren't sure if there was public interest on this sort of project (semi-realistic, historically accurate RPG) and Vavra told him about kickstarter. If a lot of people put their money on it, that would be a demonstration of interest.

AFTER the kickstarter, they finnaly found a publisher and further investments (and didn't have to sell the product to a AAA publisher because the initial kickstarter was sucessfull and secured over 20% of their budget. Accounting sales on their site and the continuation of the project, the whole thing ended up funding 40% of the project.

The above is public knowledge, the speculation that follows is that the private investors matched the value with another 40% of the budjet. Missing 1/5 of the money they planned, they slashed some content, and put it on hold to be made using post-sales money.
