i wasted ~6000 hours of my life for Taiwanese mmorpg, and another ~3000 hours in Japanese mmorpg. loved them because my toaster pc could run them properly, and the user base "used" to be good. decided to quit because i lost all of my friendlist (due their work, mariagge .etc.etc) and tired wandering alone for last ~1000 hours.
now it has been a year since last time i played mmorpgs, never got hooked on another game ever since, they simply, well "shit". or sometimes it's my pc which couldn't afford to run them. now ended running single-player games (pirated them on ovagames, fitgirl, denuvo), some from steam which i regret for buying it, or just wandering from one imageboards to another. it felt so lonely but i guess i could live with this

Not him but the way the game developed coupled with how Wow followed that trend essentially forced almost all MMOs to do the same thing in an effort to capture success that was never going to be there. Investors and publishers saw what happened with WoW and figured they could pull the same numbers if they just did everything that game did. Once you realize that player count doesn't work like that and that people won't flock in the same droves to your shitty game not only because it is probably an exact replica but also because there weren't that many MMO players to begin with, you realize that every parasite with dreams of millions upon millions of dollars is far more delusional than would be healthy in a regular person. It's even worse if a developer has the same idea stuck in their head, whether it be from the beginning or from repeated whispers from publishers telling him how successful his soon to be improved cookie cutter will be. But I guess hindsight and foresight in this case.
Fourteen years. It has been fourteen fucking years and the trend to just copy WoW or be a gook grinder (which I have even more reasons to despise for taking the worst aspects of MMOs and dialing it up to eleven) has finally, FINALLY started to end. Developers are starting to realize they don't need stupidly huge subscription numbers or player counts, or to copy WoW (or at least the bad aspects of it), that they can make a living being niche and small. If we are lucky, we might actually hit a renaissance for the genre soon, but it will take a shit load of decent games trying different things to see what works and for this trend to occur for a while before the damage gets anywhere close to reversed.

Fasntay Isekai is tolkienesque though, or at least loosely inspired by Tolkien's works. You have elves lit. forest people in moon runes. Nipponese orcs are usually pig people though. Which explains the popularity of don't starve's cutesy graphics in Asia. Nipponese dwarves are usually little girls for some reason. But they still have the trifecta of fantasy races that tolkien popularized into fantasy; elves, dorfs and orcs. How can you like tolkien but not like isekai and appreciate the differences in interpretation?

I like when a story throws away precedent and does something that is 'bad' for the story. Like having an overpowered character, yet writing it well enough that it passes the reader's bullshitometer. So I find isekai a really interesting genre for that reason. Also Tolkien's stories are quite wordy and complex to read, and he often describes the environments in great detail but glosses over the character's thoughts and feelings. This isn't a problem so much with light novels which are focused on the characters actions more than the environments. There are a few exceptions that go into great detail with world building etc but they are direct about it at least. I'm talking about the LN's where the author infodumps about things like the world's currency, geography and other mundane details.
A lot of isekai is taking some theme or trope common from tolkien fantasy type stories and running away with it. Or writing what if stories about the exact opposite so I find them really interesting because they come from a different angle. At least I only read stuff that has an interesting premise and I haven't been disappointed many time. No I like the feeling of OPness, most novels always hold back on superpowers because it's spoils the novel in some ways like by overshadowing side characters. But I like that isekai can sometimes pull it off nicely which brings me back to the point about these sorts of novel always subverting my expectations. It's like being pleasantly surprised every time someone pisses in your face.
Besides not all fanfics are horribad, you can find something to criticize in all of them but if you want an example of a story that is a crossover but faithful to both the originals then try 'Hill of Swords' by Gabriel Blessing. It's enjoyable to read also.
I won't say I have good taste but I know what I enjoy and if you get tired of reading stories where the author always backs down or follows the conventional route then a lot of isekai aren't afraid to throw away precedent to do something interesting. Also I like haremshit.

This is the problem with teleport spells, supply and demand becomes spell and command. The economy shifts from a cumsumer focus to being based entirely around highly profitable monster goods. In addition hunting monsters opens up new land for resource exploitation and arable adventures.
Adventurers serve also as a cheap migrant workforce which allows a flexible economy that wouldn't normally be possible with the low food production of pre-industrial agriculture. The high fatality rate also reduces the exponential population growth from a productive society overall raising the average quality of life and giving those who continue to survive a higher slice of the economic pie.
Suggesting that the economies are somehow communistic is quite false. Monster based economies are actually an example of a triumph of free market liberalism. Providing a quality of life and satisfaction far beyond what would normally be possible in a agrarian feudal society.

Archeage had a nice fix economy-wise - most of your in-game trading was focused around hauling trade packs from point A to point B. If you died, it could be picked up. You couldn't use your glider, you walked slower, you couldn't teleport, and your horse would move incredibly slowly. You could raise a donkey that had a slow base speed but wasn't as impacted by trade pack debuff. This meant it was actually feasible to hop onto one of the NPC carriages or airships that went between towns, especially if you were in a pvp zone. That, or going by water - taking a ship left you vulnerable to pirates, but was fast, and let you choose where you were going to land instead of an NPC vehicle always dropping you off at the same spot.
And then they ruined it with p2w.
