Is this a small custom server or something? A friend of mine and I played on Nasomi server a while back, it was kinda fun. Out of curiousity, how many expansion packs were added to this server?

its certainly smaller than nasomi, about half the population, but still well above the 100 mark.

i mean if you ever look at the official list of DSP servers, era comes right after nasomi. there are a few differences between the two servers content-wise, Nasomi only has expansions up to ToaU while era has up to WotG, of course most of it is broken from the main emulator itself, but the era guys seem to be making incredible progress on adding content from classic retail.

era also has a few QoL custom content pieces (like teleporters and shit), while nasomi tries to be as loyal to classic retail as possible, nothing in nasomi is "custom" as far as i know.

I remember that the current official FFXI servers 'supposedly' turned the game into more of the modern MMOs in terms of leveling and quest progression. Playing in Nasomi for a while (A few of the main quests and subquests) made me realize how hard it was for me to adjust to the controls, but it was fun learning how the interface worked. I was used to quests not giving directions because I played on SMT:Imagine for over 9 years, so it was nice to see myself figuring out stuff again. its exactly the same. the UI hasn't changed across servers, its just as menu-heavy as it was on retail.

droprates are the same as retail, except for one or two little things that might have been slightly modified, and yes, most of them are except for a few endgame pieces that are on a mentor shop, not indispensable really. the only thing that changes is the experience rate, which you can reduce with mentor mode.

you can play either 4x or 1x, doesn't really matter either way.

nasomi's client is customized, yes, they're not compatible anymore although at one point in the past they were.

according to people who actually played retail (i didn't) it was the abyssea expansion that killed it.

don't worry about gil, there is plenty of custom content on era that will allow you to get some pocket change and launch yourself into crafting. since the population isn't that high, the AH moves quite slow, but there are certain items that always sell to the high tier snobs in the server, by the time you actually need gear that costs millions, you will probably be capable of making/hunting 80% of it yourself.

You and the other anon are actually both right. The three original mini-expansions were made as FFXIV development was starting, and it was obvious that all of FFXI's resources were being dumped into that instead. Meanwhile, Abyssea was meant to be a last hurrah for FFXI players, the game was intended to die so that everyone would move over to shitty FFXIV. The whole thing backfired, so that's why there's still some life left in it.

tl;dr drastic (but necessary, to an extent) change happened with Abyssea, but it was truly happening as early as the mini-expansions.

So turns out my 32-bit installshield doesn't work at all due to some issue which the only thing I can find online to fix it is "reinstall windows". I was able to force it to work by launching safe-mode and editing the registry to force windows to start the service in safe mode but uh, needless to say I can't vouch for the FFEra auto installer either way since I have to do everything manually.

The retarded pile of shit refuses to run without admin permissions and it checks the compatibility mode for it, so even running it via the admin cmd wasn't good enough and compatibility settings don't exist in safe-mode

The server was going through a few updates past few days and that message is a part of that, feel free to ignore it.

Choose mentor or not first thing, as that determines a lot of the future. Mentor is x1 xp with unique shops, etc. Regular is 4x xp which will get you to 75 really fast.

First levels are pretty easy, go out and fight things, always /check first, try to stay Decent Challenge or lower for the time being. Ask on the shell if you need any assistance.

Your /check will give you the specific level if you have the battlemod plugin enabled, which cleans up a lot of the excess battle clutter in the log. (Recommended)

Protect/shell should last for 30 minutes, are you getting them from a much higher level person? Higher level buffs will wear off low level characters very fast.

Is it hard? As in, you get your shit kicked in so hard by regular mobs you need to find people to play with and strategize, even at lower levels?

I don't like the idea of increased level growth if I'm going to outpace the mobs and never receive satisfaction from playing them. Also, I don't want to be alone going hard mode.

Bunch of people play mentor mode (1x EXP) so you won't be alone with the long grind, and the game has a level sync function so even people who outpace you can group up. Soloing is actually very painful past level 13-ish because the mobs are tuned for parties and will fuck your shit. Early on it's just "have enough bodies and someone who can heal" but later you start needing a tank and supports because buffs/debuffs are actually useful.

Generally mobs in FFXI are balanced toward party vs. one mob. Depending on your job you can solo by going to a camp below your level range, but group xp is almost always superior. Most storyline fights are made with a group in mind.

We have a few people playing 1x xp mode (including myself), and 1x characters can party with 4x characters just fine thanks to level sync. In the earlier levels it's even preferred to have a mentor so they can stay at the same camp for longer than 30 minutes without outpacing it.

I recently played ffxiv again and it's such a solo grind that has you to outpace nearly everything around you to the point where you can't even use half your abilities in the main story quests anymore. It gets pretty fun during dungeons but you don't know anyone because of party finder and there's little if no strategy involved except know your role and rotation.

You can change jobs at any point, and red mage at least will need white mage as a subjob. Try both out.

They play similar roles at endgame, both stand as healers, whm having more healing muscle but rdm having more healing longevity. RDMs enfeebles are more potent than whm ones. WHM can cure things RDM can't (Mostly petrification).

The melee side of RDM is negligible, especially at later levels.

So, the Dark Star instructions don't list Seekers of Adoulin. Should I still install it?

FF XI is kind of obsolete now that you just have XIV which is a very decent game.

here's another thing you could try, reinstall POL alone. when you open the FFXI full installer that you downloaded from the official XI site, it gives you checkboxes for what expansions you want to install, uncheck everything except for POL.

pre-abyssea. the only fully functional expansions are main, rotz, and CoP. ToaU is partially functional as far as the main story and everything else the era guys even managed to make the first few missions of assault work, no salvage yet, and WotG is only "in" in terms of maps and jobs and NMs.

The guide doesn't explain this. The guide actually recommends the opposite.

huuh no? why would they? the exp rings give you a 75% exp boost (or 50% depending on which one you buy) until the 12 hours pass or you exhaust the buffs exp pool.

You can only have one XP buff at a time active, if you have an XP ring on you won't get the buff from the moogle.

You can use !noxp to remove your XP buff manually if you need to.

In terms of magic selection, a RDM75 is more like a WHM60/BLM60

WHM sub will give you some cures, yes, but a cure from level 37 vs. a cure from later game isn't terribly useful. You sub /whm more for useful early level self buffs like stoneskin, blink, reraise, etc.

A RDM on the otherhand actually has higher level cures available, so it can stand as a healer if he has to.

RDM also has spells unique to RDM in 11, including refresh (a regen for MP and one of the more important spells of the game), distract, flurry, etc.

RDM is the king of soloing. They can solo practically any fight in the game if played and geared well.

You cuck monsters from their TP generation by smacking them only with damage from your En spells and putting so many defense buffs on yourself(Blink, Stoneskin, Phalanx, etc.) they can't generate TP by hitting you.

The mobs can't do any of their flashy high damage shit because you won't let them. Throw in a few debuffs like paralyze, dia, and blind with a Ninja subjob for Utsusemi for extra TP cuckery.

Only problem with "Chad En-Thundercock" is how long it takes to kill anything. You're only dealing 20-40 damage per hit with your en-spell enhanced 0 damage melee attack and not generating any TP yourself. So fights last a pretty long time between that and reapplying constantly dropping buffs.

Oh, if you're talking about the bird that's not a warp that's the custom NM of the week npc. The moogle with sunglasses warps you to your home nation. In the 3 starter nations by the outpost warp npc there is an explorer moogle who can warp you to other cities, and you need to be at least level 10 to use that one.

I was in an earlier attempt at the /v/ server and these things really killed my will to continue. Also discovering some of the abyssea content that was not supposed to be in the game actually was and monsters there were level 0, but still dropped all their endgame-mats. We tried to keep the information buried for the good of the server, but somebody who didn't understand what they were dealing with eventually figured it out and the server pretty much died immediately after. I hope that has been fixed too.

Era is a completely different public server. We have a /v/ LS, and the other people on the server are fine just don't go full /pol/ on them. I'm not sure what you mean by SA/TA being broken but it works fine, I've never actually used my 2hr as cor so I have no idea if it works. Abyssea content has never been enabled on era.

On the last server Mithrabutts was hosting, sneak attack and trick attack didn't work. Something about the server having difficulty detecting positioning of actors which sneak attack and trick attack require. Also the abyssea content wasn't supposed to be enabled on Mithrabutts server either, but after exploring a bit myself and some other anons found there were some traces remaining, likely from some darkstar server testing in the version butts was running that he didn't catch. Most of the areas were completely empty, but some of them had a couple monsters in them that would die if you so much as breathed at them, still with their drop tables intact. Stuff that you could normally only get from shit like Sky dropping off a monster that a fresh player could bop within 20 minutes of starting the game. It kinda defeated the whole purpose of the endgame. We tried to get the areas locked down before any damage could be done, but somebody else who wasn't a veteran and didn't really know what he was getting himself into stumbled upon it and started blabbing before butts could find a fix.

I don't really miss the server though. It became very clique dominated where a few NEETs power gamed through most of the content in a weeks time, at least one of them threw an autistic fit and deleted all of his items, taking screenshots of everything, just to spite everyone, and a lot of the casual players were just left in the dust. I briefly tried to keep up with Tonka before realizing that he isn't human and it just wasn't possible and settled for helping out the newbies with their grindan.

My next question:

Is this a /v/ server or just a server that /v/ is on? This is important because I would want to bring some normalfag neckbeard friends aboard but I'm not going to touch it with a 10ft pole if they're just going to get meme'd on the whole time. The less they know about this place and my involvement in it the better.

Had a friend with that exact problem. It turns out to be an issue with a more recent windows update.

You can get around it by adding "–username YourUserName –pass Whateverthefuckyourpasswordis" after the "–server ffera.com" on the <args></args> line in your settings.xml file, same place as your windower.exe. It will let you auto-login and bypass the need to enter your password.

Also the server is kill again.

holy bolts are level 16 woodworking. not hard to get woodworking to 30ish so you have decent chance at HQ them. holy bolts are your friend as rng.

Ranger is just not a good choice to go early. Its constant need for ammunition and expensive gear means you either take up crafting, which in itself is a massive money sink, or buy what you need which is even worse. It's a great class, but you're just not going to get very far with it unless you're already sitting on a mountain of shekels. It's good as a second class just not a first.

As for Ranger subs, most people sub ninja, because everybody subs everything with ninja, or warrior or samurai for even more damage.

They're all good. If you're looking for something simple, most people tend to go warrior or monk for cheap easy mode grindan before they can unlock their advanced class. Warrior is extra good since its a solid sub for a lot of jobs as well. Thief is the king of farming later and has his niche as a sub for a lot of jobs too, just a bit harder to get off the ground and relies on good sized parties to maximize effectiveness. All of the mages are of course fantastic, Redmage might just be a little more rough to start with though compared to white or black mage. White mage does require other people to carry them everywhere though, but everyone appreciates a healslut.

You could do warrior and shoot a crossbow on the side to level up marksmanship. Warrior can use basic bitch ammo which is dirt cheap, and your melee isn't really going to suffer because you're not using exotic ammo like ranger would. That way you'll already have a lot of skillups for when you do decide to run ranger..

You'll hit like a wet noodle. Ranged attacks have an obnoxiously long delay, so you have to make the most out of them. If you're using garbage ammo, you'll be doing garbage damage. It would be a bit like a warrior using NPC vendor trash at high levels. You could do it, but you'll feel gimped and have a hard time finishing things off. The difference between the warrior using shitty ranged and a ranger using shitty ranged is that nobody expects the warrior to be doing anything with that crossbow and he has his fantastic melee damage output to carry him anyways. The ranger doesn't. It relies on ranged weapons to the point of being a one-trick pony. If you can't afford to supplement that trick, you don't really have anything else to fall back on.

Holy bolts are great, but they're still a money sink. If you're crafting them you still either have to grind out the materials, or buy them which is particularly expensive on this server. I wouldn't recommend buying the bolts outright as things tend to be overpriced on such a small server but I admit I haven't looked at holy bolts specifically yet. After you already have at least one class to 75 the price of the ammunition will be trivial, but if ranger is your first you're trying to get to 75 you just don't have the kind of money to be throwing around. You're already cash strapped, you still have to think about gearing yourself, and you don't have another job to clear low level NMs for some of the relevant gear for mid-levels of ranger. Like I've been saying, Ranger is great as a second job and a great job in general, I just really wouldn't recommend jumping right into it to start out with.
