Guys, Disney has already said they have no plans to lobby for another copyright extension. They also occasionally like using things that laps into the public domain, after all. What they plan to to is keep Micky locked up via trademark law.
Hows is this going work? Well, take the example of Dejah Thoris from Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Barsoom' series. The first few books she appears in are in the public domain, and Dynamite comics decided to make a series based on these. However, the ERB estate has trademarks on all of the characters in the books and they felt that depicting Dejah as nude and extremely sexy (how she is in the books) was damaging their trademark since they're trying to cultivate a more PG-13 image for the character.
Dynamite caved in since they didn't want to risk paying for court fees, and made the sexiest thing in the public domain, sadly, more tame since then. Disney will do the exact same thing with the Steamboat cartoon. You'll be able to pass around and share copies of the show, but if you dare try to make anything from it, you can expect to have to have a day in court.
Most people are to chickenshit to risk fighting this kind of thing.

With as control hungry as Nintendo was in the 80's and 90's, I can see it. They got popular to the point where "Nintendo" was just the generic word that ignorant parents used synonymously with "video games".
