It's pretty easy to write 4 lines of code that will be malicious such as switching of keybinds, cause an exponentially growing memory leak and so forth and AV will never detect it. I assume they know how to dedicate a portion of your computer's cpu/gpu for bitcoin mining. Not really. If you download an mp3, you have no idea the history of the file. It could have been that the person with the CD ripped it to wma, then converted it to mp3 to play it on their shitty mp3 player, then they gave it to their friend who wanted a copy, then that friend uploaded it with an image of the cover to youtube, then somebody downloaded an mp3 of the youtube video from one of those shady youtube downloader websites and uploaded that mp3 to mediafire then posted a link in the youtube comments for people to downoad. If you then downloaded that file from the youtube comments, that file has been degraded from the source material (the CD) 4 times - to wma, to mp3, to whatever format the Youtube downloader grabbed from Youtube (since Youtube converts to multiple formats), back to mp3. If you download a flac taken from the source material, you know for sure that there has been no loss from that source material. A first generation lossy encoding from the source material might sound good, or it might sound bad. It depends on the person that did the encoding. Compare to flac, where the person doesn't have to know shit - it's still lossless. (Provided there is enough bit depth, which isn't really a problem, from what I understand.) From there, if you need to use it in a video, or a video game, or just to put it on a device that can't do flac, you can encode it lossily for that one purpose, and only keep the original flac for archival. When the source material is already a lossy download, it's better to keep it in its original format to avoid bloating the file size, unless you're autistic and can't stand having different types of files, but if you're going to do that, then if you decide to upload it somewhere, at least for the love of God tag the file with your source so people don't waste their time downloading a lossless reencode of an mp3 they already have. For the most part, if you know someone that uploads high quality lossy encodes, they'll probably sound identical to a flac, sure, but you won't always be able to find someone like that. Less searching is involved when you just grab a flac each time. Comparing a badly encoded mp3 and a flac of the original CD track, the difference is like night and day. I've downloaded very bad encodes from Limewire, and I've made my own very bad rips of CDs in retrospect, and it really makes a difference. When I buy CDs and rip them now, I do it in flac for convenience. If I want an mp3, I do the conversion in ffmpeg and it still sounds just as good, sure. But if I'm going to download somebody else's rip, if I can find one I want the flac, because that mp3 might be 5+ times degraded low quality shit.

Bandcamp lets you stream the music, and as with just about any stream, you can capture it that way, so it's probably that. Might be a shady web service that compresses it more for even more loss. I know the feel of shitty bitrate mp3s. It's pretty simple to grab the original Bandcamp mp3s yourself through your web browser, and you can use youtube-dl to do it en masse. I do it for music that I haven't saved up money for yet, provided there's not a pirated flac copy out there already.

Rather, they degrade once. The lossless refers to what data loss the file goes through in that one encoding. A lossy encode of an original lossless file has gone through one generation of loss (although the amount of data lost depends on just how bad the encoding was).
