While fucking around trying to make Mass Effect: NMS might have been a reason it was such a mess I think the bigger reason behind it was the lack of a strong vision. Furthermore I also think it was such a catastrophe due to how EA is structured. The environments were top notch and really pretty but they were done by a completely different team than that did the models or the animations. The first three games were made mostly by a singular team with one strong vision. The third game and some DLC to the second were made by the team that made Andromeda and that was when the series stared to turn to shit. The less focused and cohesive the development process is the messier the final product is.
So I do think EA had a big hand in how it turned to shit.
