Admittedly during the height of this games popularity during it's crowdfunding era I bought into the promise of a great fighting game trying to expand it's roster. But in the end the the roster being a let down is the thing that killed this game for me. It's not the size but the variety and individual mechanics.
Being a clone of MvC2 it's to be expected as character specific mechanics seem to be few and far inbetween, whereas in games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue virtually every character has some type of secondary layer to their mechanics that informs how they play differently. Stuff like Sol having clean hits, Jam having cards, Johnny's coins, or Ky and his lightning charges. Skullgirls has characters that have unique things about them but they feel so muted. It still feels like the bulk of the cast are just different flavors of rushdown with no nuance to them. But that makes sense because when you look at MvC2 that's really what the cast boils down to as well.
It sucks because there were some good designs and concepts being thrown around but Lab Zero chose the worst framework to really put them into. I think SG would have been better as a 1v1 fighter with more attention to making individual character stand apart from each other more.

I'd also like to add that Skullgirls did only one thing right, which is, letting people get DLC characters for free for a short while. A very smart decision that actually rewards early adopters, rather than what other businesses have been doing.
But anything else was an utter mess, Cerebella came out OP just because KikeZ wanted to fuck the VA or something like that, the so called "revolutionary training mode to help teach newbies the basics" was horrendously bad and not even complete at launch, tons of content scrapped, they allowed furfags and ecelebs to put their original the characters as part of the crowdfunding tiers (one furry in particular was apparently done for free as a gift to a friend of the artists getting married, which was hilariously found out by the now defunct thebestgamers), memes were amped up to the point it was unbearable and you can't make a game where fighters just go full referential unless you're talking Jojo. It was a huge disappointment and I can confirm it having had the misfortune hehehehe of backing it up when I heard the concept of a drawn-only game. Thankfully Cuphead redeemed the industry as a whole.

The problem was that the game had at least 3 characters the developers knew they needed to add to "complete" skullgirls and the boss who was also unplayable and they didn't make either vote a mandatory choice between those characters. Which left us with 2 characters that really don't push the story forward and 1 whose mechanics were just poorly explained even going into his design. The waifuwars also split the community needlessly and it was the same shit that happened to MNshit and Torment: Tides of Numenara when they were instating their own votes as well. I wish developers had more faith in just making their own decisions and stopped using votes as a way to try and drum up more pledges.
Eliza not getting blood wasn't the end all to me, it was Sekhmet just becoming combo filler as opposed to something more fleshed out. If Sekhmet had a wider moveset and a different limiter she would be perfect as a discount Valkenhayne.

The voted in characters seemed like they brewed some internal shitstorms. Ahad was happy with the first one because tits while Kike Z was experiencing the Rectal Ragnarok, not only did he gave people a "fuck you, we can't do the planned playstyle" but also nerfed her every patch. The second one was arguably rigged because one of them openly said he lost by a handful of votes which was basically signaling for anyone who didn't want any of the other two but you can tell Ahad was assblasted about it, the character's move set is a obvious Frankenstein of ideas that barely mesh and the story is about another character.

Also, assist/tag combos aren't even close to the most important thing that teams are for. Teams are really fucking good specifically because (good) assists are fucking amazing in neutral, let you make something you did safe, or lock the opponent down and force them to deal with a mix up.

The problem with the tutorial was that while it DID teach the basics well, but SG is a fucking wacky marvel game where fundamentals barely mean shit. Yeah, a developer enforced "choice" would be the better way to go. They already had video demos of certain characters with their mechanics at play, they also had concept art for others. No character without either a video demo or move art should have been up for vote. It's clear the devs thought some characters were more compelling to work on than others.
Since they were making each character vote a stretch goal just have a pool of characters in each vote. Pool 1 should have been the 4 they wanted for a completed game and some developer favorites like Isaac. Pool 2 should have been those same 4 they wanted for a completed game, and then a different set of characters they have completed concept art for. Subsequent pools operate on the same idea.
The problem is that Eliza shows that even if they do pick someone that was demoed, they will cock it up by changing the design altogether and burning their resources on other things leading to a character that feels less interesting than the promised design. Beowulf likewise did have some concept art but it was more design than moveset, he never had a clear goal and it shows in the finished product.
