I like the idea of using theater no-names or character actors (ala-star trek) for voice actors. As they tend to know how to emote which is really fucking important.

The solution is to get good voice actors. Doesn't matter where they are from or what their beliefs are. All that matters is that they're excellent at their job and portraying a character's emotions right.

My favorite voice actor is Robin Atkin Downes. Does an excellent job with Kaz, better than even the Jap actor.

Most games however use either overrated hollyjew actors or literally who hacks that can't be arsed with taking their job seriously..

I think the only times english voice acting is superb is in the Dawn of War games. It's just that in general, I feel that japanese styles of acting doesn't clash well with the western language. For example loli characters sounding like they are 40 years old. Western women just don't have the neoteny needed.

I generally find male voice acting more interesting, simply because there's not as many archtypes you can work with for female characters. Female VAs may get easier jobs due to gynocentrism in the industries, but male VAs get to do shit like 40k acting. If I could make a game, I'd do so just for the excuse of going ham like in Dawn of War. We will never get to hear Tony Jay voice as any character in Warhammer and utilize his full range

I liked the voice actors in >>15124195 though for the most part.

Some awkward moments, especially with the otherwise very silent main character, but Elena sounded pretty right. Very good game alltogether, polar opposite of The Shit Story, and both games were part of the same OP Rainfall.

None of the voice actors in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are good. To be honest, neither are the VAs in 1. You just think they’re good because of their accent.

English voice active died after the '00s where the cliques really started banding together and then suddenly you can only hire voice acting from a small pool of overpaid people who are all buddy buddy with eachother.

The reason Japanese VAs are better is because in Japan, VAs are celebrities that make insane amounts of money for their work, meaning shitloads of people want to become VAs, meaning there is high competition between them. Everywhere else, VAs is something paid out of the coffee budget and is often done by actors as a side job

I don't think that there is enough money in dubbing Japanese games into English for them to stand a chance against the nips and their voice acting autism quality wise (in most cases).

I've been wondering about western voice acting in general. Not only for the projects I want to produce but also for localization when I can afford it. Is there a way to get any decent American talent anymore without having to go to the usual California circle jerks?

I was having a conversation with another guy and he said that most voice actors are going to want to record lines on their own time with their own equipment rather than visit a studio. This is not only because of #metoo, but also because it's a huge inconvenience for contract voice actors to move out of their own places unless you're offering a full time job with benefits. And if you're a starting no-name talent you're not landing any job like that without sucking off some Weinstein to get there.

Most voice acting sounds a bit artificial because lines are recorded then mixed and edited in the final product. There's no physical interactions between cast members anymore. And most internet interractions don't happen dur to scheduled being out of sync. So character interactions have to be brute forced via post editing anyway.

The United States is not Japan where you can move office in a day. And I'm just going to have to acknowledge that I'm going to have to voice and act all the characters myself before casting, which leaves very little room for improv and deviation, or have no voice acting at all.

You have to have a larger pool of actors to pull from. All Japanese games and anime are voiced by the same 10 people doing the same 9 voices. You also need voice directors that actually know how to direct. All the directors are localization people who are probably editors at best failed games (((journalists))) at worst. They have no idea how to pull proper performances out of people. That is the best case scenario where most probably don't even know what the tone of the original scenes was.

And to be a director you're expected to learn everything now. Time management, programming, art design, sound design, voice acting, singing, composition. You need to have the vision and knowledge to know how these things work inside out so that post production is as streamlined as possible. Deadlines are incredibly strict with big business.

Also, as a multi-media company working by yourself you're going to have to study foreign languages yourself too. Don't expect to have any connections with anyone if you have MAGA-type political opinions. Also expect your privacy to end. SJW busy bodies will look for one out of context line from your mouth and destroy your career with it.

The only voice actors I like are the TF2 ones, specially Scout.

English voice acting would improve if the voice actors weren't picked by the japanese companies. In the end they get to decide who gets the part in their games or anime and sadly they only pick who is popular. the current popular voice actors are all really shit at acting out a believable character where every take is being read straight off of a script with being louder being a substitute for acting.

back in the 80s up to the late 90's anime and game voice acting was mostly done by people who were originally trying to get into radio broadcasting trying to make a name for themselves. alot of even shit dubs from those times have been miles better then current dubs since the actors were at least trying to make a name for themselves.

This is a game first and foremost. So the mechanics come first. I love the colorful yet critical critiques of games here that no other hivemind website community can offer. Yes there's still a weeb bias, but here weeb games are explained mechanically which soothes my autism's curiosity to know whether or not the game will be fun or not. Even not weeb-games can be looked at critically to determine if they are going to be my cup of tea or not.
