DON'T FORGET TO SUPPORT THE GAMES, BUT DON'T FALL FOR THE NISA BULLSHIT
>Latest News
- The Ao no Kiseki fan translation was leaked. It's higher quality than the Zero leak and minus a typo here and there and the odd awkward line it's pretty good quality. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/
- The PC port of Ys: Memories of Celceta releases on July 25th, 2018.
- The Switch port of Ys VIII released with a litany of bugs, including not even having dual audio (NISA's sole claim to fame) at launch.
- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 51% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill). Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.
- Trails of Cold Steel I & II is now on PC through Steam and GOG with gameplay enhancements and newly voiced lines of dialogue.
- Ys Seven ported to PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Ys: Memories of Celceta ported to PC by XSEED, coming this summer
- Zwei!! and Zwei II are finally released on PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.
- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.
- Trails of Cold Steel 4: The End of Saga to release in the fall of 2018 in Japan.
- XSEED's E3 2018's line-up includes a "PC/PS4/PS4 Pro RPG".

Imagine a game like Diablo, but having full control of your character (instead of giving it orders like "go here" "attack this") and the main thing is to bait enemies into attacking you, then you avoid the attack and hit their backs, which is what you'll want to do always for extra damage and to have 100% accuracy on your attacks. Then you have stats points for leveling up, gear to wear, guardians and multiple items with different benefits. Lastly, the game's map is pure Metroidvania and some key items will let you open new routes to old and new places. The story is pretty light and mysterious, but it's also good. It's the only direct sequel to the original Xanadu game from… 1985? but you don't need to play it.
The Zwei games may look cute but they are full of humor and fun to play. The story in Zwei!! is pretty small but Zwei II has a much better plot with some twists. The main thing about Zwei is the leveling system: you eat food to level up. But the food you get can be saved for later, because if you get back to the town, you can change it for better food that gives you way more experience. So it's a constant fight between eating or not the food. Alsoo both games have a lot of stupid extra shit (like a TV screen to watch what your pet does, or how many steps you've taken in the game) but that's the charming of the games.

Case in point, they've went from mostly negative to mixed on Ys VIII's steam page, and nobody has been able to respond to my request last thread for an email address for Falcom that actually fucking works
Spouting numbers or random speculation is a bigger waste of time than anything. To this day people are still speculating about made Falcom give NISA their contracts when its admitted outright by their President that it was the offer of a French localization that made him give it to NISA (Along with them being friends as well, with NIS's president being especially insistent)
Nothing mentioned about contract bidding amounts, promised arrival times or anything, that's all meaningless without anything to back it up

I asked for the email too last thread and didn't get anything. As for reviews, sadly that's fairly common. Typically products hit with bad reviews early on tend to recover over time. I'm not concerned with Cold Steel's "lack" of sales so much as I am suggesting caution with Ys VIII's "lack" of sales. on PC
They've lived through this shit before, celebrating early leads to NISA recovering. It isn't over until NISA is radioactive worldwide, including France, or gone entirely, before that point they can and will always recover.
>>15125746
>Any game that's popular and been out for a while will get bundled
I'm aware of that. That isn't the point I was making.
What I'm saying is, even going solely by PC numbers, celebration for a NISA flop is too early. There are still dumbshits who will defend NISA on the grounds that
<they fixed it, it's not as bad as on launch
I'm talking about those "sales figures" because, as far as I know, those are the numbers that were leaked from the Steam API which measures ownership, not sales.
Gurumin likely sold close to zero copies on PC because, as I said earlier, everybody who voted for it on Greenlight got a copy for free.
254,152 TitS owners sounds impressive however it is likely that a decent chunk of those owners got it from a bundle The humble monthly bundle specifically, which doesn't show games before it's released which is less money than a full price sale from Steam/GoG/etc going to XSEED/Falcom directly.
Bundles will also generally still be purchased by people who weren't specifically interested in TitS and didn't buy other releases. This is shown somewhat in the steep dropoff in ownership from FC to SC however that obviously that isn't the sole reason in ownership decline
I'm not attacking XSEED or Falcom. I'm merely trying to encourage caution with incomplete data.

Anon NISA isn't going to die. I never thought there was a chance of that. NIS sustains them too much. I can believe, however, that this experience will make them look toxic to Falcom. The biggest thing is the Switch, though. The Switch overnight has basically become the system for casual weebs. Ys 8 will probably at least do decently on it. I wanted to start from the beggining so I started from PC version of the first Ys, and oh boy, is the combat broken.
Who the fuck came up with that system?
I dropped it because of that, but a friend that saw me playing was autistic enough to power trough both it and the second one.
Nowadays he's been playing them all and said the combat gets very good on the later ones, even showed me some bossfight where you actually attack the enemy with an actual attack animation.
I've been meaning to try the series again, but was shoved right in the end of the backlog line.

Isn't JAST USA known for almost exclusively bringing over shit that's already been fan translated?
They even brought over Eiyuu*Senki instead of Eiyuu*Senki Gold when Gold was nearly the exact same game with additional content.
the difference was Eiyuu*Senki had previously been translated by both a professional studio for the ps3/all ages version and a fan patch translated the 18+ content
Not to say every company operates like that but I'm guessing a statistically significant portion probably do take partial/fan patches and "edit" them with "flavor" before reselling it.

No one is going to bring over the beta Zero translation. For starters it's way too messy. I only reccomend it to the desperate, as it at least conveys the meaning most of the time. However it's full of extremely awkward dialogue, like pic related. The Ao leak is cleaner, though still very awkward at times. For instance, Guren and Flame have no idea how to deal with honorifics, so they just literally translate them. So there's a lot of stuff like "Randy bro" or "senior Randy." Think of it as bad 90s subs, pretty much.

Just because you haven't heard about it doesn't mean it hasn't happened and vigilance has never hurt anybody.
The only reason NISA hasn't been able to claim flavor lately is due to how shitty their baseline work was for Ys VIII that everybody is watching them like a hawk.
If it just had been stupid bullshit like replacing honorifics with
>Mr. X, Ma'am, etc
You'd have just put it down to NISA/localizationisms and accepting anything near that is what allows NISA and similar outfits to continue to produce subpar work.
The goal in anything you do should always be imporvement. The current localization industry is allowed to translate a lot of shit poorly because
>well, that's how it's normally translated so it's ok
Like retards continuing to translate ゆり as "lily".
Sure it's technically the correct translation but it has a meaning and use other than "lily" and future releases can improve how you translate the intent and meaning of ゆり based on context.

I didn't say I disliked the system entirely but I'd rather have new titles rather than just "official releases" of older games such as, for example, Clannad at it's full $50 release price ten years later.
There are better ways to support the devs than buying localizations of fan translations Import, buy their newer games, etc. and I don't think a company that touts itself as a localizer should work almost exclusively with other people's translation work unless they end up working with them longterm.
I'd also prefer more than just the one game in a series be translated before they never release again but I presume that is a profitability issue.

I think Falcom has just given up on the west and that is why there still isn't a Cold Steel 3 announcement. I think they got into some kind of dispute with xseed and don't want to deal with them. So they went to NISA since they are pretty much the only other option for a game this size. NiSA was NSA so now they just don't know what the fuck to do. This whole theory is pretty much based on them refusing to give xseed japanese VO for any game. Then they gave it to NiSA for their first one.
5b6dc3 No.15173673
>>15173660
Pretty sure JP VO are negotiated for separately by the localizer. The fact that XSEED wasn't able to and NISA was just says that NISA has a lot more money to burn or will take worse deals.
There also hasn't been an announcement for Cold Steel 3 in China and that is a huge market for Falcom. Do you also think they abandoned China?

When it comes to Japanese VA, it's up to the localizer.
XSeed turns down JP VA because it's expensive. NISA can shell out the money for it. Some anon made a post here a while back lining out how VAs are handled in Japan and how localizers have to jump through legal and monetary hoops to get them. Especially if the game they're localizing does not belong to their parent company.

>He thinks Falcom owns the vo audio
>This is what "no dual audio no buy!" fags actually believe
Falcom does not own the voice over. Seiyuu in Japan have ridiculously lucrative contracts (honestly the kind of shit Burch and co were angling for) to the point where I think seiyuu can be a bit too pampered. Of course, that's all tied up in anime too, so you can't make the video game point of "the VA is a small part of the experience."
It also happens that Cold Steel has a fucking all-star cast in Japan of extremely well known and expensive seiyuu. This is part of the reason why the voice over is so inconsistent, because Falcom aren't exactly drowning in cash themselves. Easier to just have Rean be mute half the time. So it would cost a huge chunk of money to licence that audio (because seiyuu get paid essentially again when it happens), while the non-union English VA get paid peanuts and will record more lines.
NISA has more money, so they can burn it on licencing audio. Also keep in mind Ys 8 has way less audio than Trails.

Aren't Xseed owned by Marvelous which is owned by Kadokawa? Were as NiSA is owned by NiSJ which I've heard are in really rough shape? I don't blame Xseed for not getting the Japanese VO they do in everything else why would they not for Falcom's stuff. However that also made me think oh Falcom must be ones stopping them since they shell out for the VO for everything else. I know Seiyuu get a cut and have a say however I thought the dev also had a say as well.
bcb45b No.15173808

Unlike NISA who have their parent company drip feed them money like a San Francisco trust fund kiddy, Marvelous doesn't give shit to XSeed. It's possible that because XSeed is technically owned by Marvelous things like the Senran VO might be included in deals. They have no such relationship with Falcom, though, and Falcom is way too poor to justify essentially paying for the VO again for porting purposes.

This would not be an issue if they were actually good at being English VAs or had more than two characters.
And, while I am aware it is part of the "culture" in English VA that they are stuck doing those same three fucking archetypes I also feel like they could have at least tried something new every once in a while and taken vocal lessons.
>>15173779
Xseed is called "Marvelous USA, Inc" on paper, so yes they are owned by Marvelous.
However as far as I know Marvelous is not owned by Kadokawa, they were formed by a merger between Marvelous Entertainment and AQ Interactive and I don't think they are a subsidiary of anybody else.
Allegedly, other than the titles Marvelous gives them to localize the other titles they localize are done as any other US company would, that is, they have to make a contract with the dev/publishers who made the title in the first place.
It changes after that because most devs/publishers in JP do not have localization clauses in the contracts so those have to be done separately. That is where the costs get high and I've heard some VA outright refuse to be in releases overseas.

I wonder game contracts with Seiyuu are going to change soon when it comes to video games. Barely anything comes out anymore with no Japanese VO. Even Square and Nintendo are doing it now and they have been really big holdovers. You also have the practice increasing of releasing the Japanese VO as a separate, but free, DLC purchase most likely to limit the amount of royalties needing to be dished out only for people who actually use the feature.

Probably only for JP companies with worldwide branches which is becoming more common anyway
US specific/pozzed companies would bitch about it raising the cost of localization and I suspect even if it didn't localizers would claim it did and it would devalue most English VA even more. because frequently localizers are friends with VAs
Those are both things non-branch localizing companies would prefer to avoid because, for the most part, they want to pump and dump for the most profit and least effort. Them having to have dual audio or be seen as even worse trash would be counter-intuitive to that goal.

I'm playing TiTS sc now, when you say beyond the average gamer do you mean combat wise, or you need to pay attention in order to wrap quests up and stuff?
I accidentally kinda spoiled myself a little bit on the Crossbell games seeing that Estelle and Joshua are in them, but how different are they really?
These first two have really impressed me I gotta say and curious where to go from there. Cold Steel is obvious but if Crossbell is ready to be played and more of a "direct" sequel than Cold Steel and they're translated mostly I'd probably prefer to go there.

I think he means there's a lot of plot and characters to keep track of in your head. The plot certainly gets more complicated the longer it goes, which makes sense due to the way Trails works. The longer it goes on, the more complicated the world gets and the more things you need to keep track of and remember. It's definitely a series that rewards autism.
You can do Zero and Ao after Sky 3rd, but just know those are fan translations and those translations are rough. You are not going to get the polished dialogue of Sky or Cold Steel. You're going to get awkward phrasing, sometimes with typos and other such errors. It's not the worst fan translation I've seen by a long shot, but it's far from the best either. It will get the point across, but you have to take it for granted that the writing will not feel the same.

Not really, it's just that Cold Steel 1 and 2 spoils a few major events in Ao. Personally I didn't really like the high school setting in Cold Steel, but it isn't a deal breaker.
The translations for both Zero and Ao are both serviceable. By the time you are done with Third they are probably finished with the editing for Zero, hopefully.

Not at all. Crossbell was just made first and was intended to be played first. The two stories (well the first two CS games anyway) more or less take place at the same time as the Crossbell games, which is why a lot of people say it doesn't matter which you play first. Both spoil certain broad elements of the other when you play them first, though I'd say parts of the ending of CS2 land more effectively if you play Crossbell before CS.

Nobody will be in a hurry to do CSIII. The game is a high effort low reward. That is the reason why I think NISA won´t pick it up, to make it work they would have to rush the translation and even then they would have to expect good sales by promoting the game. On top of that people interested in the series will be told by fans on the internet to either start with Sky or CS1 discouraging new players.

Depends if you want to play an action RPG (Ys) or a turn-based RPG (Trails). I do not know much about Ys, however, for Trails start with Trails in the Sky. It has three games, called First Chapter, Second Chapter, and The 3rd. The graphics are dated, but the character writing and world-building make up for it. If the graphics are totally unacceptable, you could try Trails of Cold Steel. It works decently enough on its own, while not recommended to do it in this order. The game is a little campy and requires one to be able to handle anime tropes.

If you mean Trails, then release order is ideal: Sky FC -> Sky SC -> Sky 3rd -> Zero no Kiseki (fan translation) -> Ao no Kiseki (fan translation) -> Cold Steel 1 -> Cold Steel 2 -> Pray for a decent localization of CS3 and 4.
>Also, is it viable to make a waifu-only party in the game? are there even parties or am I mistaking it for some other series?
Depends on the game. In FC it will always be Estelle and Joshua and two fixed others depending on the story. In SC you get to pick party members so you can make it happen. In 3rd there are a few specific instances where you can. In Zero you almost always just have the four core members of the SSS, which is two guys and two girls. In Ao….it might be possible? Not for most of the game, though. In CS1 usually you have a fixed party, though there's a few times you get to pick outright. In CS2 the harem party is actually ideal because the girls are busted to shit. Evasion tank Fie, goddess of damage Laura, supreme nuker Emma along with the Rean Bean Delay Machine is the ideal party, with fantastic all-arounder Sara as backup.

Such a party is arts heavy though.

The guy is referring to instances in Trails when a character would just say "Rean…" in original Japanese but in the localizing they'd give them a line.
Honestly it's one of those things that sucks because in Japan saying someone's name like that probably means more than it does here. Case in point: remember at the beginning of CS2 when Rean is reminiscing about all his classmates and it plays a line each of them had said in CS1? In the original Japanese it's just each character saying "Rean…" over and over again. Perhaps to a Japanese person this is meaningful and emotion. To westerners it just sounds fucking weird because that's not something we do when talking. So they changed it to be significant lines each character had said.
This pretty much falls into Tom's localization policy word for word: where the first thing they want preserved is emotional feeling rather than outright accuracy. A basic example of this would be changing a joke so that it's actually funny to English speakers as opposed to incomprehensible.
The most egregious example of this people love to post over and over is the one on the Courageous with Gaius where his "Rean…" transforms into two whole sentences. In my opinion, it should have been changed to a one sentence platitude instead, but sometimes Hatsuu goes overboard.

You could just trade damage with bosses and win because of the retarded number of potions you could carry. You should probably set some rules on this for yourself or something. Also it was the first one to have jumping if I remember right, and you're alone so no retarded AI. 5's environments were interesting, but it changed a lot from 4 and I think they needed some more time to figure it all out.
I've been trying to get through Origins, but I've had a rocky start. I chose Hugo on nightmare to start with, and his controls feel a bit clunky. His basic attack makes it so you can't jump, and that is basically suicide against many of the bosses. His special attack where he throws a lightning bolt is really situational: it's got a weird input, it has a long stationary animation, it has a really short range, its dps is about 1/4 of his basic attack, and the input makes it both hard to aim and delayed. 99% of the time I use it on accident. I find I mostly use the thunder mines. They've got good damage, and they work as really good area denial tools to anyone susceptible to knockback. It really bugs me that you can't detonate a fully charged mine without having the mp to place another one though, and I wish that they were placed closer to the ground to give them a larger effective radius. I've been suffering from a lot of crashes too. I'm stuck at the final boss because every time I kill him the game crashes (it's happened 3 times now). I'm not quite sure how to proceed.

Shit's bugged, Origin tends to crash at complete random for no real reason when reaching the final boss or true final boss. Some PCs won't have this issue, but it's never really been fixed.
Supposedly this solution works, but I have not tried it out for myself

I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong, because I frequently see this brought up in discussions of how "easy" a game is, but this is one of the more retarded gripes I see people use when they say a game is too easy.
If the game is too easy because you can item spam there are two simple solutions
<play the game correctly and don't spam items like a faggot
<play RPGs where they limit everything for you because you're incapable of regulating item use yourself.
The people bitching about the number of items they can carry making a game too easy are probably the same people who ate too many sweets on Halloween and got sick because they couldn't self moderate.

Nigger if they give you the option to (assuming one didn't grind or some shit), using a ton of items should be expected
Self-handicapping shouldn't be considered for a game's difficulty because you're forcing yourself to play by rules the game didn't impose or even suggest (like a ranking or scoring system would)
>self-regulating item use
Is there any real incentive to? Asking because I haven't played Ys yet, but from what it sounds like, you gain items in excess anyways so it seems like there's no point to doing so and if anything heavy item use is encouraged

Are you implying they balanced the game around being able to use nearly limitless amounts items? Because that is even worse game "design" than easy mode for casuals.
>Self-handicapping shouldn't be considered for a game's difficulty because you're forcing yourself to play by rules the game didn't impose or even suggest
I'm pretty sure most games, at their "normal" difficulty, are balanced around only using the abilities of your available character(s) barring obvious things like resurrection before you get a healer and your skill as a player.
I'm sure proper item use is included to an extent in skill but do you actually think a dev sat there and designed a fight thinking shit like
<The player should need to use no fewer than twenty potions and end the fight at full hp under normal conditions
If you're using anywhere near a potential item limit per major fight there are only a few valid reasons that would possibly be needed and none of them are good reasons to believe item spam is a valid strategy.
>Is there any real incentive to? Asking because I haven't played Ys yet, but from what it sounds like, you gain items in excess anyways so it seems like there's no point to doing so and if anything heavy item use is encouraged
There isn't much incentive to not do anything in an unintended fashion in any game other than the knowledge that you aren't using the mass availability of items as a crutch for not learning to play the game properly.
That said giving you the option of using a ton of items isn't really encouraging anything so much as makes it possible.
You could just as easily rationalize overgrinding in RPGs the same way, after all, most of them don't railroad you on how to play, restrict your exp, money, or items, and they don't give you a recommended level for fighting a boss.

Is hard mode in Trails in the Sky FC broken? I have never played a game that is this enjoyable except for the gameplay. Did no one test the balance at all? Why do enemies go from super easy to super hard back to super easy? Why does Tita keep leaving my party with my Haze orbment which for some reason is required to progress after chapter 3? Am I playing the game wrong?

All the higher difficulties do in TitS is slap a stat multiplier on all enemies so they have more HP, higher defenses, higher speed, etc. It turns all enemies into damagesponges (particularly bosses), but it doesn't fix the lacklustre encounter design to have you change your tactics beyond spam debuffs and buffs->spam aoe nukes until all adds are dead->spam single target arts on the boss and only use s-crafts on criticals

Get used to that, a lot of members will do that without warning and without refunding you your orbments (only those who stay away for a longer will return their orbments to your inventory). If you want to keep some orbments safely, stick 'em in Estelle or Joshua.

I know. I even searched for how bad the difficulties are and people on steamforums said that hard is still fairly easy which is true except for certain parts that have pissed me off more than any game in a long time. I'm stoked for SC on normal, wew.

Maybe if the fags grinded, that shit was annoyingly difficult for me
Some areas were tolerable but that usually happened when you started becoming too strong for an area and were on your way out anyways
I tend to complete games at lower levels than most people though, in TitS I sort of tried to rush through the gameplay because the combat was usually not too fun for me
That's also unusual, what percentage of Steamfags even completed it on hard? Cheevos for GoG told me it was something like 8-10% or something

Bump system is garbage. But I'm interesed in hearing why you guys would say otherwise.
Also, in what order do I play, then?
How isn't "release" order the right order? Did they purposefully made the games in a shitty order so that people could only properly play it after they're all released or something?

Stoner friend that was around when I tried and dropped it, he could stomach the shitty combat so he just picked it up and played them both in my PC. I kinda watched it all, that last boss that destroyed floor tiles was fucking insane.
He was the one that actually went on to play the other games in the series in his own place and then told me they had actual combat that was actually pretty fucking good and I should play them. That's why I picked it up from 3.

Unless if you want to take a test of sheer willpower, then play SC on normal and do a self-imposed no exp/orbment grind. If you want to 100% on hard, there will be points where the game feels extremely unfair. Some fights are so bullshit that even after you restructure your entire party and orbment setup to counter that certain enemy, you still need luck to succeed. Luckily the only unfair story battle is at the end of the prologue. All other unbalanced fights are skippable at the cost of Bracer Points.

Not a thing. You probably mean voice acting. PC version is the best version of the game, however the Vita version is slightly edited so some parts of the translation are better. https://mega.nz/#F!WVVkERRJ!zP1AZjSJMZgFsNtHDWt5AQ
