Try Eve: Burst Error, it's pretty good. Unfortunately the translation is one of those crappy 90s VN localizations where they try to turn everything into a joke, but the game is entertaining nonetheless.
Just don't play the windows version, it replaces all the art with "improved" versions that look terrible. I think the only way to play it translated but with the original art is on asenheim.

That said, choose your games carefully. ErectLip is not a game company but a picture book company. Their games don't have choices in any regard but just clicking to see the next thing, and all their games suck except for the first Maou one but that was only because the story got an interesting turn for once and the Maou was bomb.
Turns out that the latest WAFFLE game, the NTR one where you're the fat obsessive otaku who likes a girl but your "best friend" comes in to steal her away (so you NTR him), works with ITH + TA also, which I don't think was possible with the last NTR game where you're a tiny-penis cuck husband whose sexy, adoring wife is getting savagely raped on the regular.
But you have to download the demo and put the demo's starter into the game folder to bypass drm. Pretty funny they have yet to figure out how to stop this.
I like the new game because the story is actually quite decent and the turn of events depending on your choices is pretty good that they made the preg end a bad end is stupid, though. The girl is a cute but she's no where near as break-out gorgeous as the wife in the last game, though you're not a cuck in this one. If anyone looks for it, pro-tip: always choose to reassure the best friend and don't impregnate.

As for non-nukige, Ashen Hawk is looking really nice so far and I'm interested to see what happens to it - if Aksys doesn't crap the bed again. The style and everything about it is incredibly interesting to me.

Did you go for every ending? That's the only way I can figure that to be the case since it's a decent clip all around otherwise. Maybe it's just that you're not used to its slow pacing for a mystery vn (same here).

It took me 6 years, about 4 of which were spent dicking around doing nothing, but yes, I do speak and read Japanese.
The text is a bit difficult to understand at times because the VN is set in 1923, as are some of the now obscure or obsolete kanji and a bit of unusual grammar that it features.
I have to guess what some of the descriptions are trying to convey, but the dialogue is easy enough because it is voice acted.
I just started a new game to check the year and was greeted by a completely different and somewhat unusual beginning. I'll leave that for another time.

I can give the "full" story, basically as much as I managed to piece together.
A team at Spike was working on making a game called DISTRUST, it would be very similar to Danganronpa, but as you said darker and with more horror themes. ~One year before the scheduled release though, a very similar game released called 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, and it was a commercial flop. This caused the dev team to panic, as it was clear DISTRUST would flop as well. The dev team decided they would overhaul several elements of the game to improve its chances of success. The artstyle would be changed to the "psycho-pop" style, complete with pink blood, violence would be toned down, with executions being unrealistic and crazy, rather than something simple like a guillotine. It was also decided that there would be a dating-sim-esque element and more active and engaging trials. These changes led to the game's success.

The story doesn't end there, though. Spike and Chunsoft, merged, and together became Spike Chunsoft. Uchikoshi, the mind behind 999, had been wanting to to turn his series into a trilogy, but the executives were skeptical, as 999 had been a failure. If the salary is good then maybe I'd give it a consideration, but then that isn't the case.
Professional translation takes quite an effort especially in literatures intended for pure entertainment as they're little in demand and harder to translate than technical documents (academic journals, user guides, instructions etc) since one is required to reflect the nuances present in the original text to the target language.

You know I checked out a discussion on France Shoujo on VNDB, wanted to see if you agree with this:

There are literally hundreds of choices, it's not possible without a walkthrough. "Skip unread text" doesn't help very much because it's constantly stopping at new choices or at the single altered line of narration in an old scene because you chose something new. Sometimes the game treats a whole scene as "unread" instead of just the one altered line. It's pretty hard to tell what you've already read.
It's only interesting to read if you have a kanji fetish. There's a little bit of mystery to keep you reading, but I think it gets revealed pretty early.
I think what kills the game is the protagonist. He's the stupidest protagonist I've seen in any game. It's frustrating because most of the game's conflicts wouldn't even happen if he wasn't an idiot. He would forget how to breathe if his sister wasn't there to babysit him.

I've seen that as well and it put me off a bit before I finally picked it up.
I obviously haven't finished reading it yet, but I can try to give some insight.
The feeding and the sex scenes are repetitive as fuck, that one is not even up for discussion and I'm not surprised he's suspicious of the writers using copy-paste for them.
Work is usually interesting because weird things tend to happen during paper shuffling.
Some of the other scenes like when he is walking back home and hears the dogs barking or looking at the red grass and feeling uneasy can come across as dull because they happen so often, but most of the time they're simply there to remind the reader what the protag dreads.
I think mashing space is better than auto skip anyway if he wants to get through an old scene.
I keep a save file for every choice and also write down each one in a notepad.
I'm almost tempted to start adding comments to them for future reference.
It's true that some scenes don't change much, but there are probably parameters the game keeps track of. Like when you have to pick whether to show your puzzles to Maiko or not (firm yes, reluctant yes, no).
The kanij are already a menace to deal with in normal texts, but here the bullshit gets dialed up to 11.
Thankfully, there's furigana for most of the obscure or obsolete ones, otherwise I'd have given up after an hour.
I can't say anything about the mystery being revealed too early as I haven't finished it, but I hope they can keep the fresh and unusual events coming.
As for the last line, I think the protag has so far been the best part of this VN.
For a genuine schizophrenic who has trouble telling what is real and what is a dream or a vision, I'd say he is doing very well.

Always go raw and never, ever use machine translation. It sucks at translating ambiguous sentences, nuances and puns and once you get addicted to using it your comprehension of the language will become warped.

The red grass itself seems to grow whenever it feels like it, although according to the protag it's supposed to appear only once.
His imouto sees it as well, but isn't as nearly affected by it as he is.

I agree. Now Gil can open his gates on command though it has a long cooldown due to being such a powerful move. It covers the whole damn screen in front of you.
