I took the recommendations from the last thread and added a machine translation guide to the OP. Thanks to the anon(s) who helped with that.
Now on the Steam adult games hold. This doesn't only affect adult games for (((some reason))). Adult games haven't been allowed and adult patches for Steam games haven't been allowed since October of 2017. So why are these games being blocked then if they're not even adult games? Shining Song Starnova is a VN SP said was being held. Nekopara Extra, despite coming out in a week, doesn't even have a Steam page which is bizarre for something coming so soon (though this could be do to other factors as they haven't actually come out and said why this is). Meanwhile Newton and the Apple Tree has been held back for nearly 2 months now. I have a feeling something else is going on behind the scenes.

Not sure if it's VN news but Mary Skelter: Nightmares got a PC release by (((Ghostlight))). If you're unfamiliar with them, they are known for having a bad reputation for being lazy and porting NISA games to PC. They kept all the censored content and didn't fix anything so it was still a broken mess. However, people are saying the PC port for this game isn't fucked or censored so far. You can read the reviews on the GoG page.
Either way it's a pretty fun Dungeon RPG/Dungeon Crawler where the gameplay is very momentum based and you balance between a high-risk, high-reward system of using the enemy's blood to enter a super mode and splatter their corpses everywhere, which causes more allies to power up. Killing enemies with their weakness and going overkill is the goal of the game. However, if you are close to entering this super mode and receive too much corruption (usually caused by getting hit or allies dying) then you will enter a berserk mode called Blood Skelter and attack everyone, including allies. Another main feature is how FOEs will hunt you down and are invincible until you destroy the heart/core of the living dungeon. They move in real time too adding to the panic and can easily team wipe you if you get into a random encounter. If you plan on playing on hard, prepare to get your ass kicked many times. Oyayubihime and Kaguyahime are best girls

It is fun. One tip I would give is that having a team that covers many elements will save you a lot of headache. If you don't, you won't be hitting weaknesses and get less blood causing you to not go into your super mode nearly as much as you should.

I have a cautionary case of new western VN.
I know WVN:s should not be touched, but Cthulhu Mythos has great potential to make a good lighthearted comedy visual novel.
The game is "The Miskatonic".

In the first 5 minutes the writer compliments him/herself on writing a funny sentence. All the characters just vomit the same semi-funny "Elder gods world is weird, lewd and funny" dialogue, and to tell them apart is just a quirk, one quirk per char is enough, nothing else is needed. The quality of the writing is the thesaurus of horrible.
Stay away, it's shit. Not the funny kind of bad, the waste of time kind of bad.

Telling a joke is not writing comedy. You basically have to build a world and characters that feel "natural to the audience" in a way that you can then build the jokes on top of that. If you fail the basics, you just shit out jokes that nobody cares about. The audience still laughs, but a second later they don't remember why.
Good comedy in literature is built on good writing. There is no other way.

Well, there's pkgi and the fork pkgj. (the latter adds dlc and ps1 downloads among other goodies).
It basically downloads the game packages straight from Sony servers.
Now, unlike 3DS/Wii U, the Sony .pkgs can be downloaded even with a common browser via http or even wget, but that doesn't mean you can pirate right away since you lack a license file, decryption for the stuff and also a way to load said packages. What pkgi/j does is streamline the process and save you time by doing stuff right on the Vita. This is handy in general, because once Konami announced P.T. was being killed off for example, several people DL'd the .pkg and later on it was successfully datamined for some neat stuff.
On the other hand, 3DS freeshop works because Nintendo trusted client-side instead, so when having full control of the client in question you can just fake that you 'own' a game and DL it. Normally you can't download stuff from the nintendo servers like how it works with Sony packages.

Finally reached the end of Maitetsu. My main complaint remains that the H-scenes are all outside the story, so much content got sidelined like that, then it's up to you to figure out the timing and the order. And it's not fun reading 7 H-scenes back-to-back.
The music was really good, the art was really good. The characters were good, all of them managed to have enough appeal to make me interested in their routes, and the main routes were interesting even on their own. The unlockable routes were kind of a letdown, not only were they short and had huge timeskips, they sometimes gave up on making any sense; the Nagi-Fukami route didn't even bother saying anything about the city's revival. I was hoping the grand route would at least mitigate this somewhat, being the ultimate bonus content locked behind every other route, but it didn't fix much, again had so many things crammed into it with such a short length, and a kind of half-assed harem end. Though I was expecting it to be worse than it was.
Also I thought they'd bring out the princess somewhere along the line as they kept building up to it, but no, not even the grand route had her.

Mangagamer I find to be good, they do decent work and have opened their store to other VNs after the steam purge, actually put some of their catalog on GoG after that fiasco. Have a yearly interest chart so you can see what people what translated and sometimes picks those up. Xseed is Marv's localizing arm in the US and they've done good work with Trails and Akiba's Strip.
Nekoworks is the Nekopara company, they release their games in 3 different languages with moving CGs. Even if it's only catgirls they're VNs are good mechanically with bouncing sprites that breathe. Can headpat every girl on screen.
I wanna say Front Wing but they get translated through Sekai unfortunately. Nisa is garbage as usual. Minato Soft has the Majikoi series, that's of good quality with fan translations. Funny VNs with lots of good characters and vanilla romance.
JAST take forever with their VNs but are doing their own thing and are bringing more titles over.
Type-moon is autism with Fate, it's still a good place to start with VNs however. The translation is of high quality as a dedicated group was created to translate it.
Nitroplus and Steins is pretty good. That actually got published by Spike after getting the publishing rights back from Nisa, so Dang It Ron Paul are technically under their name but still translated by Nisa. Spike have the Fire Pro Wrestling that 8chanmania uses and Zero escape series, an escape VN that's good, at least the first one. Them buying the rights back from Nisa and establishing their own company out in america shows them wanting to bring their games to a wider audience. How good said quality is though remains to be seen. Zanki Zero: Last Beginning I think will be a good measuring stick as to their international releases.
Not sure about Leaf, they don't tend to bring their games out west. White Album has been highly requested by Mangagamer for several years but they haven't picked it up.
Four Leaf studios was the name of the group that created Katawa Shoujo, they've disbanded after creating it I believe but they have released the game into several different languages including Brazilian and Polish.
Key have good VNs, long and emotional with lots of characters. They use to not really care about western markets, usually having to rely on fan translations but Sekai getting Clannad on steam changed that. Harmonia for instance was on of their most recent ones that was released in japanese/english.
Liar-soft don't have many west.but they did go and work on Kindred spirits again after it was sold by Mangagamer, even though it had been out for 3 years in Japan.
That's about it, I'd add Mangagamer, JAST and Xseed where you can get decent VNs. Feel free to add others.

Put them in the back row and make them tank until they can get some real skills. When I played the vita version, those 2 did start off bad because I didn't know what to do with them and their skills are pretty situational at first. I turned Snow into a mimic and Sleepy into an thief. The mimic is fantastic as they get access to some crazy abilities early on that only enemies can use like full screen sleep or paralysis spells and every elemental AOE attack. It definitely carried my team for a while. The thief took some time to properly get going but was pretty useful.

Then I found out that her "route" is just an abrupt bad end that doesn't even count as a real ending, and so my interest died. Is that seriously all there is? A slap in the face telling you she's been dead all this time? I can't bring myself to go through other routes for hours after they bait you into thinking Maia would at least get a proper route. Is there anything else for me in this VN, or will I just be left bitter because she outright tells you that you should have gone for one of the other girls?

I read the trial for it since it's literally like 10 minutes long and I found it intriguing at least. Sort of different from Nitro+'s usual works. I like how the usage of perspective in the pictures. Literally everything is seen from the protag's perspective, as if you're looking through his own eyes as opposed to using fixed angles for CGs, backgrounds, sprites, etc. Not to mention the text being in the middle of the screen instead of the bottom, or full screen like an NVL. Those anons are right about that, and looking back at the Minikui thing, it doesn't really have that flair that Nitro+ had with their other titles like Saya no Uta or Kimi Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi. I had some hope that maybe the story for Minikui was a twisted heartbreaking version of the Ugly Duckling with extra bullying, but the CG set and the demo proves that theory wrong.

Artificial difficulty is a buzzword for a reason people made up to excuse their poor play in Dark Souls. You're right when it just means "unfair" but most games today are not only generous, but easy. A bunch of the people who usually complain about RPGs being grinding machines usually just play terribly but there are times when the game can be bullshit. For example, people just ignore the defend command and constantly complain about being OHKO'd. Some games don't have a defend command but the player would refuse to buff their defense or evasion.

You need a firm grasp of moonrune for this. Figures since it's not just some fun VN it's a Nitro+. That said, I spent 20+ minutes and only then did the game actually start. It's purposely obtuse and confusing while also incorporating player input (the first time you see a face, since the protag is a bullied nerd who only looks at feet and his desk all the time - seriously, that's how most of the VN is going to play out it seems, just swaying images of a desk and feet until actual scenes occur - the player has to click/hit enter like four times since he slowly looks up per click).
It's obviously a horror VN and made to be unnerving with a heavy, oppressive air, but this is ridiculous design. I get that it saves on CGs and tons of work but even if I knew Japanese I wouldn't play a game where half of it is just staring at the floor while other characters talk and/or shove you around. Maybe there's a change later on, I don't know and won't know, but I saw as much as I could.
also no it doesn't hook properly to VNR or otherwise since, despite it showing that it hooked just fine, the translation never shows. The text on the screen is in the dead center with no character names, etc.
Tons of special effects regarding the camera work, zooming in and out, this nifty liquid ripple effect that looks like its gonna get really overused, and of course the internal thoughts being animated Kanji like pic related.

The prologue of most VNs just establish the tone, setting and characters - but here the only two characters introduced really (aside from random bullies who have nice shoes) is the creepy protag who jerks off onto pictures of a cute girl and said cute girl who cries as she jerks him off after he confronts her (with mind reading powers).
That's not establishing much except for tone, two of the cast and some game mechanics. It's more of a tutorial than a prologue.
It took me about three actual minutes to realize I had to keep clicking through a screen with a pitched whining noise and wobbly Japanese terms. The moonrune repeated itself in a loop despite my clicks so I had thought the game was stuck. I can shave off a couple minutes there (my final count was almost 30min).
Then the screen goes black. Then the words become more clear (same phrases it seems, just not wobbly). The pitched noise vanishes too. More black. Keep clicking. Game decides to stop wasting my time and shows me a growing point of light. I don't know Nip but I think this part is either the protag coming to his power or recalling his birth.
Then feet. We stare at our nasty shoes, most of the time at pic related (our desk), and then we are met with other feet who call us a faggot and I think we get shoved. Then we stare at our feet again. Then at a pair of smaller feet belonging to a girl. The emphasis on 120cm is repeated. Finally the screen gets this eerie eye effect which shows on the title screen and we gotta click multiple times to, I suppose, work up the courage to look up.
Screen flashes, more high pitched noise the moment we see her face. Immediately we pin her against the wall and stare at her, reading her thoughts as she grows uncomfortable. Then the protag starts confronting her, yelling at her, and she responds mousey.
Here I'm pretty sure it's the protag making her give him a handy while she sniffles and cries, but it could be her doing it to appease him. Pretty sure he made her do it, though.
After this the OP plays and finally we get to start the story - staring at our socks in our room. Then staring at our desk. Then at the gymnasium floor. Here's where I quit since I don't know enough Nip for this and I also can't be bothered with it. The oppressive atmosphere and unsettling tone of the game is great but floor-face can screw himself. Maybe it changes later on (I don't think so considering the CGs).

I say that a bit sarcastically but I'll give credit to how they use the CGs. It really is great how they manage to suck you into the experience with this perpetual POV. Problem is that at some point you recognize that this is it. This is probably gonna be most of the game. Just…desk, floors and feet.
I don't think it's pretentious (though I don't know what the Japanese says) but I do think it's uniqueness will bite it in its ass because of the routine floor-foot pov. Honestly some Renpy knock-off is better than this choice since at least you get to see what happening.
Mind you, they do utilize this idiotic choice to great effect in establishing the tone and protagonist. It genuinely drives home the oppressive air of the game. Everyone else feels dominant and you have no idea who will do what to you. In your head you imagine that one kid in class who always hung his head and flinched when people bumped into his desk or knocked his chair as they passed him by like he was just wallpaper.
You can imagine the protag as hunching his shoulders, arms locked stiff at his sides and walking around like an ashamed, abused mentally retarded kid.
But again, this creative choice has the cataclysmic drawback of having you sit through staring at essentially nothing for much of the game's runtime. Maybe if it was there in the beginning and changed later it wouldn't be so bad but the CGs say otherwise. Someone else who knows Nip could try it.

Well, I'm playing Minikui Mojika no Ko now and I'm fairly disappointed. The engine is quite amazing with the stuff thats flying around and the staring towards the ground is an interesting concept. But everything else is so…bland. I can't get myself to care about any of the people, I don't even feel bad for the protagonist. I don't see how hes actually bullied that much…its all indicated by the table where people tell him to kill himself but it lacks the actually traumatizing bullying scenes that would justify him going on a revenge spree. But you could definitely reuse the amazing mechanics with the thought reading for another type of game. It is a revenge porn game, but if the revenge just consists of doing them in the ass and seeing them react obviously scared and disgusted to whats happening it is just…not good. It would've been also way better if they used the mechanic of looking down in a way that it is like a choice system. If you dare to look up something happens and if you don't and don't have the courage to face these people the game changes. Sadly it does not do this. More wasted potential. Nevermind. After reaching the bad end it actually came to me that this might be the choice system… its still fucking weird though..when I testwise ignored one of the girls, there was only a few additional scenes and then it went back to the moment where you stare down. Its confusing. I talked with a friend about a game concept where you are like an attorney or detective and have to deduce the truth from the thoughts people have contrary to what they say. This then gets noticed by people and they start deluding you with what you think they think and that way mystery and an interesting case deduction concept could be constructed…Anyways, back to the game. I'm currently after the scene with the 生徒会長 and so far the game didn't really grip me. Which is sad, as the production value is so damn high. Except the twisted stuff this really doesn't feel Nitroplus. On the other hand what fucks me over the most is the goddamn choice system which you 100% need a guide for. There were 2-3 Scenes that made me nauseaus.
I will actually spoil this system for you as ambiguous as I can, because its on cryptic levels like Simons Quest… You have to avoid the first choice (which is looking at miyu 6x) until some random ass windchime resounds. Afterwards you have to sit out some of the choices and save in midst of the game somewhere because there is one choice that links you automatically to the bad end from the point on.

At least the choices that are not important can be repeated infinite times, but really what were they thinking when they made like 10 choices and the 7th or so is the one important one? The MC is the leader of a group that carries on the ritual in secret, mostly as a means of fucking people they want to fuck. The twist of that one is that the MC is a girl and eventually gets raped too
Honestly it wasn't terrible, it was just kind of boring. I didn't finish it because every h-scene was the same shit, girl gets fucked by hordes of faceless guys and very quickly starts to like it because the people of the town have lewdness in the blood, and the plot between the scenes didn't manage to be very interesting. Plus I'm not much into gangbangs.
It's a shame because the VN has nice art and some very cute girls, plus a premise that could be pretty good if executed differently.

SP isn't liked around here for various reasons. For one, despite selling 30+ VNs, they still make Kickstarters for nearly every VN despite selling them for years at that. When they do this it makes it seem like they have no confidence in the product from both a fan and publisher point of view. As an established company at this point, there is no reason for them to do this as they're making fans spend money so they don't have to. It is rumored that they are terrible at managing money and spend too much trying to grab as many IPs as possible. Some studios that have worked with SP have went about their way to go with a different publisher like Frontwing with Moenovel.
As for the kickstarters. SP always delivers late when it comes to physical items. This isn't assuming the VN itself isn't years late too which has happened multiple times before. Vita versions of the VN come up years later to the point many thought it was hopeless and with some VNs, there is simply no Vita version for the EU or US. Fans who paid for it in the kickstarter are told to just import. Their customer service isn't good either as they're well known to treat their customers like trash. To makes matters worse, they also work very slowly. This could be due to bad management or not having the manpower to support all the projects they put under their belt.
Sekai also hurts fan translations. In order to beat the competition, SP buys the IPs for plenty of VNs and tries to make back the money with the kickstarter. Many of these VNs they choose intentionally knowing they have fan translations being worked on them. They let the fans hype up the product before grabbing it themselves and demanding that the fans cease their translation. Every blue moon they'll hire the fan translator to do the job for them like the one for Fruit of Grisaia and Dracu-Riot. These will be the only VNs translated well from SP. Everything else has a very poor translation. It isn't full of memes like NoA or NISA but it's still well known for not being good. Of course, cucking people out of translating the VNs they're working on doesn't help them to translate anything else which hurts the fan translation scene.

Let me tell you something funny. Not only you, but i and many many others in the Visual Novel community kept wondering. And its ironic when someone posted Leddit and their Kickstarter page on their recent ones how "its important to the VISUAL NOVEL INDUSTRY" like if Sekai dies no one will translate or get the games out. But ironically it means they wont ever get the games out or the physicals and i am noticing more people feeling sick and tired of it. Unfortunately though they still get their projects funded and there will be no release dates. Yeah I played through the JP version, the new remake JP version(which had some extra story and scenes changed, which really fucking sucked) and the amaterasu TL(which is fuwanovel). If you want to read CC in English its the best one offered. Honestly I think they did the best they could because Romeo went crazy with the plays on words and such which don't really translate at all. Also scat and a lot of shocking twists and imagery in Euphoria but it's possibly the best dark Clock-Up game to date and the only one with a good(?) true ending of their titles.
Crimson Gray is ten bucks and is more interesting than you'd think despite the cheap budget and price tag.

I think the biggest problem with LNs is that people pick those that seem to have an "intriguing" story only to find out it's some chuuni shite.
Personally, I've been reading the first book of Amagi Brilliant Park (haven't made much progress with it though) and I can tell you that it has been a lot better than the chinese cartoon adaptation so far.
There's more than enough room for it to go to absolute trash, but everything about it so far tells me that the series is a light-hearted comedy and that's all I'm looking for.
I still don't understand why or how SAO is as popular as it is.

I didn't mind Extra, it's pretty decent as far as SoL goes, I just thought Alternative fucked up. The pacing was painfully slow, the plot did some dumb shit and Takeru became unbearable. Plus the tone and focus of the VN were completely different from what I expected. I thought it would be a sci-fi VN about mecha pilots fighting aliens with weird interdimensional shit happening. Instead what I got was a load of teen drama and characters being whiny babies, with the alien plot kind of in the background.
It's a shame because Sumika and Kasumi are both top qts.

Honestly I never finished it. I got to the point where Sumika's brain is put into the artificial body and I got the impression the plot was about to really get going, but by that point I was so burnt out by the crap I'd had to sit though up to then that I didn't give a shit any more. I might go back and finish it at some point because I do like the characters except Takeru. Maybe my opinion of it will change once I've seen all of it.

To start off, after HSST incident fails, why does nothing happen afterwards? The coup arc is supposedly triggered by abusing foreknowledge, so there should have been something there, right? It could have been the start of events where Japanese and Americans start to rattle swords while posturing about going to war. Humanity's future is at stake, after all.
Also, everyone conveniently forgets about nukes. Sure, they can't be used against BETA, but suppose there was a last-ditch effort by an Alternative IV faction to stop the assault on Kashgar. Would threats work? What would work? What would the (((USA))) try? The VN never explores this.
Also, after an american plant engages the traitor faction in the coup arc, why is nothing ever done by Takeru about that afterwards? Hell, he even was informed about the possibility of those plants beforehand, so why didn't he try to talk about this?

Yeah, the webm is a meme cover. To me at least, the original is much better and if you know about sumika then I can assume you got to the point just before the first proper raid on the beta's base. So yeah, you did kinda stop just before shit got really good. Personally i enjoyed all of it kind of including extra but I found it dull but it is kinda needed.
I found all the characters including Takeru pleasant but you were probably expecting more mech fights right? I went into it for the depression It delivered at the end a bit too much, the ending and sumika's fate (what happened to her and what happens) is really depressing I'd really recommend going back and finishing it off because even with the flaws it's on of my favorite stories and it's definitely a worth while read.

Normalfaggots really like the idea of combining isekai with a video game. The entire concept of SAO is literally that, so of course they go towards it in droves. Konosuba pokes fun at the genre, which someone unfamiliar with it in the first place won't be able to appreciate, and shows in a similar veing (which are also shit but not THAT shit) like Danmachi either lack the isekai part or the video game part, and anything else that matches the description isn't mainstream enough for the normalfags to know about.
