Seconded for undub. The English voices are ear-rapingly bad in this game, not that I'd really recommend the English voiceovers for anything, even non-Japanese games.
Beyond that, at least until the tweest, the game isn't any worse than your average JRPG. If you play JRPGs regular I can't see why you would be so put off by just the intro, and if you don't then why are you bothering with Star Ocean.

Nuking the planet was interesting from a story perspective, but bullshit from a gameplay standpoint.
You essentially trade the whole world map's worth of shit that could have been expanded upon with sidequests, to tiny barren-ass energy Nede, where the most that you will do aside from the main story is toot trumpets and beat up angels.
Also it had a tad too many scripted, unwinnable boss fights.

Albel excels at stunning with his infinite strong attack and he's the only one that really and seriously benefits from add-on attacks like the light balls or fire ball enchantments. by the time you get him, if you've been doing the crafting recruitment right you can set him up with a good weapon, and some of the chests in the optional areas of Elicoor contain fairy items you can pound onto a weapon to do that. He's odd but out of the four optional characters he has some of the most practical attack skills and can solo the secret bosses pretty easily if you change up your attack strategy. One of my builds for him was a Laser Weapon with attack decision +3 via Brownie stones, and a light ball effect (which you can get via a fairy pretty early on actually via a chest on Elicoor somewhere, or you can craft a homunculous with a lesser effect, you don't get more until the second secret dungeon) with the rest filled up with ATK/DEF+30%. Set his Berserk skill to on and go to town.
Cliff can pull it off too because of his jabs which is why you use a Laser Weapon, and you can stun the shit out of most anything while having 3 attacks plus 10 light balls per attack proc.
It's pretty fucking hilarious, it's a shame the item creation shit is annoying to deal with.

This was kinda neat, until I got lost 12hrs. in with no amount of backtracking able to resolve that. Also, a bunch A.I. beat me to every patent. There's stuff in this game that's impossible to pull off without severe untold grinding.
There's also a deeply woven romance system based around 60 - 100 seemingly innocuous questions; your ending could easily be determined by what your blood type is.

I'm starting to understand that a lot of big-budget American animation is better in the Japanese dub too. There was a thread a while back posted a webm of the Japanese dub for Wreck-It Ralph, night and day difference compared to the English sounded like it would make the overall movie 200% better.

Star Ocean Til the End of Time was definitely a disappointment mostly because 90% of the game revolved around a single Renaissance-era planet instead of traveling to various planets with various technologies and cultures.
It was the first Star Ocean game I played and it was not the way to set foot into the franchise.

I've only played Integrity and Faithfulness and I enjoyed it.
I liked how the game was about you being a nobody on a backwards planet before Captain Kirk shows up and then you end up involved in a Federation skirmish.
I'd never really paid any attention to the series before but the setting and the "oh it's a sci-fi game" build-up was pretty fun for me.

Holy shit it's amazing how that series just got worse with each new game. At least with know that the reason 5 sucked was because of the low budget but they still could have managed to make something at least ok with it if they cared. But 4 have no excuse and 3 have that retarded plot twist that ruins the entire series and at the same time forced the writers in a corner, which is why they just completely ignore that twist in 4 and 5. I wonder if 6 can still be somehow good…maybe we need a remake of 1 at this point. And I mean a real remake, not those lame ports that are so poor they couldn't even bother to port them to ps3 or ps4.
