Game is on sale right now on steam. This is the second time in all of history that digital copies have been on sale.
Unfortunately the complete package is not available. The best deal is to buy the Trilogy and Eye of the North Expansion. DO NOT BUY GOTY EDITION, it is only the first campaign with some bonus starter items.
Despite being called an MMO by many, the devs describe the game as a CORPG (Cooperative Online Role Playing Game). The game plays very much like a quality single player RPG, the combat and class system is a great draw.
The combat system heavily draws from magic the gathering and plays like it too, albeit in real-time and you choose your hand. Unlike an MMO which many draw comparisons to the level cap is low, in fact reaching the level cap of 20 is very much just the tutorial, you will spend the vast majority of the game at level 20 and this is not "end game" as with MMOs. Your character progression will be collecting new skills to choose from and collecting crafting components to augment your gear to your purposes. Your game progression is just playing through the campaigns.
Each Character picks out 2 professions, each profession has thousands of skills to choose from, you must choose 8 and distribute attributeswhich will augment related skills to build your character and of course mess around with gear to get your character working the way you want.
This game is very much designed to be as the devs say a cooperative online rpg. However they did put in many activities for those who have finished so in a sense an end game exists. End game activities include:
Vanquishing: Every map and mission has a hard mode where monsters go above level 20, more monsters and different AI.
Dungeons: Eye of the North Expansion added in 18 Dungeons with Hard Modes included.
Cooperative Missions: Every campaign includes 10 or so story missions which are longer and harder than your typical quest. These are repeatable, include bonus objectives and hard modes.
Story Books: Related to Cooperative Missions is completing story books. These books represent a campaign, when you do a mission with a book on you it is marked as in the book as completed. When you reach a certain level of completion you can hand them in for rewards (exp, gold, reputation).
Challenge Missions: Unrelated to the story, generally related to faction or pve rewards.
Elite Missions: These are seen as the hardest content and the true end game by many. These are specifically: Sorrow's Furnace, Tomb of the Primeval Kings, The Deep, Urgoz's Warren and Ebony Citadel of Mallyx. Unofficially the following are considered by most to be Elite Missions too: Underworld, Fissure of WoE and The Last Heirophant.
Hall of Monuments: Achievement Whoring and the only reason GW2 players play. Also to blame for all the gold farming since GW2 playes want to just buy their way through the game for some GW2 skins.
PvP and GvG can be done from the get go with PvP characters, so I'm not sure if they can count as "end game".

<Common Questions and Answers
>I Have no friends!
That's what Heroes and Henchmen are for, this is more of an RPG than other online games.
>Which campaign should I start with?
If story is important to you: Prophecies(AKA Core), >Factions>Nighfall>Eye of the North
If gameplay features is important to you: Nightfall>Eye of the North>Factions>Prophecies
If you want to just be at level cap and ascend ASAP: Factions First, then continue with one of the above depending on your preference.
If you only want to PvP and literally nothing else create a PvP character. These start at level cap with some stuff
>But my profession (class) starts out in another campaign.
Play up until you reach the main city, then you can swap/move around. You're generally around level 10+ when this happens. Click on the boat icon on the map when it becomes available or if you're going to Eye of the North click on the Portal on the map.
>What profession should I start with?
Any, with the Hero party system, you can make any character work by customizing your party well enough. In fact mesmer heroes in particular are better than humans since they can interrupt enemies with inhuman reaction times. There are also builds work fine as your secondary profession aka Any/X builds. For example Any/Rt Spirit-spammer, this is any main profession with ritualist secondary, it is a build which just spams stationary spirits to attack/support aka the tower defense build.
>But really what are the best professions?
You really can do all the content as any profession however of course with a highly customizable game like this of course there are better options. Assassin is the fastest but requires attention unless you want to get deleted in hard areas. Dervish is the easier option and one of the tankiest with great melee aoe. Paragon is the laziest, almost guaranteed success but also the slowest option. Elementalist can rain death, Mesmers and Monks are good too but only if you REALLY know what you're doing.

Coz of the sale I decided to create a character for Defender of Ascalon Title for the first time and to play with new players. The title is to reach level cap within the Prophecies campaign starter/tutorial area. I made it a monk so I can grab the special grim cesta found only early on in the Prophecies campaign to make an invincible 55HP monk.

Took a long time since I was going for legendary defender. Waited till level 9 to hand in all the quests coz at that point its hard to gain XP. Now I can do Charr boss farming or the new pre-searing vanguard dailies to go for the title.

But the "second" profession is limited.
I wanted to make an Archer specialized in critical hits (Archer+Assassin), but the critical hits specialization is locked because I didn't chooses Assassin as the first one.
And if you choose Assassin as first and Archer as second, you can't have access to the Marksmanship specialization.

Primary attribute usefulness depends on build. E.g. Ritualist/Necro bombers minions are lower level due to lack of soulreaping but have way more HP.

It'll never be as fun as it was back in the beginning when people actually interacted with eachother, but it makes for a very solid single-player experience all the same because it doesn't feel like a traditional MMO. Heroes just let you have fine grained control over party composition. There's technically nothing you can do with Heroes that you can't also do with a Human party, except in the former case you don't have to bitch at the Wa/Mo for having a shit buiid and dragging everybody down.

I got the original release, a long time ago, I think before I even started high school. The main draw was that it was an mmo that didn't have a subscription fee, which was the main barrier keeping me from playing most of them. GW1 isn't hard to get into these days, just start out in Nightfall, you unlock heroes pretty quickly. After you unlock 3 heroes or so, you'll access Eye of the North where you can quickly unlock another 3 or so heroes, then you can just steam roll everything till end game if thats what you want.
fb2b08 No.15055862
>>15049792
You tank by blocking enemies from getting to your softies, MM necro's classically fill this role, with physical DPS and SS Rits also helping a little. The point is to have more targets for the enemy to fight so they're less likely to go after one of your 8 humans. A classic TotPK's B/P squad had 5 B/P's, 1 MM, 1 MB and 1 Monk, meaning you had 8 players, 5 pets and 20 minions in your party for a total of 33 targets for the enemy to choose from, and the pets and minions would be up front getting prioritised, soaking damage, dealing damage via the minion bomber and 5x barrage spam while also self renewing from the enemies and dead pets creating enough corpses to keep the minion numbers up.
Man GW1 is so much more satisfying to build for than GW2.

Read the comments, they're actually discussing the game's mechanics and a very important one which made me quit ever being a spellcaster in GW1 and GW2 because of how annoying it was. Even the Assassin, Paragon and Dervish suffered from it.
Only spells categorized as "skills" ever truly ignored the aftercast delay and the Warrior was full of these skills, same for the Ranger.

Game's extremely solo-friendly, so unless you fly off the handle at the mere sight of another player in town/outposts (the only thing not instanced), that shouldn't pose an issue.

The game plays and flows like a single player RPG. Everything is soloable by any profession/class. The reason is because this is a party based game and you fill slots with either a choice of henchmen, hero characters or other players. The henchmen are set characters that differ depending on which outpost you're in. Heroes on the other hand are fully customizable characters. You eventually get enough heroes to fill out a full party.

Also, realize that just because you have a second class doesn't mean you're going to do anything with it (SoS ritualist using nothing but ritualist spells and skill pts), whereas (and it makes me kind of laugh) a necromancer ritualist healing build (whereas ritualist can't solo heal very well, better as a "buffer" with spirits etc).
I had a nec/mes pvp build based around soul leech and backfire esque debuffing that was fun.

Guild Wars and GW2 are entirely different games. GW2 is more akin to WoW in being open-world with dungeon instances. It tacks on story instances, and has a weird 'open world quest' set-up. Guild Wars is entirely instanced, into town zones and PvE zones where you take your party, as well as its various forms of PvP; the campaign stories take place in their own special instances. Guild Wars PvP is better in nearly every way - the only thing GW2 has is WvW, but ESO does that better anyways.
To use the example the GW2 devs gave, and twist it on them:
There are Ogres and they are going to attack a village.
>In WoW, you go out and collect 10 Ogre Horns to prove you killed the ogres to stop them from attacking. They just sit and chill.
>GW2 Promised: The ogres will attack. If you don't stop them, there are consequences. They don't sit around - they come to you.
>GW2 in Reality: Every 20 minutes, a gaggle of ogres attacks the village. They don't really cause any problems for the NPCs, and just keep spawning to annoy players.
>Guild Wars: The moment you step into the instance outside of town, wave after wave of ogres keeps coming at you. If you leave the instance without killing their leader, it's fail. If you kill the leader, you can collect your reward.
Some of the quests are honestly pretty sweeping in scope. The Villainy of Galarath was cool enough to get a Hard Mode version made later just so people could experience it again in the same way they did at release. Or other things, like hunting for Rotscale. A lot of the stuff becomes trivial once you git gud, but when you're first starting out (i.e. training for PvP it's cool).

It took me a long time to git gut and to find a good build finish Prophecies campaign with a prophecies character.
Unfortunately I had almost no friends to play with so I played dervish and finished everything solo. I must say I am amazed, the game is awesome, the music is awesome and I regret not playing it before and with friends when the game just started. After finishing all the campaigns and gathering achievements and even doing hard quest in eye of the north or dungeons, can't recall I was hyped for GW2 and happy with my items I'm going to get in GW2.
Unfortunately GW2 is nothing like gw1, it was fun for a few weeks until you hit lvl 80, farm armor, farm fractals and so on. Events were fun from time to time but the campaign and quests are nowhere as fun as GW1.
If I didn't play GW1 I would have never known what a bad game GW2 is.

Rooted casting was in there for PvP. GW1 was originally a PvP game. It was there so you'd have a harder time kiting, so you'd have to pick between running away from the warrior altogether but putting out no damage, or casting and retreating intermittently. Instead of just running away while also casting. All you'd really need then is a bit of speed buff and you'd have a severe balance issue on your hands, which would end up being countered by speed debuffs, and in the end… you could have just fixed it with rooted casting that made for more interesting PvP gameplay anyways.
Was it tedious and pointless in PvE? Sure. But the game was designed around PvP in the first place, that's largely why the game is so good compared to most MMOs that are made for PvE first.
>>15079229
Assassin was always pretty solid frontline damage in a competent player's hands. Same with warrior. They were bad in the hands of bad players; bad assassins run in and die, bad warriors run in and "tank" instead of dealing damage, but because tanking doesn't really apply to GW unless you use some really exploity wall positioning stuff or have an extremely well disciplined team who won't inflict any damage until it's time to spike, said "tank" warriors didn't accomplish anything and the AI would just attack their softer teammates.

Guild Wars is a game where the campaign is a tutorial for introducing you to PvP. There's no gear treadmill, just a vanity treadmill (and some of the regular looks nicer than the elite stuff anyways). Combat is based on group tactics and managing your resources in each combat instead of mobbing up and clicking when your spell is ready to go off. Most of the in-game content is designed as 'end-game' right from the bat, so it's a matter of you getting better at the game, rather than you getting progressively nicer numbers to make up for it.
To give the difference in perspective between GW and other MMOs: When those games released expansions, they'd raise the level cap and gear gap, add some new raids, and put out shit from patch to patch. Guild Wars would put out a new campaign you could start out in, added new mechanics, and often found ways to up the challenge of content without raising the player numbers - just complicating the enemy side. Each campaign works as a stand-alone game, and all of them are PvP.
That said, there's a bit of powercreep in skills, and some are objectively better than others. It's not perfect, nor is it perfectly balanced. But it gives you a lot of room to experiment. Plus the community used to be great. Probably still is, even if it's only a few hundred people at most.

I haven't played this game in years, I probably don't remember my account credentials but one thing I remember before I stopped playing was a quest that you could abandon and repeat to farm exp and money solo called Cantha Courier Crisis.
The way the quest works is you and the enemies get custom stats and skills which makes killing them easier than usual so getting Hard-mode drops is absolutely easier than usual. There are probably better ways for farming money and exp provided you got the right heroes and the right gear but if your a fresh level 20, this is a decent way to start getting money and exp with scrolls. Just make sure you don't actually finish the quest, abandon it and retake it. Along with some incomplete characters, my main was a Warrior/Monk or Warrior/Paragon

Didn't the devs wreck balance and forcibly crystallize the metagame in an ill-advised attempt to drive veterans to GW2? Has that been fixed, or what?
a2e417 No.15118126
>>15118083
Nah, they just stopped working on it barring very rare bugfixes and small tweaks. Most of the final patching was automation, the idea being that they'd keep GW1 running and have all the event stuff and daily bonuses and so on be cycled automatically, and not invest any manpower or time into the game. Since it runs on virtual machines on the GW2 server farms, its usage is directly proportional to how many people are playing it. If only a handful of people still play, then it doesn't tax their resources unduly. If a lot of people are playing it, then it takes more resources, but it also means more interest and probably sales that make up for the resources.
As far as balance goes they basically just got lazy towards the end. Mesmers were given some massive buffs in PvE to turn them from useless to overpowered; Dervishes didn't particularly need buffs but got them anyways and are now on par with Warriors and Assassins but much easier to use. Elementalist got a sort of sidegrade to make it more interesting. Not stronger, but more variety and cool stuff. The devs just never bothered to do much balancing at that stage in the game's lifespan, no final tweaking and fine tuning to get the new profession buffs just right. They just gave them some huge buffs and called it a day.
The updates weren't bad, but if they had taken the time to do a bit of balancing and just tone them down a bit (particularly Mesmer) the game's meta would be substantially better.
A more long term issue is that full hero teams let the building-inclined players do teambuild playtesting much, much more easily than if you have to wrangle a bunch of human players together, so it means that (due to GW's emphasis on synergy and how much stronger a team is than the sum of its parts) game-breakingly powerful team builds pop up fairly quickly even when the meta is being rapidly updated. When the meta is not shifting at all, the game's challenge is gone.
tl;dr they didn't sabotage it, they just stopped working on it

Assassins only dominate in PvP through deadly arts and through 1 specific build. In fact deadly arts was the most powerful and unbeatable attribute of the sin, but for some reason they never gave it a weapon or too much attention.
The sins's primary attribute critical strikes was based on his dagger mastery, and no shits were given towards deadly arts which had absolutely no synergy with the daggers, and daggers sucked dick.

When I went back to it later, I was taken aback at how much simpler it was to do things, even discounting heroes and the like. I certainly wouldn't jump right back into PvP right now, as washed up as I'd be, but GW is a game where I think the ages of 12 and 21 can make a pretty big difference, assuming the same person.

>Daggers are slow as hell with a whooping 1.33 seconds per strike
That is literally the fastest base attack speed in the game, the same as swords, axes, and so on. I don't know how you consider that to be "slow as hell". But something else you're apparently not aware of is that the typical Assassin attack chain for DB spam uses fast attack skills that have 0.5 second strike time. So they are by far the fastest in the game. JS is 0.5s, FF is 0.5s, and while DB is normal speed, it's always a double strike. The assassin also has one of the best IAS in the game, Critical Agility, which provides a sustained 33% bonus without any of the tradeoffs that most IAS carry.
>and they only deal 7-17 damage once unless you luck out on a double strike.
Assassin damage comes primarily from attack skills which deal armour-ignoring damage. The actual dagger damage doesn't really matter. Skill attack damage matters, as well as the fact that you're attacking which triggers MoP.
>making a good protection+healer monk and mesmer
There is literally no such thing in any campaign, ArenaNet did try to do that with some Charr in EotN but they're still not actually effective. Asuran Scan completely negates blindness in any case.

I found the sin to have the longest animation strikes compared to the ranger and warrior which have instantaneous strikes. The derv and paragon are second slowest, with the sin taking the lead in slowest attacker.
But perhaps that's because I played with zero attack speed buffs and mainly with Moebius Strike builds.
Because otherwise Jagged Strike and Fox Fangs are as fast as a normal Warrior and Ranger attack skill, but they deal crap damage. And again, 90% of the skills for warriors and rangers activate and end instantly.
Most of the assassin dual attacks despite dealing 2x62/83.7 damage take too much time UNLESS you have the 25% or 33% attack speed buff. The automatic dual strike can be real good if paired with extra effects per hit. But any dual attack which didn't ignore armor felt like a waste of damage compared to a warrior's attack that deals 120 damage in 1 hit and instantly(which favored him against mesmers and protection monks). Especially hammer spikers, despite the fact hammer users should be slow.
The daggers alone are especially underpowered in damage and speed. That's why Locust's Fury is so useless, even if you were to add a huge amount of debuffs on the enemy that activate on every hit. Perhaps if it was "2.5 strikes" or 3 strikes.
The assassin has 0 defensive capabilities against spellcasters, compared to the other 4 physical professions which have good damage and resistance against anyone. And for some reason the sin has 0 abilities to protect him from blind and cripple.
Still… the sin is amazing at murdering unprotected spellcasters and all 4 physical attackers, even his own professions. But that never happens.
169479 No.15126391

But speaking on an intimate level here's how it felt like playing an assassin. If your attack missed or blocked it would ruin your combo, wasting you energy, even worse when it activated your skill and put it on cooldown.
I'd run back and forth while the spellcasters played "catch the target, retard" I'd switch between trying to kill the healers and the weak targets that would get healed.
Dervs and Warriors would outrun you, kill your allies and not give a fuck about your damage if they had a good heal. Rangers would cripple and micro you.
All your hard work pressuring the monk only to see him heal 300 in 2 seconds. Monks which have blocking skills were a nightmare.
Elementalists and Necros would murder you if they had blocking buffs. Anything that blocked you, you were dead.
Screwing up your chain and wasting all your energy or sacrificing your damage for energy management with skills such as critical eye+critical strike. The criticals were satisfying, but dealt pathetic damage.
The sin has the most output for criticals and most output for keeping up on the offensive, but overall low resistance, but also low penetration against blockers.
The sin's gameplay style is insanely conditional. Most defensive or even offensive skills demanded that you kept attacking your target and landing your hits, most of them demanding critical hits. If you weren't attacking when Shadow Refugee ended you lost the 100hp bonus. If you weren't landing criticals then Critical Defenses ended and Way of Perfection didn't heal you. If you didn't land critical hits then your energy pool was in the low. If you didn't have an opponent to teleport to and if he didn't have more health than you, you couldn't use it/heal, like Death's Charge.
You'd often farm your opponent for energy/heal or something
If you killed an enemy too soon before you completed your 3-4 skill chain you'd waste something. If you didn't kill an enemy with the last skill then you wasted something.

Into Critical Strikes/Dagger Mastery/Shadow Arts(the defense skills). Where did all the numerous 8 slots for condition removal, hexes and buffs go? into the retarded energy management and attack skills, of course.
How did your energy management work? via critical hits. Compare the retarded Sin to the Ranger's passive EM which makes each skill cost less energy and the warrior's energy cost replaced by adrenaline.
Most Sin skills are based on active action via not failing, but with minimal rewards. Instead of getting a nice message like the Warrior where you don't have the adrenaline/conditions met, the assassin attack skills let you go ahead and waste your skills, saying "fail" making you waste energy.
Playing with the assassin was a cruel bitch. The retarded 3x chain: lead, off-hand, third attack wasn't the only overly conditioned mechanic, it infected the skills as well. You couldn't do jackshit unless a condition was met, namely hitting an opponent successfully. That's why the sin is so awful at recuperating when out of combat and the "hit and run" tactic doesn't exist, but it does exist for the other professions against the assassin.
That's why I'd rather shove a coal up my ass than pretend that playing the assassin is a healthy thing and I'd love to shove my dick down everyone's ass who says the assassin is overpowered. He's overpowered at the cost of my fucking sanity.
An assassin cannot effectively heal itself unless it has an easy-to-hit, high-health dummy to leech off of. An assassin can be left with a weak, but long-lasting hex or condition and can easily die if left alone. It can die if it cannot hit something. A derv laughs its ass off at this, same for the ranger that can easily remove conditions. A sin does not have many passive abilities.

It's been years since I've played through it, but are you sure you had to fight them? Mobs move around, so you just need to be careful and wait for them to move, or cling to the edge, etc. I don't remember having to fight them pre-infusion, and I'm fairly sure there was a route to avoid them. It's not the biggest issue, since they're fairly squishy, but it's definitely not the most fun thing in the world.

Their are a few groups you can avoid but they are everywhere and some just move up and down corridors. There is even two Musaat/jade armor bosses you have to fight to open doors to progress. You basically have to tank/out heal the damage, or do what I did and get your HP over 700 with Endure Pain.
I'm a massive lorefag so I do story shit in order, no matter the game genre or consequences of difficulty.
Added note, the AI is fucking dumb as shit, Cynn still tries to use fire on Titans, but they're miles better than what I remember.

It's not that bad, shit has a 15 second cooldown. You can get away with just losing a party member and resurrecting them every time it pops, especially when there's only two enemies doing it.

The mission is definitely easier now. All of the "defend x" missions where you have to hold out and defeat attackers quickly to avoid being overwhelmed by multiple groups have been nerfed, because these situations tend to be the achilles heel of low-skill players.

Heroes can use any skill you've unlocked across your entire account. You can buy skills for yourself to unlock them (e.g. go /mo temporarily and get skills for your monks), unlock them on other PvE characters, or unlock them through the PvP points system.
In particular if there's an elite you want it's a lot easier to get 3k PvP points than it is to go through a whole campaign and pay for an expensive capture signet.

In contrast to what >>15131046 said, hunting for elite skills is part of the fun of the game. Especially going out to the boonies, like the area with those faggot Imps that drop the the IDS and like 12 bosses running around with Elites. You can easily get a full skill bar of 8 elite skills in the Shiverpeaks if you just want to meme a bit.

They are purely cosmetic so there is no downside at all besides usually looking kind of shit due to being mismatched (though there are exceptions ie Warrior Elite Gladiator on torso and gloves paired with Elite Kurzick on legs and boots, looks great) and due to generally colouring slightly differently even if the styles are compatible.
There is, strictly speaking, no actual penalty for having different rated armour either, it'll just affect hits to that particular body part. Not sure how spell damage is handled off the top of my head.

The world of GW, while beautiful, was a major tease due to engine limitations. The engine was so weak your avatar couldn't interact with the stairs and very similar to Dark Souls you couldn't make a 2 foot jump onto the next area. The problem was that in DS you're allowed to at least fall and sometimes be rewarded for it. In GW1 you cannot even fall. It made you feel like a ghost in a painting. Everything felt superficial, you couldn't interact with anything, let alone be rewarded. No secret rooms, no bonus areas, nothing. GW utterly failed at exploration, the aspect most RPGs dominated in, even WoW had GW beat. Even in EOTN the attempt at interesting landmarks(Bottomless Pit) had nothing tangible to offer. Compared to say Dungeon Siege 1 where there was the "Pit of Despair" which lead to 3 labyrinths with zero visibility. Dungeon Siege 1's Untraen multiplayer map was far more immersive than its singleplayer counterpath.
The PvE for GW always felt like a second thought compared to the PvP. The story in GW is what story is to the writers of Kingdom Hearts and Wakfu: nobody gives a fuck if it's consistent. Probably the most piss poor storylines and writing decisions came from GW writers in the form of arrogant ignorant gary stu/mary sue NPC allies that stole all the credits. Compared to the PvP aspect where the players are literal god's champions competing for godhood and owning the rights to the realm of the gods. In the singleplayer the players are dumb tools being used by kings, princes, gold aliens and then black aliens(the Mursaat and Seer, respectively).
