This video shows how to enter The Secret Aquarium using 0 A presses. This is TAS.
This video is an improvement from the previous video, in which this was done using 0 A presses, but using a virtual console-only method (https://youtu.be/ujLjEbCykOQ). Since then, we found a new 0x method that’s compatible with the N64 console, and so this method is superior.
Backstory: Tyler Kehne had long theorized that there may be a way to enter SA 0x, but wasn’t able to flesh out a working implementation. It wasn’t until recently that he made several relevant discoveries that together made this strat possible. Specifically, he figured out how to:
- build up speed 0x in BoB so that we could reach BitDW (https://youtu.be/58rxoSSshw4)
- reach the misalignment 0x in BitDW (not necessary for the strat, but a nice time save) (https://youtu.be/U4vcFxz0F3g)
- build up speed 0x in SSL (https://youtu.be/huThIB5Uc6A)
- conserve speed out of SSL 0x using a shell clone, a fire clone, and a fly guy (https://youtu.be/svuSVSUsi74)
- maneuver around the castle foyer to reach the SA entrance (https://youtu.be/91lJ6eUeyWU)
- do a glitchy ledge grab onto the SA entrance (https://youtu.be/XIgildKWprM)
Given all of this, what was left for me to do was to figure out how to get the shell clone in SSL (https://youtu.be/xL9HV6XyDBo), figure out how to get/release the fire clone in SSL, figure out how to move the fly guy into place, and finally put everything together.
The strat shown in this video consists of several sub-strats, some of which may seem pointless and unrelated to the main goal of entering SA 0x. Nevertheless, each of these sub-strats had a specific and necessary purpose. The main crux of this strat was finding a 0x way to build up speed and conserve it into the castle without having collected any stars. This was necessary because we needed to have the PSS door give us the text that we don’t have the required 1 star to open it, as this text is necessary for redirecting our speed towards the SA entrance. Anyway, here’s a breakdown of what’s going on in the video: First, I entered BoB and set the HOLP so that it could later be used in SSL to remotely throw a bob-omb into the shell block. Then I used the C^ trick to build up speed, conserved it into the castle foyer, and used it to get past the BitDW door without the 8 required stars. Then I made my way through BitDW and defeated Bowser, making sure to use pause-buffered hitstun during the grab so as to not update the HOLP. Having gotten the key, I then made my way into the basement and entered SSL. Then I used pause-buffered hitstun to remotely throw a bob-omb into the shell block, cloned the shell, and released the shell clone in the far off corner. Then I lured a fly guy away from his home so that he’d perpetually shoot fire. Then by using a pokey hitbox to sustain pause-buffered hitstun, I grabbed a fake bob-omb, cloned one of the fly guy’s fires, walked with it to a sufficiently high point, and then remotely released the fire clone into the far off corner. Then I used fly guy manipulation to laterally transport a separate fly guy to the far off corner. Then I used hyper speed punching to build up 45k speed over the course of 40 minutes. From there, I used a crouch slide to move into the fire clone, got burned by it (which prevented the crouch slide from capping my speed to 100), fell down while in a burned state (which prevented bonking), landed on the shell clone, pressed Z to cancel the shell and trigger the 10k glitch, used the 10k glitch to adjust my speed from 45k to 2300, moved forward into a bonk above the fly guy, and then bounced on the fly guy to initiate a twirl (which ended the bonk prematurely, before it zeroed my speed). During the twirl, I adjusted my speed and angle, exited out of the course when I landed, and conserved my speed into the castle foyer. From there, I maneuvered around the castle foyer, navigated up the room using successively higher platforms, triggered the text on the PSS door, redirected my remaining speed towards the SA entrance, did a glitchy ledge grab onto the SA entrance, and then entered SA.

Pic related is a great example: Arbitary code execution is interesting as a means to beat the game, but even better when you can make it read out Twitch chat through IRC data inputted through the controller ports.
Another example: Sure, you can use a TAS to master Brain Age, but it's more amusing to solve the answers by tricking the character recognition into thinking a little illustration is a number or letter. (Unfortunately though, it was mostly used to draw shitty memes.) That NES Family Feud game TAS did something similar but with amusing combinations of words used to trick the interpreter into correctly answering the question.

For example, the Japanese version has a lot of bugs, but in addition to the floating point error the VC version (and most emulated versions) don't crash when you go to a parallel universes without locking the camera, which is why for 100% they had to find a new way into the Secret Aquarium. If a ton of new useful glitches were discovered in the VC version, I imagine it would become the new best option. Ideally a method would work on all versions, but unfortunately we don't live in that world.

It could be poorly programmed considering making games in 3D was still very new at the time, but consider that most glitches he uses aren't going to be found playing the game normally. Hell, he does everything tool-assisted because it's damn near impossible for a human to pull off most of the glitches he uses due to requiring frame-perfect inputs or knowing what certain values in memory are before doing certain actions. If a full 0xA run is ever done on console, it will be done by a TAS bot, not a human.
This isn't the same as a game like Pokemon Red/Blue where people found serious glitches from a normal playthrough like MissingNo (or its variations), or that one trainer in Pokemon mansion who can potentially trap you in a corner.

Walls in DK64 are more of a suggestion than anything else. It's incredibly easy to clip out of bounds. With the right (and very easy) setup, you can walk through them, swim through them, maintain swimming after clipping through and swim through the air, use swimming in the air to clip into more things, etc.
Proabaly has something to do with the way the game hides its horrendous lag. Whenever the game's FPS drops, everything accelerates to compensate and make it less obvious. A lot of out of bounds tricks are made easier by spamming orange grenades to cause a bunch of lag first.

While a lot of games planned for the DD had a lot of content cut, SM64 isn't actually that unique. Basically every other game planned for the DD had a similar amount of cut content, and some like Earthbound (embed related) were never even released. SM64's glitches aren't crazy either. You'd encounter almost none of them in normal gameplay, and the ones that are there aren't unreasonable coding wise.
