I'll just ignore the idiotic doomsaying and say that while the advice is not bad in and of itself I wouldn't even go as far as throwing someone a non systemdick distro but instead hand them any of the larger desktop focused distros.
You are going to make mistakes anyway, install ugly or useless shit, fuck up the way you handle your space and home folder and generally goof around.
This will help you get comfy with linux in general but also makes a bit of a mess.
Then after a couple months you should have a more solid idea of what you want and don't want and take a look around what other places offer, be that be some distro with musl instead of glibc or openrc instead of systemd.
Speaking of which, a good way to tell when you might want to switch away from systemd is the exact moment it starts to hinder and annoy you and by that I don't mean reading some horror stories but actually having to wrestle with that tard of a system because that shows that you actually need that level of control and aren't just spouting memes.
>I can just read up on all this shit before hand and dive into it fully prepared
Maybe and good on you if so but from my experience people either accept that they have to get used to the general system and try out a popular distro in the beginning or just give up at some point in the tty after something breaks.
Trying to set up wine bottles as btrfs subvolumes right now in order to save space via dedublication.
Turns out that that is not a function that works accross two different mountpoints, so I opted to mount the top volume as well for such operations to work. This should also come in handy when trying to modify files that need to keep existing in some original form e.g: fixing tagging on torrented music.

You can play a lot of games in WINE if that counts for anything. A lot of work has been getting done on it lately and even modern titles are running really well now. You can totally play relevant games and a lot of Steam games actually work on Linux, too, so a good bunch of games can just run natively without WINE anyways. It's pretty good but honestly it's not too much of a bad thing to have a separate Windows install to run some things if you really wanna play them.

Still, just because a small portion of my software is proprietary or harmful doesn't mean I should myself back from making the rest of my system less harmful.
Yeah, I agree Steam sucks. I've been using GOG lately instead, Steam is mostly there for redownloading old purchases and the odd game which doesn't have its Linux port on GOG for some retarded reason.

What are you trying to run? You can't have a refresh rate of zero so it must be fucked up. Even then, it's unlikely that your GPU and monitor actually support 320x240 in the current year. Would it run in a virtual machine? There's usually an option to stretch the video. You could also try using virtual desktop with a screen magnifier.

Dude, open source is not the same as free software.
Let me put it this way. Unreal Engine 4 is open source, but not free software. That's because you have access to its source, but if you sell your game and you surpass a certain quota, you HAVE to pay Epic royalties, it's stipulated in the license. That means you're not free to redistribute the program, which is one of the 4 fundamental freedoms that free software has.
If you feel beginners will get confused, just include those 4 freedoms, because that's what free software is.

>open source is not the same as free software
I never said it was. I also know the difference between 'freeware' and 'free software'. That's why I chose the label 'freeware' instead of 'free' for games that cost nothing. The games in both categories are open source, and some of them are 'free software' (most are, I think). I noted that, THEN I split them up by price so people know if they need to put down money for said code to do anything. 'User freedom' never entered the equation. It was about showing good open source games, some of which don't need to be paid for.
I could include a whole spiel about software freedoms and the difference between 'open source', 'free', and 'gratis' software that takes up half the image. Alternatively, I could use as few words as possible to get my point across in a way that a layperson could understand ("The source code is available, with the implication being that it's continually improved. Here's whether or not you still need to pay for the game itself"). It's not my fault the FSF were a bunch of retards who thought there was no possible way 'free' could muddy the waters and bring discussions to a screeching halt for decades.
If someone sticks with Linux long enough, they'll learn about that shit eventually. My guide won't confuse them any more or less, but teaching them about that isn't my goal anyway. My goal is to show Linux as a viable gaming platform, which it has been since I stopped using Windows half a decade ago. The only reason you take issue with the wording is because you're already mired in the jargon and you're looking at it through that lens. Try looking at it from the viewpoint of someone who either doesn't know at all or doesn't give a shit to know. THAT is the kind of person I'm targeting.
