ad02e6 No.14960978

For me it has to be Age of Empires III: The War Chiefs expansion. I use to main Portuguese. For those who don't know, Portuguese was ranked bottom 3 civilisations since release (2005) until I stopped playing (2007). Anywho the expansion came out 2006 and I formented an unbeatable strategy of a fast revolution with the Portuguese which is essentially a turtle then a win button. I climbed to about 2200 ELO off 200 games in Ensemble Studios Online.

It will always be my favourite, I really created/carved a niche of my own. I was in my opinion top 2 Portuguese players in the world. The hardest counter was a spain all in age 2 rush, in which case you had to stack a slightly modified deck that can still pull the trigger on the FR (should they bluff and boom/fast age 3/4) but can handle xbows and muskets from age 2 with a slightly modified economy and still take you through to a game finishing position (3/4s of the time in age 3, 50-50 after that whether you lost in age 2 or pushed it to a win in age 4). It was really hard to beat.. even vs the direct counter, as Portuguese scout has the unique ability of spyglass, making scouting extremely hard to dodge from an opponents point of view, they can't (if you are skilled enough) hide their strategy from you. This in combination with heavily weighted micro skills makes the game extremely favourable to your corner. Which again Portuguese are most favourable for, showcasing the venerable Cassador (purest glass cannon in game) and Dragoons (most powerful ranged cavalry, particularly with Home City upgrades).

I've also hit International Grandmaster in AoE2, but its been dead since 2013-2014.

AoEO was also super fun before they removed gear from rank, allowing for some of the most unique and diverse strategies in the genre of RTS [ Real Time Strategy ]. But AoE III: TWC will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only my favourite Age title (also my favourite series), but my favourite game overall. (decay killed the game)

I'm glad to see nu/v/ talking about videogames and not falling for ruses, as usual. To answer the OP; the second game. AoE 1 has aged like milk and the only reason you'd play it is for the campaigns. AoE 3 doesn't play by the previous two games' rules and philosophy. This is understandable since they can only milk the formula for so much, but it doesn't feel like a AoE game when there is little melee and fucked up resource gathering. Good campaign tho.

AoE 2 is the best. It's the standard, that's how good it is. If you wonder which one to get, get the old one with the expansions. Don't get the HD as it changes the balance too much and suffers from bloat, both technical and gameplay. Good campaigns, again.

I'm surprised to see someone who actually enjoyed AoE3. Overall skill ceiling was much lower than AoE2 and it wasn't even balanced that well. Wasn't the Portugeuse Spyglass an ability to see anywhere on the map for free, whenever you wanted? How would an opponent even hide their buildings from you? Wouldn't it just come down to luck?

I don't want to doubt your story but wtf is International Grandmaster for AoE2? Voobly uses an ELO system, it's not SC2, I've never heard anyone call themselves a grandmaster or be a term used in the community. If it's something from the gameRanger days then I apologize.

Saying AoE2 is dead is just patently false, it's been alive better than ever, exponentially better than during its peak when servers were still hosted by MSN Live. Pics related.

>Don't get the HD as it changes the balance too much and suffers from bloat, both technical and gameplay

As opposed to the the Conquerors, where you spam Huns and Aztecs/Mayans 24/7? New expansions mellow out the game even more and actually tries to add civs that play differently from everyone else. Sure, HD has its issues but Voobly has their version of the mod without a fucked up version of the game. Voobly is also free so you don't even need to download Steam or buy AoE2HD.

2400 ELO on official servers

in 2013 pre xpac everyone who had a high skill was actually playing all at once in one location so it was harder, you wont find those statistics in an average

aoe3 had a far higher skill cap then any other age game, aom came close though, and aoeo with gear. night and day requirement on micro tactics and strategy compared to 1 and even 2

I'd certainly say AoE is still the best but I did enjoy 3 quite a lot after the expansions. First expansion I mostly used Iroquois for their ability to make nearly indestructible walls if your villagers are chanting, second expansion I mostly used Chinese because of the 220 pop cap and the efficiency of making banner armies. Good times.

Apart from the MMO shit I actually enjoyed it, cartoony art style improved readability, the game had lots of replayability, no campaign was shit, but the campaign in 3 was so bad I didn't mind that much.

Still want them to go through the series and lift a little bit from each one to make the perfect AoE game.

I've never enjoyed competitive RTS play, I've either fucked around in the map editor and setting up fun maps against the CPU, the campaign or casually fucking around with friends.

Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology were my favourites by far.

Both 1 and 3 are just downgrades of the above.

>tfw no basebuilding WW2 RTS

I got into pcgayming late, around 2010, AOE3 was my first RTS I loved it. Only played AoE2 a year ago and I can't get into it, it's incredibly slow, I'm a pleb.

8525f8 No.15002769

AoE2 is technically the best game of the series. But AoE 1 will always be my favorite due to its setting. Ancient times is more appealing than middle ages for me.

But yeah, AoE1 has lots of issues ranging from technical limitations (mostly the fucked up AI pathfinding that even unofficial patches and the Definitive Edition re-release hasn't fixed).

Unit balance is ridiculous, RM is mostly archer dominated (by archer I mean chariot archer in early Bronze age) and DM is mostly centurion+siege warfare with some exceptions (e.g. Legions or Elephants if your civilization has a unit bonus for them). If you do survive early rushes and everyone runs out of gold, the civ with chariot bonus wins.

Cavalry becomes useless beginning at late bronze age and Cataphract was a ridiculous expensive unit upgrade that barely changed its stats from Heavy Cavalry, even after the unit was rebalanced in Upatch/DE it still is a debatable unit.

Civilizations were also balanced around these two game modes and Hittites were ridiculously overpowered before uPatch/DE, they had almost every unit of the game available.

My opinions about AoE3 are very limited, I haven't played multiplayer but even singleplayer is not very appealing for me. They pretty much wasted one of the most interesting eras of human history (colonization, napoleonic wars, american independence, american civil war) choosing to ignore all these events but instead make a campaign about a fictitious secret society. Even the expansion campaigns haven't changed much about it. Technically, the inclusion of Home City feature is very interesting. It's like in AoE2 each civ have different bonuses that you can choose before you play, so you had to be careful about which features you had to sacrifice considering your enemies/map type.
