Melee is a dance of dodging at the right times but sweet baby jesus do I not understand the bow in this game.

Why does it only start landing hits when the enemy is almost in melee range that is against the concept of ranged weapons.

While wielding a bow any melee will fuck you up. You can't shoot inbetween dodges because of how slow the animation is which gives the enemy free hits on you.

So it's a weapon that's shit at ranged and terrible at melee, how did they intend this to be used effectively? Am I doing it wrong?

i think you have a % chance to hit based on distance and bow skill (and maybe dex but not sure), not a crit chance like the melee weapons skills

When guys come in melee range you have to get out your sword and finish them off since they are already damaged from your shots

I never did a bow play-trough though, once I got as far as the 1st trip to the valley of mines after beating jharkendar

Bow and crossbow are auto lock-on. Thing is, their mechanic is that they calculate % to hit even if the arrow/bolt hits the enemy. It is a pretty wide % depending on your bow/crossbow skill (and maybe range? I cannot remember exactly). The caveat is that if it hits it will always be a crit and almost a guaranteed one-hit kill if your skill is high and your bow is high-tier.

So do not use it at close range, start from long range, by the time the enemy approaches mid-range you should get a kill or at least a crit or two on them, then you switch weapon and beat the snot out of them.

You need skill for it. I have yet to play it focusing on the ranged weapon but just like with melee you get far better once you get good at it.

With melee, your damage is:

>Hit : Strength + Damage - Armor / 10 = Total Damage (minimum of 5)

<Crit : Strength + Damage - Armor = Total Damage (minimum of 5)

Your crit is governed by your melee skill.

Bows are the same, except instead of normal hits, you just miss. Your Bow % is your chance to hit within a given range, and as you shoot beyond that range, your chance to miss increases, so increasing your bow skill beyond 100% actually helps counter that, but it's not required.

Anyway, bows are fucking insane in NotR, stick with it and you'll vastly outperform melee. Don't fall for the master sword meme, dex melee weapons still use the same damage formula as strength melee weapons, so even if you pumped one-handed weapons you'll still do dick-all damage since you have no strength.
