its impossible to say with certainty whether it was because of the controversy, but keep in mind GoG's curation and selection of games has always been limited. Steam we know for a fact decided to censor based on the controversy because they allowed it on their store during its greenlight period and then some bigwig comes out and says its not right.

Don't kid yourself. Fan translations are just as shit as official translations these days. This doujin is a great example of this. These fan translators fucked up hard on three major points.
1 - it describes her grades as "not that bad." This phrase means her grades were bad, but not to an extreme level. The original line is "It wasn't like her grades were bad", a phrase that means her grades were good. This is important in establishing her personality.
2 - the fan translation completely omits lines that say she picks up on new things faster than most people, again showing that she's smart, and that her parents and brother thought of her as someone who had her shit together, again fucking up in the establishment of her character.
3 - the lines about how "everyone knew something was up" are pure fantasy on the part of the fan translator. The original text makes it clear that neither her brother nor her parents thought anything strange was going on. The omitted lines about her being smart and having a reputation as having her shit together are meant to let us know why nobody thought anything of it when she quit her club.

The game is based on a smaller, free indie game that was made for some "you only have one" game-making challenge. The entire point is that you have one arrow, die in one hit, and bosses die in one hit (though some of them require you removing barriers to their vulnerable spot, first). It's honestly not all that good. The game is heavily reliant on trial & error, to the point where many bosses will near-immediately kill you, if you don't know what to expect, going into the fight. Also, the bosses are spread out in an empty, boring overworld, obviously aping SotC, but without doing it nearly as well. While the art isn't bad, it's the same incredibly clean, sharp, angular style that a lot of recent indie games, like Hyper Light Drifter, use. There's also the story, which is just vague enough as to not really explain anything, but still tries to be "deep" by implying you might be the bad guy. It wasn't worth the time I put into it.

For all we know, they could have always wanted to put their VNs on GoG, but it wasn't up to GoG's "quality standards" so they weren't permitted, and now that Valve went full retard for a few days, GoG used this opportunity to make a marketing stunt.
