Yeah, they've release two huge updates that fixed the game so far. Right now it's everything I wanted it to be, unfortunately I don't think the guys who fell for the "do anything" MMO space game hype agree, not that they'd ever be content. It's a nice idea guy concept on paper but it's not something doable in reality. Jut ask the Scam Citizen devs.

>>14816353

If they lied about it being a game I wouldn't want when it reality was just the space game I wanted then yes, I think that was pretty smart. I pirated it first to check it out of course. I still play it and enjoy it from time to time.

The only space game I've got on my radar currently is Outer Wilds. I really wish I could find something like Starflight though, but it seems like they aren't making games like that anymore. I suppose the new X game could be good but that's in another genre really.

Molyneux never lied, game jurnos just took what he said out of context and projected his musings about what they were prototyping as set in stone features.

Anyway, NMS is a truly incredible game technically, it's really something else. Just the audio in this game is something I find fascinating. See video related. Even though I was speaking generally I have to ask, what other games do what NMS does? I don't mean in the ideaguy sense but technically. I've never seen a huge procedural game of this fidelity before and certainly no ones focused on exploration.

But being a technical marvel doesn't necessarily make something a good game. NMS doesn't really have a very strong core gameplay loop for example.

The "smooth" transition between planet and space is a fucking cutscene- as in they do not occupy the same gameworld space, and the planetary rotation with star and moons was all bullshit, it's the same fucking day/night cycle that minecraft has.

anon, that isn't how it works. It was real in his head but then reality kicked in. Basically it get excited for all the potential that could be done in his game engine, "our game is going to be 4D!". But then after toying around with the idea, it is deemed to be too complex or not worth the payoff so then your 4D trees are scrapped. This is a technique of how many pathological liars can lie and tell the truth at the same time, because it was real in the moment but then it was never real, then they either don't correct it, or they just go along with it.

Go to procedural planets where any given day large predators might ranfomly chase prey through the jungle, upsettable/destructable fauna all around. Attack freighters as a space pirate, dog fights, career classes.

If Bioware had half a fucking brain this is what Anthem would be, instead it looks to be a shallow Destiny clone and i'll bet D2 flopping has the suits shitting themselves. But thats a whole other subject.

Doubtful. Corporate executives would most likely take that as news that there's no competition now. Simple, you are all forced to stay together in the same system. You can only leave the system when everyone on the server joins up and leaves together.

Alternatively maybe the update where they let you build shit already put in functionality so you return to the same set of systems often (because what's the point in building a base if you never see it again). I recall reading at one point that Fable 1 was essentially rebuilt almost from scratch out of an alpha build after the game was nuked by Big Blue Box- the primary development studio and a satellite studio of Lionhead, not Lionhead proper- failing hard drives taking everything with them. No backups, or all backups died. It might have been here that I read it, in fact. Been so long I can't remember. But that's the gist of it; Fable 1 was developed more according to Molyneux' much-promising specs, and then was obliterated by hardware failure & redone in the span of a few months with the leftover pieces. And then Big Blue Box formally merged with Lionhead, which was formally acquired by Microsoft.

Evidently if this story was true either the magic or the talent in Big Blue Box died/left alongside the original Fable 1, explaining how the later games only seemed to contract in features, in addition to Molyneux and Lionheads' terrible multiproject management skills, constant money problems and coming down to the wire on every release. If Lionhead hadn't taken on so many projects at once and properly scheduled their development long term, I imagine they wouldn't have had so many cancellations, nor would those games that did release have been so skinflint on content compared to what they planned.

I dispute that. The real universe is mostly made of nothing. If your idea is to have HUEG and in terms of proportions somewhat realistic space game, how do you communicate to the player the feeling of how absurdly gigantic the distance between planets is? You would need a fast-forward feature, cryo-sleep, the player controlling not one person, but several generations of clones. And if players can diddle with the flow of time, how does having multi-player make sense?
