The whole naming scheme is fucked after BF1, if it's modern the title makes sense as a continuation from the last modern game BF4. Hopefully not, assault was far too good in previous games compared to the other classes. Balancing still needs something done to it in the next game, classes are too range specific in BF1 IMO. Meaning that loosing a firefight usually has less to do with skill and more to do with the range you happen to be at.

Having PUBG style Battle Royale in BFV would actually be pretty great, because even when the Frostbite engine's netcode is at its worst, it is still superior to PUBG's netcode at its best. I don't know how many people here have actually played Battlefield 2 Modern Combat, but by the looks of it it seems people don't even know it exists. BF2MC was made by DICE and released for PS2 and XBOX in the same year as BF2, as a spinoff on a different engine. I know some people will say >Console FPS right off the bat but hear me out, BF2MC actually did it right. It had so many great things in it that no other BF game had at the time that it's amazing how people look over it so much.
The singleplayer campaign is the focus of the game, and is by far the best SP in any BF game. The story tells of a war between NATO and China as they fight over the territory and oil industry of Khazakstan, and that's it. You don't see any sort of 15-minuted-long cinematic bullshit. You don't see any characters with any sort of sob story going to war to protect their loved ones. You don't see any speck of social justice garbage. You don't ever even see a face in the entire game. It just gives you a brief 30 second cutscene of your commander detailing your mission. Further briefings are covered in loading screens and are just as brief. The story line's straight up "This is your mission, now do it", and off you go straight into the gameplay. Every now and then, you get a quick cutscene of TV reports from both sides reporting the same events/battles in different ways as the war goes on, covering up what's really happening in the war by hiding facts and distorting the truth. Yes, the game touches upon the concept of the war of propaganda, and to this day I have yet to see another game that does this. The campaign is pretty long, 18 missions total, alternating between NATO and Chinese forces for you to play, and they make full use of the game's capabilities. No character is ever named in the entire game, nobody is decorated a hero, everyone's just a nameless soldier doing what they're told. The plot twist at the end is pretty great too.
Now for the gameplay itself. In every mission, you'll find yourself playing the moment the loading screen finishes. Your NCO is barking orders through comms about the objective, your team is sharing (actually useful) tactical chatter on their current situation and enemy movement with a degree of accuracy in military terminology that would make /k/ wet, and your gun's loaded. As you progress through your mission, your teammates warn you of incoming enemy fire, casualties, enemy positioning and movement and much, much more. You hear a fellow operator say "enemy contact, 10 o'clock high", look a bit to the left and then up, and there he is on top of a building. You hear another teammate shout into comms about an incoming tank at 3 o'clock, look right, and there it is. If one of your soldiers, or even you yourself die, someone will call casualty and request a medic or stretcher-bearers. If you hop on a jeep and request a nearby teammate to get in, they'll tell you they'll be taking the coax gun mount, promptly hop in it and start gunning people down as you take off driving. So much autistic dedication was put into the audio department that both NATO and Chinese forces have over 2800 lines of tactical chatter for the soldiers (each), with specific quotes that play in reaction to the direction you're being shot from, RPGs flying past you, which parts of your vehicle ares hit by enemy fire such as engine, steering, windows, wheels, helo rotors, tank optics, KIA coax gunner, and much more. DICE was /k/ as fuck even back then, and actually did their research when making the game.

The aiming and shooting, despite being on console, feels great and are pretty powerful. Air, armor, sea and infantry are all available to use. Tank shells will kill a soldier, a jeep, or a chopper in one shot all the same, LMGs and HMGs will mow people down just as you'd expect, and rifles will hit precisely where you're aiming. The game isn't mindless run'n'gun, and actually requires tactics; if all your soldiers die, it's game over, and trust me, the game can be pretty hard at times, especially at the final levels.

The most prominent feature of the game is the Hotswap mechanic. It basically allows you to play as any soldier on the battlefield. In the game you don't control just one dude, you can change from one to another in a blink of an eye at the push of a button. All you have to do is look at the soldier you want to take control of across the map, press the button and boom, you become that soldier. If you die, the game just gives you control of another unit anywhere in the map. It puts more focus on lightning fast strategic control of the map than just walking around and gunning people down all game long. One moment you're a dude planting a bomb, the next you're a guy in a chopper, the next you're managing artillery, the next you're a tank gunner, and then you're back to being a guy detonating the bomb, all in less than 10 seconds. In any other FPS, you play as one guy. In BF2 Modern Combat, you play as an entire battalion, on every single mission.
You'd think that compared to BF2, BF2MC would have an inferior selection of equipment and vehicles, but no. C4, AT, suppressed pistols, grenade launchers, medkits, laser designators, smoke grenades, mines, repair kits, mortar strike designators, everything you can think of from the original BF2 is there, and more. Vehicles? Battle tanks, IFVs, LAV's, Helos, Gunboats, mounted HMGs/Stingers/AT, they're all there too. Classes? Assault, Sniper, Spec Ops, Medic, Engineer, Support. All there, just like in PC BF2.
And they're all present in MP as well. Multiplayer worked just like the PC version, with wide (and completely original) maps and the same gamemodes. It had a total of 16 maps, just like PC BF2. Played just like it, too. Nothing's missing.
Modern Combat was built entirely from scratch to take full advantage of the hardware it was built for, and as a result, it boasts mind-blowing graphics that surpass BF2's by a mile, and most other titles at the time too. Seriously, just look up some gameplay of it. The shit DICE managed to pull of to make the game look that beautiful on consoles is a tremendous achievement. It's fucking ridiculous. BF2MC also pioneered scenario destruction, too.

The game's entire OST was carefully crafted with both buildup and action-packed sections. Each song is split into dozens of smaller parts in the game's files, which allows the game itself to change the background music dynamically according to how much action is happening. You'd think Modern Combat would be BF2 but slower because it's on consoles, but once you play it and see how balls to the wall nuts it really is with gunfire and explosions everywhere, you'll definitely reconsider. I'm not quite sure. The game's quite a beast graphics-wise since it was made to push the PS2's hardware to the limit. I don't know what you have but it might run okay. I'm running an i7 3770k with an HD7850 and it works well. Sadly, the game doesn't work on Hardware mode yet, only in Software mode, hence why there are some audio stutters in my gameplay recordings, as it's more taxing on the CPU when there's too much stuff happening. But that might be because I was recording while playing).
Try it out on PCSX2 1.5.0 dev build, it fixes the ghosting effect (last webm on my second post) on most PS2 games, among other performance refinements.

WWII is absolutely radical you niggers. The only reason you find it stale is because developers are utter garbage and they keep repeating the same old generic and bad formulas over and over. If you faggots think that Omaha Beach and a bunch of literally-who french villages represent WWII you're retarded. Every single WWII game is the same: You play as the Americans versus the Germans on Normandy with the exact same boring maps and same uniforms, vehicles, weapons and game modes. Sure there is Red Orchestra/Rising Storm to bring some fresh air but they're both utter garbage that nobody who played Ostfront liked.
WWII games could have massive battles with dozens of different units. Kursk was never done right, Battle of Crete was never done right, Battle of Monte Cassino was never done right, Metaxas Line was never done right, practically no battle in the entire war was ever done right in vidya.
There is massive potential. Just because the developers are incompetent hacks doesn't mean that WWII sucks.

Vietnam is a breath of fresh air for the series and genre, the only Vietnam game I know that's active fight k ow is RS2 and I hear it's not good. Also not giving tripwire any money from it. I very highly doubt Dice will break the mold, their campaigns outside of bad company are always boring as shit and super safe. And I'll bet that the multiplayer maps would be just as lackluster. Vietnam would be great to showcase Dice graphics, all the foliage and wildlife mixed in with the gameplay of fire physics, setting war traps, and camo would be fucking amazing and fun to play. ok just watched it. hard to say if there is any BC influence because that trailer was a non-stop string of visual set-piece "gags" that can't possibly represent the actual game. The steampunk vaginal-fighter has a quip at the end but i'm not sure if I remember Bad Company having that many zingers and punch-lines. There was the hillbilly character that had non-sequitor lines, but for the most part the dialogue was a lot like the movie it's ripping-off. It pretty much plays it straight (because it's essentially a black comedy). Same for the visuals. BC had some warlord or sheik with a gold helicopter IIRC, but aside from that i dont remember that much that was fantastical. It's been awhile since i played i though.
These game are going so uber-retard with the rule of cool (because they need to sell microtransaction-related cosmetics) that they're basically making alt-reality fantasy games. 3 and 4 were good for what they wanted to go for, a high tech near future battlefield. The faster beat combined with the iconic few notes made them pretty alright, BF4 more than 3 IMO.

It's not like every war game until now has been 100% serious or realism focused, but this really is a whole new level of historical debauchery. I'll admit I enjoy virtual violence as much as the next guy, but when you're dealing with a subject matter that is looked back on as the most massive social calamity in human history, you need to show some reverence.
