Does anyone else have 0 interest in indie games?

If I'm going to sit down and play a game these days I'm gonna make sure it's, for lack of a better word, a "proper" game. To me indie games are too middle of the road, they're more time demanding than a minigame but still not quite "full" games. I'm not saying games like FTL, Shovel Knights or Terraria are bad games, I just have no interest at all in them. Especially paying money for them, I have never and probably will never pay money for an indie game.

I've played a handful of indie games over the years and none of them stuck with me the way games like MGS3, Ico, Dragon's Dogma, Fallout New Vegas or Wind Waker did. You can't make games of that calliber on an indie budget, and that's just an unfortunate fact. To me the most an indie can aspire to be is a timewaster, boot it up for an hour or two to have fun with the gimmick then discard it.

As you say, there's a lot of innovation in indie games, likely because the smaller budgets allow them to experiment. I think it's because you have a very basic knowledge of indie games and haven't tried a good amount of them is the reason why none interest you. Something like Dwarf Fortress or Rimworld has no AAA counterpart and are good indies to try out. Tales of May'eyal, elona, and Catasylsm dark days ahead are good roguelikes that does very different things from one another but are very solid and again doesn't have an AAA counterpart. Yume Nikki, Lisa, To the Moon has narratives that I find much more interesting and engaging than AAA titles. If you can't find something out there that doesn't interest you then I don't know what to say.

It's like they get half of it right and then the other half wrong so you end up with some decent ideas and execution but not enough skill to push it to it's fullest or budget to have enough content. I don't necessairly agree that indie games will always be forgettable time wasters but I agree that they will probably never reach the same level of quality as PS2 games, not because of a lack of budget but a lack of skill and drive to actually improve(because it seems to me anything indie remotely decent is praised to high heaven and back by media outlets).

In my experience Indie games I've stuck with for a long time tend to be gameplay focused and use random/procedural generation. If you can only into content focused AAA games you're probably a casual piece of shit who has to pursue constant novelty instead of mastering game systems. I would agree that content-focused indie games are often a poor return on investment as they rarely have more than 10 hours worth of content.

Not necessarily. Like alpha and beta developer graphics can mean many different things depending on who is using the phrase. In some cases developer content is better than what ends up shipping - Portal 2 comes to mind with Wheatley's Valve voice actor. I Like indie games, but I get your frustration. Most indie games, due to budget constraints, are 2D sprite shows and the aesthetic is getting stale. I bought this graphics card for something ya know.

That doesn't mean that those games aren't good. Shovel knight, Infinifactory, and Stanley's Parable I all adore. But there is no way to find anything remotely decent if it isn't shilled by an e-celeb.

Plus, it feels one-hit-wonderish, if that is a word. Most of these major indie titles stand alone and their devs aren't really known for making more. And those that do make more then to just make the same game but slightly different ala Limbo to Inside.

In the end though, I can't complain. Since indies still make good games occasionally. You just gotta find them first.

I've said this before once. Indies used to be about innovation, and hell, in the 80s, you could whip up a game in your room, mail the tape to a publisher and get a job in the industry that way. Indies came back around the PS3 era with easy to use dev tools and as a response to AAA getting progressively worse, but innovative indies don't sell and can't really market themselves. Indieshit that sells well is just "old game, but worse".

We have Duck Tales, but worse; Earthbound, but gay; Mario Golf GBC but mediocre; Banjo but even more bland, so on, so forth.

This is something I realized a long time ago, and everyone else here should too: you want a good game? Dig for ages and pray. You want a truly great game? Make it yourself.

frankly, making my own game nowadays is way more enjoyable than playing anything.

I don't understand this inexplicable aversion to trichording, considering most Descent multiplayer communities consider it an essential skill. It's one of those bug-turned-feature things like combos in Street Fighter or rocketjumping in Quake, though even in the case of Descent movement it was intentionally not normalized from the get go because non-normalized movement in a 6DoF game just felt more responsive. It's certainly a feature in the case of Overload.

No, I think it's more due to incompetence, lack of direction, lack of knowledge of game design and an undue sense of self worth. A lot of these minimalist pixel art indie games show an unknowing or knowing disregard of established game design theories that directly hurt the quality of the game, create more mediocre designs, and even the most praised ones like the stanley parable and bastion commit to these issues. Even those knowing of the basic theories of game design rarely ever explore the theories to remotely the same degree a well made game from 20 years ago or from 1 year ago does. This kind of incompetence is shown at every level of Western design and it's a constant throughout generations. I'm not convinced these people know how to make games and it is ultimately what makes the Japanese industry far more enjoyable than the Western one.

I'm not sure what you mean with rhythm, though positioning and ship rotation matters a lot in multiplayer. It really just depends on your dedication, the tools at your disposal, and the expertise through which you can produce something great. While many facets of production must be purchased, there are plenty of free solutions these days, and that means that the only necessary component you really need is the know-how and the dedication to make it all work.

It's like the difference between a corporate entity like Sony Music, who can provide their artists with the latest in cutting edge sound design, engineering, and supplementary musical talent, and an amateur musician who turned his basement into a studio and who must rely on cheap alternatives to produce his music. While the corporate monolith will definitely be able to produce better quality sound in a technical sense, they can't systematically produce something like genuine love for music itself, which is arguably one of the most important ingredients in being a successful musician.

Indies can, when done right, be very satisfying short experiences. The key word being SHORT. On that sort of budget, you can't over-extend, and trying to do so only creates a padded boring game. Nobody wants a sandwich that's all bread because they ran out of filling. I love short, challenging, games. Furi and Superhot come to mind. They take a while to get through at first, but after a couple playthroughs, it gets easier and easier until you can blast through in an hour or so.

It's satisfying to have a game you can play front to back in a single sitting, no menuing, no collectibles, no story elements, just a straight up enjoyable experience that you can finish comfortably (not counting speedrunning) within an afternoon.

Project Zomboid, Factorio (although it's not that fun for me), Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress (never played it myself though), Corruption of Champions, Dominions 5 and the Dark Mod are good/interesting games.

I really like the Dark Mod. It's the only game I never reinstalled, when I tried to quit video games multiple times throughout the years. I have save games that go back to 2013. It feels weird.
