I use both methods. Why limit yourself to just one? Sometimes the the composer is quite active but he only worked on a game or two, so if you only go by games you are missing out on a lot of great music.

I didn't think about it that way. Fair enough then, though I don't agree with it exactly. But I do agree with the fact that playing the game can greatly enhance your appreciation of the music. Since music is far easier to go through than games, I've listened to far more game OSTs than games I have played. There have been numerious songs that I enjoyed far more once I played its respective game and gained a greater appreciation for it.

What are your feelings about remixes/arrangements of vidya OSTs? Both when they're done by the original creator/composer and fan remixes? Like ZUN's remixes as one example.

Depend of the remix. What tends to happen is that the song is different enough for me not to associate. Some songs are good enough to be listened on their own because they set the mood of the game so that's something to get into consideration too.

So update, I've learned he hates basically all on Nintendo. After trying to get him to play Mario Odyssey he tried to break my controller after jumping off the edge within a few minutes, while also being 100% lost as to where to go to find Cappy.

Truly it was amazing to watch the next generation in action. He tried to start shouting when I didn't let him break the controller but I think the following slap was the first parenting he's ever gotten because he shut right up.
