I was looking at videos like embed and I must ask, where has gone this school of art? Shadow of the Beast and Turrican are classics so why is nobody taking inspiration from them nowadays?

I mean sure those sprites are detailed and well animated, there is a lot of shit going on at all times, graphical fidelity is top notch.
But art style itself is atrocious. It tries to be both realistic and cartoony/comx~y.
I guess you can say that modern bamham games are successors of this direction - both overly realistic AND cartoony at the same time, trying to hide ugliness behind MUH GRAPHICS.

It's pretty weird seeing how insanely buff and built Batman is only to see him glide around the place at insane speeds and do all this weird twirling and shit. If I recall correctly Knight had this Throw Counter move that had your counters throw people across rooms. I'm mentioning it because I remember the animations for it being more grounded and focused on how Batman is much stronger than anyone else than he is faster or more agile, and I think I would have liked the focus to be on that more than all the ballerina twirling, at least with how Batman is built in the games.
I do agree all these serious and realistic video games are a joke. Going back to Knight, the whole story is a predictable joke(Example: Barbra Gordon "dies", the scene lasts for like 10 seconds of Batman kneeling in front of her corpse, then suddenly he thinks of what to do next and goes for it, and that complete and utter lack of fanfare or weight it carried immediately spoils the fact that she's not dead,example 2 halfway into the game you go into this area where the game repeatedly pauses itself so it can tell the story of Jason Todd and then lo and behold the big twist is that king bitch himself is Jason Todd) and I find it weird how all of the heavy shit is in the little paragraphs you get for solving riddles. There's this one about some guy going to professor Pyg to get his son back and then he sees that his son is now a horrible faceless and mindless doll, and the guy is about to suffer the same fate and then the game shys from even showing blood or gore or just about anything that would invoke an emotion that isn't confusion.

That's a very difficult question. Perhaps one could argue that arcades effectively stopped in the mid-late '80s in Europe, and home computer fans were left to their own accord to figure out how to innovate and expand upon arcade genres while they missed out on all the stuff that was refined in the later '80s and early '90s. Maybe it's a cultural thing where Europeans constantly feel the need to "intellectualize" an action experience. I don't know.

A lot of European games at the time were made in collaboration with demoscene artists who created the style you're looking at. You might recognize it as well from cracktros as those were also scene. I used to do demoscene stuff back around that time although I was a PC coder and American. It was a blast.

Analog health bar and damage despite having lives, tons of collectibles, somehow they managed to mess up one of the most fundamental aspects of free scrolling by making the way to initiate scrolling too close to the edge of the screen. Turrican is full of all the classics. It has all these attempts to make a run 'n' gun more complicated without actually delivering anything meaningful along the way. And it has pretty yawn-inducing run 'n' gun action to top that off.

Then what is it? By what metric does this game deserve to be measured? Platformer? The platforming in Turrican runs the range from incredibly repetitive and uninteresting to rage-inducing. Rarely does it ever feel satisfying.

Maybe it's not even fully trying to be Contra, but rather a fusion of run 'n gun action and levels centered around exploration and finding secrets, much like the Apogee scrolling action games.

Definitely not in Turrican though. The scoring in Turrican basically boils down to collecting all the stuff and destroying all the things, a trivial feat in a game with backtracking. The only real skill score in Turrican measures is the player's ability to not die due to its cheap ass level design and enemy placement. But all that aside, Turrican is far too long to be suited for score play.
To be perfectly fair though, very few run 'n' guns have ever had good scoring systems. Contra was broken with infinite peon milking for pretty much every game except Contra Rebirth. Elevator Action Returns has an annoying milking system where you blow the lights out and stand around punching enemies until your timer runs out. Most Metal Slug games invariably either have random point item bullshit, excessive milking, or debilitating bugs involving scoring.

Well, I'm not educated enough on period run n' gun shooters, but the other anon did mention Contra and such. It seems you're also comparing the game to Metroid, which is a losing battle for blatantly obvious reasons. Ultimately if a game has a similar system or mechanics (i.e. platforming, running n gunning) you will have to end up comparing that game with its contemporaries which did those things better, even if they aren't the "focus."

The first Metrid is overrated and actually has worst exploration than Turrican. And we have agreed that Turrican and Contra have different philosophies. That's my point really. To my knoledge there's no game like it at the time. Of course Mario did better the plataforming and Contra the shooting but Turrican is its own beast. And was praised as such (and for the graphics).

Sorry but that's just wrong. The exploration in Metroid is much more meaningful because the game is a) actually non-linear and b) is full of abilities to collect which actually change the gameplay up. Turrican in contrast is much more linear and most of its collectibles are just ammo, lives, and points.
