I feel like getting into RTS games. Someone recommend me some that are good to start off with.

Red Alert 2, Age of Mythology, Warcraft 3. Three of the best RTS campaigns.

To add to this age of empires 1, and 2 are also good recommendations. These are the games that started me on RTS.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2

Dawn of War

Starcraft (NOT Starcraft 2)

You've got most of the popular kinds of RTS on that short list, OP. There are many other kinds, but if you're just starting these should suffice.

Despite all the shit its given, SC2 has a really good campaign for someone new to RTS. A lot of older RTS tend to have campaigns where if you don't manage your resources and build up properly you end up in a situation where you progress very slowly, usually going a unit at a time. As a general rule to avoid this in RTS games, make sure you are getting a lot of resources and have multiple buildings of the same kind that produce units.

Here's a list of campaigns I can recommend. Keep in mind, a lot of expansions back in the day added a second campaign, so don't miss the first one.

>Warcraft 3, Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne

>Warhammer 40k, Dawn of War and Winter Assault

>Starcraft 1 and Brood War

>Command and Conquer (basically any of them)

>Impossible Creatures

>Battle Realms

And then here's a mixed bag of games with non-linear campaigns (world conquering), lackluster campaigns but very good multiplayer etc but generally all feature great gameplay

>Rise of Nations

>Warhammer 40k Dark Crusade (expansion to Dawn of War but does not require the base game)

>Supreme Commander (check out Forged Alliance Forever for multiplayer)

>Star Wars Empire At War and expansion Forces of Corruption

>Warlords Battlecry 2 or 3

>Z

Legacy of the Void was fine except for the start and ending and any time Kerrigan showed up. Uniting all the different-but-similar Protoss factions was fun.

8cb0e0 No.14766928

>>14766370

>Legacy of the Void was fine at any point

No. It was never fun. I fucking hated it. The mission objectives were always "kill or control x of y" and it felt like dogshit. The whole thing felt pointless from start to finish and there was almost no memorable missions or anything of value whatsoever, aside from the one Alarak mission. The rest are just hot garbage.

Wings of liberty by comparison felt dynamic and great in terms of mission objectives and just general fun. I remember every single wings mission. I can't say the same for Legacy whatsoever, except for the shit that I was personally offended by.

The last fucking mission of the epilogue is the literal opposite of epic and it basically defines the game as a whole. You fucking destroy floating crystals on a large map while enemies and buildings with large health pools occasionally spawn to annoy you.

That is without a doubt the gayest fucking shit, and the worst fucking ending to a nearly 20 year long series I have ever seen, and everything I just said precludes the downright awful, insulting and garbage-tier writing present throughout the whole thing. The best parts of the actual gameplay were spear of adun abilities, and unit customization (which still felt "okay" at best, there were a few really cool things but it gave a little too much freedom (as in, pretty much no constraints made it child's play to literally steamroll through these fucking boring missions; in Wings you had the credits which was a very real limitation on your customization that didn't feel lame at all and still allowed you to tackle things creatively or not.

It just felt like garbage to play overall and I hated it.

Skip AoE I and go straight for AoE II. Get the original with the expansion, apply the userpatch and enjoy. Finish the tutorial campaign and Joan's and get to Barbarossa's as fast as possible. It's one of the best campaigns I've played in any RTS. I should note that there isn't much story or narrative in these but their gameplay is superb.

Alternatively, you could get the HD version. On top of gameplay changes and updates it comes with 3 new expansions (which have better campaigns. The detail and atmosphere is amazing).

You can get AoE III if you like narrative driven campaigns, it's about the only thing it got right.

Once you learn the basics I highly suggest Warzone 2100 it's kinda neato for building your own troops using different parts, if you want a balls to the walls challenge the campaign is fucking hard where the AI throws some serious shit your way. But you get to keep your base between missions untill you complete an act.

The game went freeware a long time ago and a fan project has kept it going so it's really easy to get.

Hostile Waters.

Do you want an RTS with a well written story by Warren Ellis, with neat British VA? Do you want a game with competent AI units that can hold their own in a fight (though they fuck up with the pathfinding occasionally)? Do you want to customize all your vehicles with weapons, armor, shields, cloaking and be able to jump into any of the vehicles at any time and control them in third person?

If the answer is yes to all these questions then Hostile Waters is the game for you. Also, watch the kickass intro. The game simply oozes awesome, on top of being subtly subversive.

If you're looking for a starting point, either go with RA2 or C&C Generals.

Those two games have a great mix of base building, economy management, faction differences and micro/macro army command for getting rid of that RTS virginity.

Generals has worker management, which is in more of the genre than the classic C&C conyard style.

From there, it depends on what you liked from Generals and RA2.

If you want more units with cool abilities, pick up a Warcraft game or Starcraft (not 2, 2 is shit)

If you don't really care about flashy abilities and just want to shit tanks down your opponent's throat, go with either TA or Supcom.

If you don't much care for faction differences, or really really like worker management, dip into the Age of Empires series.

Is Return to the Castle Wolfenstein good enough for the list? Not judging, sincere question. It's not that memorable to me.

Not to be a contrarian, but I'm not sure HL2 stands the test of time for the list. I do recommend playing it but It's nowhere near an artistically transcendent experience, if you'll pardon the pretense.

Why the fuck is Crysis there lmao

Is Ultimate Spiderman the best of them all? I just remember the cartoony graphics, they've all melded into a single concept in my memories.

So Chinatown Wars is better than SA? Maybe I should look into playing it.

I really like that you put the usual cynicism behind and just focused on the merit of the games. Must have been difficult not to deny Psychonauts and some Sonic games their place.
