I played Shadow of Chernobyl with no mods. It wasn't really my thing. Maybe I should have given it a bit more of a chance, and I might try it again at some point, but it just didn't really grab me in any way, probably due to the setting. I suppose it's far from my favorite genre, so getting my attention is harder because of that as well.
What I don't get though is how many people there are defending certain of it's flaws. Mainly the bugginess, but if you mention in the threads that you're playing it with no mods, you get laughed at, from what I've seen. Pretty much the same arguments that Bethesda games get a lot of the time.

Mostly because for such a niche game, it has an incredibly active mod community, and a huge range of gameplay experiences as a result. It can be a tacticool shooter where you manually reload each mag, it can be survival horror where you refuse to go out at night, it can be a realistic rust and puking simulator (looking at you, Misery).
And yeah the base game (even patched) is finicky as a bitch, it is objectively improved with mods (even if its just the ZRP). Memes aside, the game is worth a solid playthrough. And then you end up with thousands of hours of gametime and so many different great stories to share on hungarian basket-weaving forums.

I played about 3 hours of Shadow of Chernobyl and I didn't see anything that popped out as "atmospheric"
Eventually I got bored because it seemed like I wasn't doing anything of consequence.
The Witcher games and the Arkham series have been the most atmospheric games I've played.
I don't think Stalker is a bad game I just don't understand what people are using to justify their nostalgia.
It's the same thing with Dark Messiah.
I can see the magic in that game being seen as a "great combat system" but the melee and ranged really feels dated.
Vermintide for example does really good melee, but it's never really noticed.
Dark Messiah lets you shoot ice at the ground to slip up people and kick them into spikes using laughable source engine physics, everyone says its the best thing ever.

You're not supposed to see STALKER, you're supposed to experience it. Everything about it is bleak and barren compared to a lot of other games, but that doesn't really matter as to why people like STALKER. Play on the hardest difficulty and just watch the AI while you do your own thing. It's pretty unforgiving and unlike Bethesda games, nearly every NPC has their own random goals in addition to the typical "wake-work-sleep" schedule of those games.
I honestly don't know how to explain the game, but the Call of Chernobyl mod, with some small mods for it like Full Simulation A-Life, is basically STALKER at its purest. You're just a part of the world, and not some "chosen one" or some person that can kick ass just because.
Basically, approach it and play it like you're a tourist or a part of one of those "study abroad" groups. Enjoy the new world you just dropped into. There's not much nostalgia there if people are still playing it.

Those games are practically the foundation for most games that I like in-general. I'd really hate to get rid of Star Wars games though, and I would miss Resident Evil, Tekken, Half-Life 1, Halo 1-3, Dork Souls, Sonic 2 and Mania, Mega Man, Daggerfall and Morrowind, Deus Ex 1, Fallout 1-2 and New Vegas, STALKER, Bayonetta, Warcraft 2 and 3, MonHun, Rome: Total War, GTA Vice City and San Andreas, and some of the Pokemons and Final Fantasies, but in the grand scheme of things I think those games would exist in a spiritual form, based on the foundations of the games I chose to keep around. Even the shittiest series now had some good installments.
The rest of those series though… CoD, Mass Effect, AssCreed, and Battlefield, were barely good to begin with and have done more harm to the industry the more I think about it, and honestly they can just fuck-off.

I don't know all of these but for sure keep Pokemon, Deus Ex and GTA - all unique, genre-defining kind of games. Then add Super Mario just for the impact. Stuff like Doom, Halo, Half life can be dumped, there's thousands of shooters. Same with Witcher, Zelda etc. Thousands of RPGs out there. Dump Street Fighter and Tekken - there's still Virtua Fighter for example. And WoW on the list must be a joke.

The main one I was thinking of was the 2-3 versions of the same exact game. The 3rd versions add a little but a single release per generation would easily suffice.

Street Fighter II was essentially the genesis of fighting games whereas Deus Ex just merged some existing gameplay mechanics from disparate genres together. It's much easier to create a Deus Ex-like from scratch in a void without one than it is to create a Street Fighter 2 like fighter without the Street Fighter series.

Street Fighter defined the entire genre and without it either wouldn't exist or would be completely different.
Deus Ex didn't really have much of an impact outside of pseudo-intellectual circles and its influence was middling at best, as shortly after it and its disappointing sequel the genre disappeared for the most part.

Pokemon is poorly balanced trash.
Final Fantasy is only good for nostalgia - the games are dated, and Squeenix can't make a good game any more. There's other games like it, so no loss there.
Metal Gear isn't my thing. I'm a bit selfish, choosing Street Fighter over it. Same goes for Bayonetta and The Witcher.
Most of the rest deserve delet.
