Slopes and water/lava blocks could be the easiest things to implement as their own blocks. Now that Switch is dependent on downloads and updates pretty sure they can make a more modular engine.
For slopes I was thinking about shaking ground blocks until it turns into a bull dozer. You use bull dozer tool to flaten corner blocks into slopes. Depending on the angle of slope (probably no more than five blocks) will determine what angles connect. Oh and bulldozer is unavailable in SMB1 style.
Water and lava/poison blocks are just that, blocks with water and lava inside them. Now I understand they both will have to be on a new layer or use the secondary platform layer. Why lava too? Because you can put unmeltable objects in like platforms, blocks, and enemies like water for clever level design even if poison/lava is a kill Mario zone.

Stage building always worked better on gamepad. So I expect handheld mode to be as comfy and the ideal way to build levels. TV mode would be best for testing levels. You can still edit in TV mode via pointer or control stick mouse with joycons/pro controller. Also have Pokken gamepad support because why not?
That said I do want a modular engine rewrite and GUI update. Keep assets similar behavior as original but add more "layers" like background/foreground tiles, screen placement options besides one or two layers, slopes, and other things technically possible on Wii U but easily doable on Switch. The extra assets/game objects can be added later over time like a day/night or light/dark switch for current level themes.
Heck since they'll have to build the search function in game this time why not have level map codes for sharing with friends. Yes level maps as in you can design a mimi SMB3 style map with toad houses, branching paths, locked doors, two forts, one castle/airship, and secret exits.

You know what else the first game was on? The Wii U, which has a resistive touch screen tablet where only one touch at a time can be recognized and only an internal storage of 32 gigs at most if people did not use external hard drives. GUI aside this gave the app hardly no room for expansions which could have included more assets and bug fixes. And now Wii U doesn't have Miiverse anymore. Which means you're going to have to use the Super Mario Maker search in web browser to find anything.
Of course, if Mario Maker comes out for Switch expect share and search to be skekelwalled. But at least the SD card slot gives the Switch some expandable storage for updates and the better hardware upgrade can have some better level editing tools. Capacitive multi-touch can also use gesture shortcuts as well.
