I think they're hoping to pull a "DOTA 2" and squeeze into the market. LoL was dominating the MOBA scene and DOTA 2 still managed to get in there. It is a 100 player deathmatch with some tricks to funnel everyone into a small area until only one remain.
It is a fun game mode conceptually, but its novelty wears down fast. However this kind of gameplay is somehow excellent for streaming for a number of reasons I will not go into detail, so a game mode became a genre in itself because kids love watching people stream it.

That has already happened, it's called Fortnite. That game pisses off PlayerUnknown and his chinese bosses because not only Epic re-used the BR concept but they also improved it and PU can't follow. The console version runs at 60fps while PUBG can't even load the textures properly.

I do know is that funds were redirected away from Planetside 2 development into H1Z1, and now with the construction system there was a 'credible' rumour that more funds were redirected away from PS2 during its resurgence into the H1Z1 eSport. Now the company is having layoffs (of which many are Planetside 2 devs) and apparently the Russians are involved.
Either way, PS2 has been constantly shafted for other projects, and it feels real fucking shitty since the interest was there (thus the funds to be redirected away) from the get go. Corporate minds just didn't want it to be nurtured is all.
