It was mad popular in my high school 10 years ago. The French did focus on their local market first. It helped that it was the first real game people could pay the subscription with through phone credit : kids didn't need their parent's credit cart to play, as long as they had a mobile phone contract. Even girls and chads were playing it, it was pretty crazy.
Last I checked it's pretty dead, filled with multiaccount autists, bots, and broken people who play it out of habit and not for fun. The only person I know of that still plays it is a mental (like, full on schizo) 23 years old girl.
The game itself is not bad, it was just never meant to be anything else than a small scale online game inspired by tactical rpgs. It caught on because of its business model, its artstyle (even today French comics often have that anime vibe, especially when aimed at kids and teenagers), and the fact that almost any machine could run it. Though I never played it much, I don't like grindy games.

I think I still have a XB360 drive with that game installed on it. Criminally underrated and badly in need of a port to PCs. I understand why Ankama keeps focusing on online MMO meme games like Krosmaga, but they need to do single player games again. They have a great world with a lot of potential for fun stories that can explore all kinds of genres. I don't even care if they just port the mechanics from Wakfu or Dofus to a single player game. Ankama has been working on other games but most of them are not using the Wakfu/Dofus franchise. And for the most part, all mobile. Or maybe they are just publishing those.
I know one steam, searching for games by Ankama it lists Fly'n (singleplayer game bout birds) Abraca (which is a same couch/splitscreen multiplayer game with no online) and all the Wakfu/Dofus spinoff mmos/TCC

I'm kinda burned out on it and don't really like the way it's going in terms of artstyle, a lot of simpler NPC designs are getting replaced with stuff that verges on Anime OCs. But as far as MMOs go it's a little offbeat and probably one of the better ones you can look into. They recently released mono-account servers that exclude multiboxing autists (people who play multiple accounts at once) if you do start on these new servers you'll want to transfer to Illyazelle afterwards (that's the mono account server).
The sub isn't too pricey, and once you got to maybe level 160~ it's piss easy to maintain a sub with game currency, it will put a bit of a dent in your income but you don't need to work very hard to buy weekly/monthly subs consistently.

At it's core, it's fucking amazing. A dozen and a half different classes, all with multiple possible specializations each, in-game economy and ecosystems driven entirely by players, inter-faction politics that spread across the world, tons of dungeons and unique gear, motherfucking HAVEN BAGS… But, man, did they fuck it all up.
Season 1 of Wakfu is definitely some of the best. S2 has it's moments, but it delves pretty hard into DBZ nonsense once you reach the OVAs that bridge the gap between 2 and 3.. plus there's also the comics in between, because they thought a great way to tell really important story stuff would be in some comics. S3 has some neat characters, but the story is hot garbage. The head writer had no idea what the fuck he was doing. He outright admitted it. He forgot about a ton of stuff, didn't plan ahead, had no answers for some of the questions he raised, and ripped the lore a new asshole in about ten different ways. I had hope that they were setting up for a hard lore reset, but instead, turns out they just fucked up everything and are likely never getting a S4.

I think the lore was fucked way before that. For the longest time they tried to keep the games and show in sync, but then they started making pointless changes to the game that fuck the lore in the ass and contradics it entirely, and they are probably trying to figure out if the new season is gonna try to connect to the game lore or show lore or comic lore because they are all fighting one another.
Some examples are how the game takes place 10 years or so before Season 1 of the show, proof of it exists in the game by the fact that you can HEAR baby Yugo if you go to his house and try to go upstairs. However at some point devs decided to start adding nods to stuff later on so now you can find Nox's mask in game and text referencing something that didnt happen yet.
Another thing that i will never forgive was how in the beta, you could walk north from alibert's home, reach the bandit toll bridge and then enter the market where the Black Crow and wife are. This is established on the show by how Yugo and others need to walk there, and in the comics revealing the Black Crow's origin. At some point right before the game got out of beta they decided to remove the ENTIRE island of the market (because they never finished the extra territories for the other nations so they decided to just remove them for balance) and a year later they were added again, as islands completely disconnected from the area and on the other side of the ocean, only reachable through boats.
I also remember hearing about how the original writers completely OPPOSED the idea of Eliatropes being a playable class in the game because Yugo being the ONLY one of his race is the MAIN plot point of the entire thing. I dont know what or who changed but after the movie they pulled the most retarded move where "Eliatrope clones" were launched all over the world, across time. So now we have not-eliatropes as playable races in Dofus, which takes place hundreds of years before the wakfu era, and in the wakfu era mmo. That last bit is a whole can of fuck by itself. Noone knows what Eliatropes are even thou many of them were spread all over the planet through time travel and so on.
Its a real shame, i really really love the Wakfu/Dofus setting. The way how classes are connected to which gods each individual praises by inheriting traits from them, and the fact that gods in the wakfu world actually exist and do shit. They are not just entities people pray to and offer tribute, they come down to the world and live among people and do shit, get laid, marry, start bar fights, make friends and give people divine retribution.

Ankama has a studio in japan. If i remember right, the jp studio and french one had arguments early on because they both had different ideas on which direction they wanted to push the Ogrest character.
I think the present version of Ogrest as a giant monster who spends all day growling and being angry at the top of his mountain is the french vision, while the JP vision of him was as a giant monster who was bored and isolated from the word at the top of the mountain, not angry nor vengeful but depressed due to all the betrayals he suffered. i remember very early art of him showing this version

What's doubly awful about this is not only how badly it fucks up all of time and history in the Wakfu and Dofus eras, but they went back in S3 and tried to rationalize it away, saying all the Eliotropes insisted on staying secluded to keep from altering history (BRAVO, TOT, YOU RETARDED FROG.).. but in the second season, they established a very clear and clean way to introduce real Eliatropes as a playable race. The entire fucking point of S2 and it's final climax was revealing that the entire Eliatrope race (minus nearly all of the ruling immortal Eliatropes and Dragons like Yugo and Adamai) survived inside a pocket dimension reachable through the Eliacube. The big fucking stink about it was that they intended to let them out and allow them to live on the World of Twelve.. but they never resolved that. They fucking forgot about it. Yugo went on for years longer to go fuck up shit in all kinds of other ways and they never once revisited the idea of the entire race of his people trapped in limbo.

Jesus christ, I wondered why this shit with EliOtropes happened when there were tons of EliAtropes right there, and it seems they really did just go fucking forget. By the sound of it I'm glad I didn't watch S3, the Throne of Ice or whatever it was was garbage so I guess it's not made a recovery.

They're pretty similar, overall Dofus has better class balance, more challenging PvE, a better PvP matchmaking system, more balanced PvE, a lot more build/gear variety and more content. It is however dragged down by a shitload of boring fetch quests, Wakfu has a few quests but nowhere near as many as Dofus and they're less likely to make you want to slit your wrists.
On top of this Dofus has recently released Mono-account servers which prevent people using multiple characters, whereas in Wakfu you're stick with it and they even made a feature that lets you use multiple characters with one account. Overall Dofus is the better game if you plan to try one of them, though you need a lot of patience to drag yourself through all the damn quests the game throws at you.

Dunno if you're referring to Dofus or Wakfu, Fogger is solid though somewhat one-dimensional in Wakfu (though admittedly pretty much every class is). In Dofus last I knew they were strong but somewhat awkward, as if you fuck up in PvE you'll whack your allies or heal enemies. They might be better since the recent alternate spell thing but I've not played with it since then.
