A complex work like a videogame (and a good one at that, dor fort is pretty good don't get me wrong) is not a one man effort.

Complaining about work specialization makes no sense whatsoever. Hire people to help you code, people to help develop UIs, at least one comprehensive tileset that fully integrates with the game.

Even kickstarter would be better than nothing at this point.

That's literally what dwarf fortress is though, and so are many other more popular indie games. Adding more cooks to the kitchen makes the work slightly faster, but also complicates it because there's now an enormous bottleneck in the thought process. And anyone can make/switch tilesets, he could just make some kind of "store" where people can browse/add/select them.

One thing I agree with though is UI design, I doubt he specifically wanted it to be a piece of shit.

In general no. However, Dwarf Fortress has achieved an enormous following. I think if he actually went looking publishers would be lining up to throw money at it. Whether that would end up as a good thing or not… probably not.

The next update is said to properly implement insanity again. But it'll be massively broken because almost all of the needs of a dwarf are broken and cannot be fulfilled (even the ones that exist in game) leading to dwarves having permanently worsening needs and impossible to fix stress. A lot of happy thought triggers just don't happen and Toady hasn't mentioned fixing any of that, so we'll see if this will be another broken update.
