I'd classify them as a fantasy race. Since their monster features adhere to human physiology (Tentacles follow human hair rules, "beak" is where human teeth would be, etc). While monster girls are 50/50 human and monster physiology. Like Centaurs, Mermaids or all the girls from Monster Musume. Like many fantasy races the Inklings can become 100% monster through a transformation. That's not even to mention that Splatoon lore implies that as Inklings grow they lose their squid-like features to the point where adult Inklings have even less of those features than the kids do and could possibly be hard to distinguish from normal humans. Serious question:
I get that the gameplay looks fun, but how can anyone actually like the art design? The ugly character design is a huge turn-off. I mean they could have salvaged it. There is fan art of the same characters that make the style more appealing but as it stands the Inkling and Octolings are all ugly as sin.
Also, I haven't played the game because it's multiplayer and I generally don't enjoy multiplayer unless its LAN or Couch co-op with real people. Therefore I am not judging it on any other criteria then general aesthetics. It's not the worst designs, It just seems off to me and could be drastically improved with a few tweaks.

As somebody who owns both art books, I can safely say I like the overall art direction as originally designed, as opposed to rendered 3D models. Something is lost in the overall design when converted to game format. Inklings are a head taller, are more lithe, and have more angular facial features and a rounder, more bun-like head, which makes them look like really cute tryhards at a believable age. It perfectly depicts the late 90s/early 2000s Japanese mix and match hip hop style combined with a Japanese urban aesthetic and huge dash of dead sea salt.
It's more or less the opposite of what your pictures are suggesting. I also like really cute squids as well, especially in your second picture, so Nintendo's direction is to more or less a compromise and have a little of both, resulting in something that will satisfy a broader audience, but will ultimately please nobody.
As an aside, I wish my squid could have a side ponytail hairstyle like the orange one in your second picture.

I'd argue that the design is not contemporary because it definitely doesn't mimic current trends, but is instead, a mockery of a culture passed. Splatoon's design is very much in the same vein as Jet Set Radio. It's a Japanese-style urban environment in a futuristic setting that apes Japanese hip hop culture. Both games take this approach in a strange half sincere and half ironic sort of way. The tryhard edgy feel compared to the cutesy, fat faced squid children is a deliberate juxtaposition. See in pic related where the summary screen shows all of the squids with the same serious game face expression, but all of them have a mishmash of head and facial gear on. This was a deliberate design choice. The game even has some flavor text scattered around about the ridiculousness of the squids trying to stand out. Turf War was an honest-to-goodness war in the past, and now it's a game for short term bragging rights.

The inkling girl character is really iconic these days. The orange tentacle hair and the totally not Super Soaker 50 really stand out. Splatoon is huge right now. The Japanese love it and can't get enough of it. I don't know if the series will have a lasting appeal for console generations to come, but the series really does stand out as its own thing right now. You post a picture of an inkling or any in-game screenshot of the game, and most anyone who plays video games will know right away that it's Splatoon.

You'll do fine, despite the weapon type being underused. Tri-slosher is still great. All of its nerfs were reversed except for range, so it's still very powerful, but many people haven't noticed it. I finished farming all the Hero campaign weapons. The real challenge was to get the Splatling run of The Experimentorium (lvl 19) past the row of floating hooks you gotta shoot as you fall, since you gotta rev up the gun in midair when it does so slower than normal (already). If you see someone with the Hero Splatling Replica online, you already know you are dealing with a strong-willed autist.
Other than that, I dunno, this Salmon run is chill, both the short ranged dualies and the squiffer are good for taking down a drizzler in one volley (with the dualies you gotta do it post roll, with the drizzler you just gotta shoot as soon as it charges, the timing's tight). Main problem is Griller round with whoever hold either of these on the run, because the dps of either tri-slosher and sloshing machine isn't the best bet.

Run speed up, swim speed up, and ink saver sub are pretty safe bets. Ink saver main isn't too important for dualies or splattershot(I main splattershot), but is useful for hungrier weapons. If you rely on your specials, special charge up and special power up are nice. These are all pretty safe for a newcomer.
Near worthless tier consist of special saver, quick respawn, cold blooded, opening gambit, last ditch effort, haunt, stealth jump, tenacity, and respawn punisher.
Situational tier consists of ninja squid, comeback, object shredder, drop roller, quick super jump, and bomb defense.

Honestly I'm not sure if it's just that the damn weapon is that broken, or if I'm actually playing a weapon that fits my playstyle more.
I say that because, while I mained the Dualie Squelchers for a while, back in 1 I mained mostly close range stuff. Like the Splattershot and Neo Splash-O-Matic, and would play pretty aggressively, with focus more on continually moving, and shooting.

Yeah, so I usually use Photoshop in RGB mode to draw my pictures. Then, I save them as a 24-bit bitmap in Photoshop, open them in MS Paint and then save them as a monochrome bitmap in MS Paint Photoshop does some strange things when recalculating higher color modes into monochrome, even if you are truly only using black and white. When using fonts, I use none for the blending mode, as using anything else will add shades of gray to your font, which will be lost when uploading anyway, which will cause that cruft you were talking about, yeah. It's basically recalculating color data that you didn't want in the first place. Fonts are going to look jaggy. Everything does. There's not much you can do with two colors and a 320x120 work space, but I assure you, that it will look fine in game, or simply nobody will be as autistic as you when it comes to your drawings. They're a 320x120 element on a 1080p screen, so it's going to look fine in game. When posted on social media, they get blown up, I think, threefold. Pics related are my last two drawings, how they look in Photoshop, and how they're posted on social media.

Opening Gambit is gunna get nerfed because Kills and Assists extend its abilites by 7.5 seconds if you can keep getting kills and assists its basically free movement speed for a full 5 minutes

No yeah, finally having the Neo Splash in my grubby mitts again, and this kind of weapon is what I'm best with. Something that necessitates a lot of aggression, and continually moving. And it's even better than in 1, since now the suction bomb launcher means I can help my team either repel the enemy, or outright push, given how the SBL basically locks down an area.
That, combined with the fact that I can actually fucking aim again, has led me to be doing a lot better these past few matches. I did ultimately rank down, but I was two losses away from doing so when I started, and I won more than I lost.
Seriously, I love the Neo Splash. The focused spray of fire, the high mobility thanks to burst bombs, the special, it's so fucking good.The only real downside is that because it's only good if you aim, there's never going to be those lucky moments where the weapon's RNG spread will help compensate.

if you're running roller you're probably spending more time out of ink than in (because you have to be holding down roll to actually put down ink with volume). You might do alright with run speed up to bump your speed when you have the roller down on the ground, but swim speed won't serve you very well. Just found out about a minor update to the Single-Player; Callie hangs out with Marie at the starting area after you beat the final level, and their dialogue focuses on your multiplayer shenanigans.
Callie uses "Weapon Fortune-Telling" to determine your lucky weapon for the day, and quizzes Marie about other musicians and popular music.
Marie stalks all of your multiplayer matches, tracks some (bizarre) statistics with autistic detail, then shames you with them; I was told which stage I keep falling off of, how much of my previous match was spent hiding in ink, and how many times I've died without activating a full Special meter.

I'm getting tired of it. I've been meaning to do solo ranked for quite some time, since I think I'm good enough to at least be S+ now, so I decided to jump on immediately after waking up and just outright do it. I played Clam Blitz earlier this week, and ranked up a few times. Every other day I've been available to play, it's been Clam Blitz again and again. The rotation kills my desire to play ranked because it's always giving my Clam Blitz. We get it, Splatoon. You smoke weed.

I tried it for the first time yesterday (took a long break, haven't played any mode besides Splatfests for six months), and went from C- to A in the space of two hours.
Gameplay revolves around getting the super-clam-thing (by collecting ten normal clams, picking up a dead team-mate's one before it de-spawns, or the 'free' one spawned after a successful defence), then throwing it accurately at an orb placed deep into enemy territory. Normal clams spawn in set places around the map, can be thrown at any time with [L] or [A], and you can see them through walls / on the map if your team's ink is underneath them.
Breaking the enemy's orb knocks 20 points off the target of 100 (or less, if a penalty is active), turns it into an open net, makes your team's orb invulnerable, and starts a countdown timer.
While a net is 'open', everyone on your team can throw clams at it to extend the timer and chip away at the target score; basically, you want to break the orb while clam-carrying teammates are nearby, and they can contribute even if they only have normal clams.
It seems to require more team co-ordination than the other modes, which is bound to cause problems at higher ranks if you only play with randos.

I'll admit I'm bad at the game in a lot of ways, but there's a huge gulf of my performance between Clam Blitz, and every other mode (pic related).
Beyond the fact that I need to git gud at it, the mode is just inherently not fun at all. With every other mode, there's a clear focus to the objectives, so that even if your team isn't all that on point, you can still take initiative and rally them around you, by sheer "playing the game better than them."
But Clam Blitz is a fuckin' mess. One that favors brush + ninja squid styled sets, sneaking into the other base, etc. It's also the only mode where you can stack objectives, and score huge via super jumping bullshit. Like doing so with armor, and throwing as soon as you land.
And the worst part is this could very easily be fixed, to an extent.

You're tasked with collecting, and delivering them to a specific point on the opposing team's turf.
And I'm sure you can already see the problems with that, in a game that lacks communication tools.
Like, I can (and inevitably will) get good at this mode, start winning a lot, and make it up to S+, but jesus fuck the base mode is just not fun.

Clam Blitz appears to be the end-product of what may have started as a competitive Salmon Run VS mode.
Instead of collecting eggs from bosses and returning them to your own basket (and/or stealing eggs from the other team through a variety of potential methods) you collect scattered clams (no bosses, or any creeps at all) and turn them in to the opponents' basket.
I actually wanted a VS mode for Salmon Run, although it would probably be an imbalanced mess. This is probably the closest thing to a "fair" 2-team Salmon Run.
