In this thread anons recommend ONE game for their fellows.
No lists, motherfuckers.
Just pick one and try to keep nostalgia out of it. Doesn't have to be your favorite, just a fun one that you think others might have missed. Tell us why it's worth a try.
I recommend Infinifactory, a nice Zachtronics puzzle game where you make production lines in a cube-based environment.

If you haven't at least dipped into Phantasy Star's spinoffs like Universe and Online, try some of the mainline games. My overall recommendation has to be 4, as it has the best visuals and best art direction for the time. All the others can be skipped for one reason or another. The biggest highlight of it all is the complex macro system that, while I never touched, know that it'll improve the grind. It even lets you play with an extremely powerful character early on, showing some of the major strengths of skill type characters.

Survivalist. It's a mixture between RPG and RTS. You scavenge the map for food, weapons, ammunition, and resources to build your own base. You can also recruit just about every NPC and put them to work either farming, guarding, or looting.

Dungeon Souls
This little game has kept me entertained for many hours. To boil it down, you choose a hero to play as and you're thrown into The Dungeon with little explanation. There is a tutorial but it's entirely optional, and the controls are easy enough to figure out. While you're in the dungeon, you're fighting off all different kinds of enemies, a lot of which have their own gimmicks (such as slimes being poisonous to the touch, ice enemies freezing you, etc.), and searching for these big runes scattered throughout the various rooms. Once you activate all the runes the Redeemer will come for you, so you must hurry to the portal to the next floor. There are plenty of bosses and secret areas, and a shitload of items to find. Once you finally die or destroy The Dungeon if you figure out how you'll find yourself back in the main menu with any coins and experience you collected still in your possession. With these you can upgrade your passives, which are stats that carry across all the heroes, and also fool around with the crafting, assuming you find any recipes.
Each of the heroes has their own gimmick, the Thief is very fast and has a higher critical rate, the Warrior can attack large areas and destroy projectiles, the Cleric can self heal, etc. Some heroes have to be unlocked before you can choose them though. The crafting isn't very robust, but it is pretty rewarding. At first you'll find recipes to craft weapons that are more or less sidegrades to the standard ones. Materials aren't a pain in the ass to find either.
TL;DR: it's a roguelike through and through. Play it.

I can't really think of anything, Arx Fatalis is pretty good, I rarely hear discussion on it and there are few reviews and no good reviews for it anywhere, it's a good game but the thing it about I love the most is the way you interact with the world naturally, you can buy beer from the tavern but to do so you have to select your coin purse and then select the barmaid and then she will make a beer appear on the counter, It's very sad that this sort of gameplay never took off but heavily menu based ones did, I'd love to be able to buy stuff from stores by interacting with the physical goods in the store and then paying.
RIP Arkane.

Mad Max. An underappreciated gem of an open world car combat game. The on foot combat is "okay" but the driving and feeling of ramming guys into the environment is second to none. It's very grindy, but has a lot of open world "content" to chew on. It came out the exact same day as MGSV and was overlooked. I feel the "CARPG" side of the game is sadly undersppeciated. This game isn't about Max or the story. The main character is the car you build along the journey piece by piece. It's really good if you're looking for a fucking huge 80 hour game to grind through.

It still has a small and dedicated following but I think there are a lot of people out there who would love it if they gave it a shot.

Dismantling other vehicles piece by piece with the harpoon then shooting the exposed driver never really got old to me. It's the one open world chorefest I ever bothered to finish, and it really offers something different in that niche of games. The Death Races are also fun as fuck. Best 5 dollars I ever spent on a game I was sure I would get bored of in 3-4 hours. I recommend it only for its overlooked status, not because it's some masterpiece.

Also, I recommend Panzer Corps. If anyone has played any of the Panzer General games in the past, this is the modern spiritual sequel. Take Germany from the Polish campaign to invading the continental US (if you don't fuck up along the way) and ensure a better future for the human race.
Also, don't be fooled by the fact the game came out in the 2010s, it's difficult as fuck, especially if you play on the higher difficulties and want to create an experienced and effective fighting force. It's not unheard of to have to give up on a 20 hour campaign because you fucked yourself over with your army composition.
The game is made up of a few campaigns. There's the main campaign that comes with the base game, and is relatively short (for example, Poland is made up of only one map), and then there's the Grand Campaign that is very long, very hard, and has scenarios that try to mix things up so it's not always about taking objectives as fast as possible. There's also campaigns for the Americans and the Soviets, but the main focus is on Germany.

Haven And Hearth.
It's a game by a couple of Swedes. You're dropped off in the middle of the Scandinavian wilderness with no clothes and no food. Your first mission is to acquire a tool, which means wandering over to a tree to get a branch and finding yourself a rock. With these two things, you can make a stone axe. This axe will accompany you almost as long as you live, and will be your second-best friend, if only because being miserable will be your first-best. From here, you'll forage and occasionally run from boars, bears, and bats until you get enough of a handle on your situation to worry about where you're going to live. Shelter will be essential, mostly because goods will decay if they're left on the ground, and that includes the storage bins you'll make. Inside a building, like a or a lean-to, they'll last much longer.
You might make friends along the way. More commonly, you'll make acquaintances that you occasionally steal from because they've been playing a bit longer than you, and have stuff stolen from your camp while you're offline. If you do accomplish the feat of making a friend, however, you might find yourself wearing real clothes instead of itchy-ass shorts made out of stinging nettles and string.
It's a weirdly simple time sink of a game.
I also stole the client for the 3D remake a few months before they actually revealed it. It was purely accidental. I knew a few Russians who could make better use of it, and sent it to them. They ended up using it for research into what became the final product, and came up with the basis for a lot of the custom clients that people use today. Jorb and Loftar, the devs, were fucking furious.

Dead Cells, a really addicting roguelitevania whatever, you die you start over, but when reaching the end of a level you can spend acquired cells towards upgrades and unlocking new items/weapons. Sounds like a basic romp, but the gameplay is superb, it feels like 3D Ninja Gaiden in 2D form, it's slick, it's fast as fuck, it's a split between getting physical with two attacks or using two trap items that deal area damage/turrets. By killing elite enemies in certain rooms, you unlock the metroidvania abilities like wallclimbing, ground smash etc. that open up new areas to explore, usually much more difficult than the normal route. Been playing for about 70 hours and still have only beat two bosses in a row, it has the same issue as Risk of Rain that some runs just seem to be doomed at the midway part. But the fast, brutal and fun gameplay really makes it stand out. Swings have weight and pump, the sound design is excellent.
I knew nothing going in and was hooked pretty soon. It's EA so I pirated it, but if the end product turns out even better I might even give the devs some coin since they're poor baguettefags.

The Thing
A solid recommendation to anyone who has not played this. Team management, body horror, paranoia, Resident Evil/Parasite Eve mechanics, and good solid game that runs on anyThing. You need to bloodtest your allies for infection, to succeed, and monsters are deadly and horrifying.
I know this was one game only, but picked up Cold Fear on PE thread, and it's great, if you like to get really seasick. One of the main mechanics is violently swaying ship. They did that a bit too well, I have never gotten virtual seasickness before.

From The Depths. It's about a multi-faction war over an ocean world… except that you build all your units. You can build damn near any vehicle you can think of: airships, sail boats, submarines, jet fighters, spacecraft, etc. all the way to massive battleships with laser missile defence systems, cannons that shoot shells the size of cars, railguns, torpedos, energy shields, autonomous repair systems, etc.. And you don't just build the exterior, you also build the weapons, sensors, engines, and other items yourself, allowing you incredible control over your systems. You also can program the vehicle AIs individually with both the in-game systems and/or actual LUA scripts.
If you've been looking for a game that's sort of like Carrier Command but with several helpings of autism, this is your jam. One more thing: it's multiplayer :)

You play as one of two brothers trying to protect your sister from 19th century Canadian monsters being led by the devil himself
all the while doing some lumberjacking on the side to earn money for traps/ammo/liquor/better axes
It also has a fear mechanic that will keep things away from you until they get the courage to attack which you can increase by roaring, shooting a wolf in the face, using fire ect
Music is amazing if you go for folk music, graphics are a little rough though.
The game play focus is more on making a good plan for each night to deal rather than just going out and hacking at everything with an axe though that will be occasionally required
The best part is that it is free as in freedom on both gog and steam so no reason to not try it out at least

Capcom originally released this game with a garbage translation, dumbing down or changing the dialogue and parts of the story. However, the game how it was intended in fantastic. Great stories, great characters, great writing, great bosses, great pacing, etc. It's easily one of my favorites and can compete with the best of SNES RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4 & 6, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, you get the point. Sadly the series didn't last, although it got as far as 5 or 6 if you count mobile shit it had around 4 good games with the first one of them being average or decent.

fist of the north star: ken's rage 2 has like 40 playable characters and every single one uses exclusively their fists. wii u, xbox 360 and ps3. not a very good title unless you're a big fan of the original source material though. (i am and i suck this game's cock)
the super spy for neo geo is a first person game with punches and kicks. really unique underrated title.
can't really think of much else. it's ridiculous how rare it is.

I'll shill this again since the cake yid deleted my posts in the roguelike thread for some reason. It's a roguewhatever with real-time top-down combat. Visuals are vector based and use parallax on layered vectors to give the illusion of 3D on walls and objects. The combat system is surprisingly robust, you have two hands, which can hold weapons, shields, throwing weapons, bows, etc. Swinging/lunging with a melee weapon will put it on cooldown, as will absorbing a certain amount of damage with a shield that is determined by the shield type and any enchantments/parrying bonuses. Enemies play by the same rules, generally you don't want to just trade hits, and just swinging at an enemy who has their weapon ready is likely to result in this. So you'll generally want to put their weapon on cooldown by baiting them into hitting your shield (or the inverse would be hitting them with a throwing weapon to put their shield on cooldown) in order to get hits in without having to trade. Ranged/magic weapons are powerful but most arrows fired are consumed and magic weapons require recharging with consumables. Thrown daggers/axes are not consumed but have to be retrieved, and enemies can pick them up and throw them back at you. Slight weakness of the combat system is enemies are somewhat easy to cheese at doorways as they seem to struggle at simultaneously trying to fight you and approach through a doorway, but if you're complacent you'll still get your teeth kicked in, and you often won't have a convenient doorway.
Beyond that it adheres fairly faithfully to the standard roguelike formula, with potions and scrolls that need to be identified and can have positive or negative effects, you also have cursed/blessed items and the like. It take some inspiration from Brogue in that there is no XP/level up system. The player gets stronger by consuming Strength and Life potions, which improve physical strength and HP respectively, and acquiring and upgrading their gear with enchantment scrolls or sigils. Sigils give +1 to an item like enchantment scrolls but also bestow a magic bonus to the weapon, same types can stack for additional bonuses and certain types can combine e.g. Life+Death = Weapon of Vampirism.
The dev is still updating the game even though it hasn't sold too well, providing various improvements as well as 2 free DLCs with different game-modes, with an additional one planned. So you should consider buying the game if you enjoy it, it is on Steam but doesn't use Steam as DRM, I've moved it over to my Linux PC and am running it in WINE quite comfortably.

As for myself, since the 2nd game is coming out soonish, I guess I'll recommend La-Mulana for anyone that hasn't tried it yet.
It's a metroidvania game with puzzles and hints that has you keeping notes if you want to have any chance of beating it. There's a few puzzles that are absolute bullshit but the vast majority of the game is extremely satisfying if you want to really be challenged by a massive dungeon.

Strain Tactics
A top down tactics game where you control an (((UN)))2 elite team against a zombie-like alien infection. You can manually manage 5 troops, secure areas and land your units one by one, or let them fight automatically while you clear open areas with your helicopter's weapons. You can also go RTWP like in doorkickers or full real time. Pretty trial-and-error. But watch out for the autosave after leaving some areas if you fuck up and lose too many money.

my recommendation. for comfy only. its not a minecraft clone, its actually alot like the original dark cloud for ps2 because its a quest based RPG that allows for base building and autism, but isnt a requirement, and is about appeasing the towns inhabitants. the game has 4 unique levels with items/aesthetics/environments/enemies unique to each of the 4 worlds, 4 different bosses, and the levels are not procedurally generated so there is some planned cohesion. at the end, depending on how quickly you beat it and if you completed certain sidequests and challenges, you'd unlock more things in a 5th level thats basically a "free" mode that connects to alternate versions of each of the 4 levels. its extremely comfy.

Post-apocalyptic, merciless, open world, rpg, rts, city and/or base builder, squad based, crafting, survival, with a powerful atmosphere I haven't felt in any other game. Has been in development by a dedicated team for years, and with a devoted cult following. Now very close to completion. Game isn't for everyone, you have to really enjoy the idea that you're a nobody in a post apocalyptic scenario with a world to explore.
