I'm at the end of a NG+ run atm. Experiencing a pained posterior for failing to Platinum the game because of one stupid request that's triggered differently from every other else in a area nobody revisits. Also because I leveled up to fuse Satanael, the last dungeon was a tutorial tier joke with Ryuji's insta-kill skipping every single fight but the mandatory ones. I had the foresight to save just before Shido so I can do it right.
Did something I never tried before and kept a Persona through most of the game - Nekomata. She got to feast on much higher level Personas on a borderline daily basis and is currently at Lv63 (from Lv17).

The combat can be brutal sometimes. If you're not careful and die in a palace, you HAVE TO reset to last time you entered a safe room, my biggest loss was probably like 30 min of progression.
The pacing is bad, it gets extremely tedious towards the end.
It does take a while to get going in terms of story and gameplay mechanics. There's a lot to swallow in the start with the introduction of characters, abilities, Personas, time management sub systems etc.
If you are looking for amazing/groundbreaking gameplay, then P5 won't be for you I'm afraid. It's somewhat enjoyable, but nothing remarkable. I think the biggest reason to play is the characters (and romance options). The story is decent, but I understand why many people didn't like it in various aspects. I liked the story because it wasn't too convoluted in my opinion, I didn't have too much trouble with characters, their names (which I usually tend to forget) and the events that take/took place. Persona 5 is pretty much a VN in disguise to be honest, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I'm not entirely sure what you consider the "core concept" of P5, but don't go into it for the battles.

I also ended up being with Hifumi when I played through the game. At first it was due to the very chart in the OP and I rolled her prior to playing the game, but I ended up legitimately liking her character. She gives you some of the best confidant unlocks, and she also get me interested in learning chess and strategy/tactics games. I still suck at chess, but I'm actually enjoying RTS and RTT games more than I thought I would (never played them that often before).
Sucks that she isn't a playable character, but the way they re-worked her as a confidant was a good way to keep her in. Also works in a way as being a possible girlfriend for the MC that isn't apart of the phantom thieves (even after learning his secret at rank 10) and is around his age, which allows him to enjoy life outside of his work.

The game will keep you on a leash for about 3h and then put it back on for several short intervals but the core formula is pretty good, all the new stuff it brings makes it pretty fun like how the S-Links now give you abilities/perks, some commodities like quick travel and being able to see Confidante events on the map etc. Plus, if you got a tism bone, you'll love the Fusion system where you make your own Pokemon.
Overall, it's one of those things where the experience is greater than the sum of its parts. It's all very slick looking, OST is super comfy and if you can deal with the frustration of the game putting you on time out every now and then (admittedly the reason that kept putting back my NG+ run), it's a good game.

I'd say the reason for this is twofold and both are bullshit.
1 - the game has the habit of randomly spawning enemies right on top of you and you get ambushed out of nowhere
2 - RNGesus is clearly on the AI's side, you see them score Crit after Crit, multi-hitters hit for everything and they get ailments way too frequently to the point of one enemy getting the entire party so you might as well put down the pad.

Doesn't help that aside from crits and weaknesses there are also abilities which are literally described as an insta-kill if you get lucky. Just happens in very cluttered areas, after you beat one enemy, the others respawn and sometimes it's right in front of you. The castle is the best example because it has a couple of areas with shadows almost huddled together like the section leading to the roof. You beat one, the other spawns right next to you and next thing you know, you're getting tiger fucked by a pack of Beriths or a bunch of succubi Marin Karin three quarters of your party.

Actually that section of castle is a poor example. Because that is the one and only place in the entire game where they had an "ambush" tile that looks normal, but triggers an ambush battle when walked on and has a red aura in theif vision. I distinctly remember this because I saw it in thief vision and figured I'd investigate it and fucking died. After that I keep a vigilant eye for them, but they where never used again.
The only other time I have encountered an enemy spawning on me was when I went back for some locked chests after sending the calling card. Since it seems enemies don't respawn until leaving the room under normal conditions and at least once immediately on high alert.

OP back again. Just writing some of my experiences so if you are not interested you can skip my posting entirely. It will be mostly about Hifumi so I hope you can fogive me my faggotry.
Played yesterday some more and currently I am just at the beginning of futaba's palace. On NG+ you get insanely fast in ranking up your confidants. I am on rank 8 already with Ryuji, Ann and Takemi and rank 6 with Kawakami. I just remembered how much time I wasted on my first run with just going to the burger joint and the diner. Or spending evenings with video games because I needed rank ups to advance my confidants. I am glad this crap is not necessary now.
Then some things I noticed about Hifumi. She is indeed a chunni, just like this other anon suggested a year ago. Back then I did not understand him but today I do and I immediately remembered his postings when I started ranking her up on NG+.
Some of her quotes to explain why he is right:

and those are only the ones I saw until now (Rank 4)
Then for rank 4 I felt like the cutscene was different last time. I remember beeing with Hifumi in the books store part of town when we suddenly met Makoto and then the situation got quite weird. At that time I had more confidant progress with Makoto (on my last playthrough) so I felt bad for Makoto thinking of MC badly because he is now hanging out with another girl. It is really interesting how many forks and alternate cutscenes you will have in this game. I wonder how many playthroughs you would need to see everything.
Then I remembered how we used to have talks what improvements the Crimson version should have. Apart from the obvious (less cat nagging, reading book while doing laundry, getting rid of flashbacks) I remember anons posting how Hifumi's mother should have her own palace and how a samurai war general look would suit Hifumi well in the metaverse. Today I just found a video on youtube where a guy actually created a theme song for Hifumi and designed her to actually look like a samurai war general with one of those big kabuto helmets:

After playing Innocent Sin I have to wonder, why does everyone recommend the PSP of Persona 2: IS over the original release? The remixed OST may be better outside of the weaker bass and stereo mixing, the new opening is superb, the translation is more consistent, but everything else is worse about the remake and has an overall worse experience. Combat is slower, the presentation is inferior, and the damage values are pitiful. Granted, it's still not difficult, and it's easy to over level if you go out of your way to grind, but a strategy is still advisable.
To give you an example of the change in damage values.

Just got to the deadline of Futaba. Half of my confidtants are already max rank, many are 7 or 8 and the rest is between 2 and 4. I will now post some more experiences I had while playing:
I had an interesting scene with ann on summer vacation. She invited me to accompany her and shiho to school. Shiho wanted to be on the roof one last time before she moved away. I never saw this scene on my first playthrough and I wonder how many scenes I have missed already.

Started NG++ (gonna try and Platinum before I get Yakuza 6) and now a fresh remembrance of the whole thing, the game does slowly but surely drop the ball right after the museum. The Palace masters aren't as involved and the Palaces themselves drop that concept of getting trippier the more you progress. The Castle is a perfect example for both - you run into Kamoshida about 4 times before the actual fight and the Castle gets really weird in the last floors, one of my favorite details is the line of black, red-eyed Kamoshida busts that follow your every more. Likely won't happen but would be nice if P5C addressed this.
Also odd that MC has a Shuujin uniform before enrolling but I guess that was settled before and Rusty signing the papers was just a formality. And speaking of that day and P5C, when Rusty asks what we think of the school, I want a "Dude, my teacher is hot!" option.
Also just really noticed that MC's criminal record gets leaked on the very next day, the first school day. How the fuck Kamoshida and Mishima got to that so quickly is kinda odd. I also wish we had the option to intimidate those fuckers talkin' shit.
Side note, if Confidantes could hear Morgana, you could run the risk of getting counter-cucked by the cat. Kawakami just wants to sleep and Morgana just wants people to sleep, she'd be like "He listens to my needs!" then you'd go revenge fuck Anne and you'd get this bizarre 3 person and a cat NTR criss cross scenario.

this is actually true. I only got most of my confidants to rank 8 or 9 on my first run. I had ohya and chihaya on 9 and ann on 8. THank you
