I stand by that CSS pre-OB update was peak CS. The more randomized spray patterns didn't matter. Players could collide with each other, many engines enabled a push options for physics props, players could use physics props to obscure parts of the map from other players, players could stand on other players and were jump+crouch height so it was an encouraged element to stop blocking and also gave the option for odd and interesting strategies. The physics had few limits which allowed people to hit insane speeds with good bunny hops.
This all led to CS 1.6's wild game modes to be taken into vastly improved directions. x-men powers, rpg, warcraft, the glorious gun game turbo, etc.
CSGO has what? People memorizing weapon spray patterns that have been enshrined since 1999? They stopped being interesting almost 20 years ago. Memorizing map layouts that haven't changed in 18 years? Stopped being interesting 17 years ago. It's not a great test of raw skill, for a slew of reasons, technical and otherwise, and it's just not a very interesting game to attract people like the pubmasters or phoon.
