They've fucked up a formerly fairly safe money making franchise and reduce it to something worse than bad, it's just boring. What Star Trek really is is some interesting characters and settings constructed per series, some relatively generic sci-fi (and general drama) scenarios are written for any characters, and the characters are injected into the story, and it is refined into something that makes sense in the setting and for the characters. Saying "it's mostly dialog and plot" is pretty accurate to what is in its initial form basically a televised radio serial.

If DC/Warner can go and rip dialogue straight from certain Mark Waid written Superman comics to use for Man of Steel (and not pay or even inform him until he watched it in the theater) then Disney should be able to do whatever they want with EU stuff. They got the inspiration for Kylo Ren crossguard lightsaber from the EU, Thrawn imade it in to Rebels, they didn't have to pay anyone for that did they?
