Also, the perk system in Skyrim had so much fucking potential. There's a mod out there that actually does it the right way instead of "BLOCK PERK: 20% more blocking. Uh… 5 levels. Max 100% damage blocked. Fuck."

The mod makes it so perks actually do something interesting, like you can level archery so that you can use 'ethereal arrows' which drain your magic instead of needing actual arrows, and their damage is based on a combination of your archery skill and your conjuration skills.

This is the big problem with TES games these days, honestly. They blow their budget on shit like expensive voice actors instead of playing to the genre's strengths with good writers.

Dawnguard and Dragonborn (especially Dragonborn) were both miles better than main Skyrim. Bethesda clearly has the ability to make good content, it's just that they keep fucking up on main games squandering their budget on shit that detracts from the game. Here are a few "gatchas" you'll want to avoid.

Move your steam folder outside of your program files folder. You don't have to reinstall Steam to do this. You can just cut and paste and it will work. It's easier to do this before you start modding.

Windows permissions are a huge headache. If LOOT, Bodyslide, F4SE, and FNIS aren't working the first thing you should try is running things as administrator (or removing that requirement)

Be sure to set up your .ini's for modding. Check and double check the required lines are there.

Use enb even if you don't want to modify your graphics. It's more stable. There is a vanilla version available.
