The Xbox vs Dualshock layout argument could be put to rest entirely if somebody would just fucking make a modular gamepad that has thumbstick/d-pad attachments for both sections.
The only issue this could possibly run into is the lack of precision analog directional control for fighting games, but if you play fighting games you're already using a stick anyway.
Why has nobody made this yet?
59320e No.13865476
Because it would be expensive and all games nowadays are made for same buttons:
>4 triggers.
>4 buttons
>d-pad
>2 joysticks
>3 menu
By making it modular you would just raise the price and lose lot of rep as it would most likely break more easily. Look at switch it already have gotten of pads they are easy to destroy because people mistook right and left one.

It is very configurable especially with Steam where you can actually configure it to work like the Steam Controller's touchpads by emulating it as a trackball. You can even configure a segmented trackpad with different sensibility for faster cursor movement in one half and precise aim in the other. It isn't perfect, because the trackpad is a tad small, but it works well enough for it to be a considerable feature and it is also adds 2 extra functionality buttons on the gamepad as the trackpad is a giant button and you can configure this button to input different commands conditional on what segment of the trackpad your finger is when you press it. I configured those buttons to be Alt+Tab on one side and the other is sometimes Quicksave or other frequently used shortcut depending on the game. Alt-tabbing to a browser and using the controller as mouse to consult a game wiki or lurk /v/ is very comfy.

The button/stick positioning isn't much of an issue. I prefer the Xbox's layout, but it's not a big deal. What kills me on the Xbox's controller is the damned face buttons are far too clicky and have a more pronounced convex shape to them which makes them a pain in the ass to press in rapid succession or for long periods. The DS4's buttons are flat and feel like they have far less resistance to being pressed - which is especially nice for using the controller on the PC as a emulation controller since a lot of older games had button spam sections.

Back when I worked at gamestop, someone actually traded in a 3rd party controller that you could customize. Both joysticks, the d-pad, and the face buttons could be moved around between four different sockets. I haven't seen one since, but I know it existed and it sucked.
7c3d1d No.13874961
Because I'm autistic, I took pictures of myself holding all the controllers I have. The pictures were taken after playing a game for a short time, with my thumb on the analog stick (if applicable).
>DS3
It is for asian baby hands, but that only makes it uncomfortable when using the d-pad. Holding onto it is still fairly comfortable, but it makes my fingers curl more than any other controller. The spacing of the analog sticks makes it so my thumb only bends slightly in the neutral position. Since the sticks don't require much resistance, it's easy to get cramped while playing for long periods.
>Hori Fighting Commander 4
No analog, no problems. The FC4 has a handle on the left side that's missing on the right, which makes every use of the d-pad feel comfortable. I don't care about the handle on the right, because it only gets in the way (especially when using all 6 buttons). Perfect for fighting games and anything 2D. Definitely my most comfortable controller, I'm not sure why Hori moved away from this design in newer models
>Dreamcast
Almost perfect. It's tall enough to fit the length of my hand, and my thumb goes straight up to meet the stick. The d-pad is in a terrible position, because it's not only lower, but deeper. You can shift your palm to make it work, but it's not ideal for going back and forth. The face buttons are spaced out, too, which feels more natural. The VMU housing keeps me from gripping the controller all the way, along with the excess plastic surrounding the oddly placed start button. It's almost impossible to hold with one hand, but you shouldn't be using one hand in Soul Calibur or Crazy Taxi anyways.
>Vita
Easily the worst. This is truly made for chink hands, and there is no good way to use the sticks. The face buttons are tiny and clumped together, too, so it's just a terrible experience. Maybe it's just my vita, but the shoulder buttons only trigger if you press on the furthest inside part of the button. As in, no pressing it from the sides, you must reach all the way in. The dents on the back are supposed to hold your fingers, which is a good idea except they're way too shallow, and only good for the tips of your fingers. The only way to use the Vita is by balancing it on the last three fingers of your hands, with your palms hovering somewhere above the screen. d-pad and buttons are clicky but way too small for anything other than the turn-based JRPGs that are the Vita's library. Good thing there's a homebrew application for pairing a DS3 to it
>2DS
It's a Dreamcast controller but flat. Extremely comfortable, though the corners can hurt your palms after 3 or 4 hours. The d-pad positioning problem isn't fixed from the DC, but it's easier to access since the analog stick is flat. Shoulder buttons are clicky and can be pressed from any angle, which makes pressing them from the side easy. It's really easy to hold one-handed, since you can spread out your fingers all the way across the device if you want. My only nag is the face buttons and d-pad aren't very good, and the face buttons are really close together. It's worse than the Vita's buttons, but they're easier to press at the same time.
